TELECOMMUNICATIONS -- PART 2
What we found on line:
America People Link is a fairly new
service, which is geared mostly to
On-line chatting, in groups, or in
private. This is called the
Party-Line, and those on-line are
referred to as 'Plinkers'. To find
your computer friends, there is a user
directory, which can be searched by
state, city, name, interest, etc.
There are also Bulletin boards where
you can read and write notices.
There's even one user who leaves
poetry on the board.
Dow Jones News/Retrieval Service has
more to offer in terms of information.
At no extra charge you have Grolier's
Encyclopedia on-line with over 30,000
words in its vocabulary for convenient
and quick searches. There's also movie
reviews, CompuStore (fee required),
news, and the Wall Street Journal news
search. In looking for entries for
'falcon', it listed 39! However, as
we scrolled through these, we realized
that they were references to the TV
show, Falcon Crest! Just a warning:
be specific when you search!
PlayNet is a game playing and
on-line chatting system and much more!
Currently this system is for C64s
only, but other versions should be out
soon. You can play games with people
from all over the U.S. We also use
PlayNet ALL the time to send
electronic mail to many of our friends
and colleagues on the system. PlayNet
also allows you to upload and download
files.
Recommendations: For the whole
family, PlayNet and Dow Jones together
should fill all your telecommunication
needs. Playnet offers games and
E-mail, while Dow Jones offers
information services and E-mail.
