Browser 1.0.2 13 April 94 Browser was build using the same code as for Shoebox 1.0.2 b9 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox 1.0.2 b9 6 April 94 Bugs fixed: NoNum The SlideShow behavior is changed and here is the new logic: - the user starts the SlideShow (or hits a button from the SlideShow's Toolbar) and the CD is not mounted - the three-button-message-window pops up - the user hits Retry button(the CD is now mounted) and the keybord responds - the user hits Cancel button and the SlideShow is canceled - the user hits Try OtherDrives button and he can either locate the file or cancel the SlideShow All the time when the user hits the Cancel button the SlideShow is finished. The Toolbar actions are now properly handled(acording to the SlideShow new logic). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox 1.0.2 b8 4 April 94 Bugs fixed: NoNum Add Object when the Thumbnail size is set to 192x128 for complicated DOS images(TIFF,BMP etc.) To test this bug, download the file PROB1.TIF from the DOWNLOAD directory on the Epicad remote server. Produces a distorted thumbnail on b7, fixed in b8. NoNum Number of thumbnails on Status Bar was not properly updated when a catalog was opened. NoNum Now deleting dl$ files etc during install NoNum Version number corrected (Shoebox 1.0.2 only). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox 1.0.2 b7 28 March 94 Bugs fixed: 2971 PhotoCD ACCESS created TIF files are now correctly handled by Shoebox (we changed ACCUSOFT.DLL). Note that other applications may have a problem with these files, because the palette entries are Byte values in an Unsigned 16 bit field. For example, the file format utility packaged with Alice JPEG boards fails on these files. 2953 We have disabled any capability to delete field values except in Define Fields. This should cure the disappearing helper list problem. 2993 The install program has been brought up to the latest version, while still using version 1 of Install Shield. There is still no highlight on the default button in the directory selection screen. VERSION 1.0.3 WILL NEED 2 DISKS. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebx 1.0.2 b6 24 March 94 Bugs fixed: 2973 Jukebox Manager window overlapps Shoebox window (related to Load Image); Fixed. Fix was related to the suppression of repainting windows. 3017 The user can set (in SHOEBOX.INI file) a delay for the DDE between Shoebox and Jukebox Manager. If in SHOEBOX.INI is an entry JBMdelay=6000 in the [PhotoCD] section ,that means the timeout (6000 milliseconds) for the DDE transaction (read or write). The default value is 5000 milliseconds. 3018 The user can set (in SHOEBOX.INI file) the JBM window and service names. In SHOEBOX.INI in the [PhotoCD] section the user may optionally set JBMservice=JBM100 JBMname=KODAK Jukebox Manager (the above values are the defaults). 2993 Install fits on one disk. Changed back to version 1.31 of Install shield. This will make a previous bug reappear - there is no default focus in the first install dialog box. IN FUTURE VERSIONS WE WILL HAVE TO CHANGE TO A TWO DISK INSTALL. 3019 ! and @ in catalog filenames relaced with 1 and 2. OK Printing - we have tested extensively, and it appears OK. NoNum The Jukebox drive letter is reading now only one time(when Shoebox starts). Shoebox treats Jukebox Manager like a server. If Jukebox is installed the user must start Jukebox Manager before Shoebox (client-server philosophy). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox 1.0.2 b5 14 March 94 Like 1.0.2 b4 ,this is an interim version that implements the new "Load Image" logic. Bugs fixed: 1.Zoom In changes now the window dimension. 2.The Jukebox delay is removed (see 1.0.2b4 bug 1.b) from SHOEBOX.INI and from SHOEBOX code. New logic introduced for "Load Image". 3.a Bugs reported by Mike Pryor (When updating the "Caption" field on all of a selected series of images ,one of the user-defined fields will be updated on the last image of the sequence ) .b When modifying the caption, the user does not click the mouse in the caption area, any character that are typed will be placed into the user field that was selected before viewing the caption. 4.Related to the message: "Drive volume has changed -drive C: + PCD number" after Save As from a Contact Sheet 5.ACCUSOFT.DLL has changed to handle PICT image case (bug received from KODAK on Friday,11 1994-AppleLink) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox 1.0.2 b4 03 March 94 This is an interim version, intended mainly to test whether a delay on returning from the Jukebox fixes 2 reported bugs. Bugs fixed: 1.a. Freeze on return from Jukebox. Reported by Kevin Foley. b. Could Not Read From Drive E on return from Jukebox. Reported by Jim Reynolds. The user can set (in SHOEBOX.INI file) a delay for loading an image with Jukebox. If in SHOEBOX.INI is an entry JBMdelay=5 in the [PhotoCD] section ,SHOEBOX will attempt 5 seconds after JBM returns Done. The default value inside SHOEBOX is 10 seconds. NOTE: This is not the most appropriate way of solving this problem. Normally, the device software (in this case the JBM) should be sure that the device is ready before handing control back to the calling program. It would also be more robust in this case if the JBM ensured that the disk which has been loaded is, in fact, the one which was requested by the calling program. 