  119.   It appears that the arithmetic coding option of the JPEG spec is
  120.   covered by patents owned by IBM, AT&T, and Mitsubishi.  Hence
  121.   arithmetic coding cannot legally be used without obtaining one or
  122.   more licenses.  For this reason, support for arithmetic coding has
  123.   been removed from the free JPEG software.  (Since arithmetic coding
  124.   provides only a marginal gain over the unpatented Huffman mode,
  125.   it is unlikely that very many implementations will support it.)

  127.   So far as we are aware, there are no patent restrictions on
  128.   the remaining code.

  130.   WARNING: Unisys has begun to enforce their patent on LZW
  131.   compression against GIF encoders and decoders.  You will need
  132.   a license from Unisys to use the included rdgif.c or wrgif.c files
  133.   in a commercial or shareware application.  At this time, Unisys is
  134.   not enforcing their patent against freeware, so distribution of
  135.   this package remains legal.  However, we intend to remove GIF
  136.   support from the IJG package as soon as a suitable replacement
  137.   format becomes reasonably popular.

  177.   The TWAIN Working Group grants customer ("Customer") the worldwide,
  178.   royalty-free, non-exclusive license to reproduce and distribute
  179.   the software and documentation of the TWAIN toolkit
  180.   ("TWAIN Toolkit"). The TWAIN Toolkit was designed to be used by
  181.   third parties to assist them in becoming compliant with the TWAIN
  182.   standard, but it has not been developed to the standards of
  183.   a commercial product. Consequently, the TWAIN toolkit is provided
