For those people using the C64 with a
television <and using the TV for
nothing else> you can improve your
picture very much if you will get a
cable with a phono to F type con-
nector. You then do away with the
game box and can hook up straight to
the TV.

Let me tell you of my experience with
the 1541 disk drive. My first one
lasted for two months then Zap!, A
problem with the power supply I think.
The discount store I bought it from
replaced it, no problem. At that time
the salesman said he had replaced
quite a few of them. At the time it
failed I was using a back-up program,
this is probably the hardest use for
the disk drive so any weakness would
first show up at that time. When I
started using the replacement drive I
placed small wood blocks under the
corners to allow a better circulation
of air within the disk drive, since
then it runs much cooler and no
troubles.

I stumbled across a game hint ser-
vice on Compuserve. If you get real
desperate, you can get some riddle-
like clues. For example, an Infidel
clue: "Beam me up Scotty!" Sometimes
the clues are tougher than the orig-
inal problem! They also have a Game
Special Interest Group (SIG) you can
join. Lots of help for the gamer.
Compuserve--- try Go-GSA to get to
the game hints area. Scorpia provides
some excellent gaming advice and ma-
terials. You can find this by trying
Go-GAM-310. Compuserve has a variety
of computer games you can access on
their service. Commodore has a manu-
facturer's newsletter on Compuserve
at Go CBM. All-in-all, Compuserve
has much to offer C-64 users. I think
you get good value for the investment
in a modem and the cost of the
service.

Here's a handy tip. I'm sure
Most of you with disk drives are
familiar with the "DOS Wedge". Well,
one disk I have had the loader for the
Wedge in the directory with a file
name of simply"!". This is very handy
when initially loading the Wedge as
you only have to type 'LOAD"!",8'.
The quote and Apostophe keys are next
to each other on the keyboard making
"!" easy to type. I have found it
very convienent to have the Wedge on
my most frequently used disks with its
loader named in that way. Whenever I
"light-off" my computer I always make
it a habit to 'LOAD"!",8"' the first
thing (with the proper disk in the
drive, of course.)

This is a very good tutorial on the
Commodore 64 disk drive, Dos Wedge, &
Data File handling techniques. Also
included are explanations of load,
save, new, copy, scratch, initialize,
validate, error channel, command chan-
nel, and rename in both the standard
and wedge syntax. It also explains
the verify, open, print#, input#,
get#, & status BAM commands. Lessons
include several small programs and a
large checkbook program. It has been
geared for the novice to the ex-
perienced programmer alike. I found
it to be most beneficial, and picked
up several tips and techniques on
dealing with the disk and sequential
file handling.
For your information there is also an
instruction vidio tape on basic pro-
gramming, using commands such as IF,
, DATA, LET, GOTO, INPUT, LEN, MID$,
LEFT$, RIGHT$, CHR, etc.
All in all if you have a VCR recorder
and feel that you still have things to
learn then I recommend these instruc-
tional tapes highly.

After about a year of struggling with
BASIC, I've discovered COMAL-- and I
think it's going to replace BASIC in
the next couple of years. It has the
"simplicity" of BASIC and the neat
form and structure of PASCAL. How
about taking a look at this? I think
you will find a LOT of interest!
From what I've been reading, many of
the Commodore users in Europe think
that BASIC is a disaster, and several
countries have adopted COMAL as the
official entry-level language.
A fellow by the name of Len Lindsay
appears to be the #1 COMAL authority
in the USA, and you can reach him at
COMAL TODAY, 5501 Groveland Terrace,