2. Double menu on Contact Sheet. Reported by Kevin Foley. This is fixed by removing the BitBlt used in Contact Sheet redraws. This will also fix the old bug that Always On Top applications such as the Windows Clock or Freemem get printed onto the Contact Sheet Features: NOTE: these are still in progress to some extent, so it is not worth testing them exhaustively. 1. When an image is minimised, the image itself is used as an icon. 2. When the user relocates an image (1.0.2 b3 feature 1), the thumbnail is rebuilt. 3. Update catalog now rebuilds thumbnails for PCD images. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox and Browser 1.0.2 b3 21 Feb 94 New Features 1. See Kodak Change Control Form EK009, feature 1. If A PCD image (or a Catalog CD image) is not found when the user double-clicks on it, the product will attempt to find it on other PCD and network volumes, and if it is not found, will ask the user to find it, using a standard File Open dialog. The user navigates to an image and presses OK. If the new image is: A). A Photo CD image, it must be under the Images directory on a Photo CD, with INFO.PCD and OVERVIEW.PCD in the usual places. It must have a name of the type xxxnnnnn.PCD where nnnnn is a number. The volume and serial number of the lost image will be updated in the temporary database with those of the new disk. All other thumbnails pointing at the same PCD as the original "lost" image will now be pointed at the new drive, but their volume and serial numbers will not be changed. The user is not invited to update all thumbnails to the new volume. B). A Catalog CD image, it must also be in the "usual" place. However, since Cat CD images are usually Multipacks, the image number to which the user navigates is invalid. As a result, when the user presses OK in the File Open dialog, a dialog pops up asking the user to enter the required Catalog # (which is the terminology used to identify an image on a Catalog CD) in an edit box. The number entered is verified against the images actually available on the Catalog CD, and an error message is issued if this image is not available. Otherwise, the image is loaded and the temporary database is updated accordingly. The user is not invited to update all thumbnails to the new volume. C). A DOS image, on a DOS drive or on a CD (untested), the image will be displayed and the temporary database updated. The user is not invited to update all thumbnails to the new volume. In all the above cases, the system should work correctly across a Windows for Workgroup network (and presumably other peer-to-peer networks which support remote CD's transparently), and case 3 will also work across a Novell or other Windows supported server-based network. However, as mentioned in the readme for version 1.0.2 b2, EPICAD is not responsible for bugs or defects found in network operations. The Kodak Jukebox Manager is also supported by these new features, in that the automatic search includes JBM, and the new (redirected) image may be on the Jukebox. 2. See Kodak Change Control Form EK009, feature 2. If there is an entry systemFieldsAllowed=1 in the [PhotoCD] section of SHOEBOX.INI, the following File Fields may be changed by the user in INDEX. Volume Image ID (Update All will not work) Image Path (meaningless for PCD - update all will not work for PCD) File Type (only PCD or DOS will be accepted.) If systemFieldsAllowed is not present in SHOEBOX.INI, or if it is set to zero, the file fields will not appear in INDEX. Any other value of systemFieldsAllowed is taken as TRUE. 3. The above changes resulted in a new resource file and several new messages in 1.02, which will have to be translated in future International versions. Bugs Fixed. 2895. The previous solution to the problem of informing Shoebox of the position of the Help file was to put a string in SHOEBOX.INI at installation time, but this was unsatisfactory for Browser, and also for the Kamikaze user who copies Shoebox to another directory. Now we no longer write a string to SHOEBOX.INI during installation. Instead, both products look for the Help file in the directory they are running from. New Bug 1. If the drive letter of a Catalog stored on the Jukebox changed, previous versions would ask the user to find the catalog even though JBM reported it as found. This is fixed in this version. New Bug 2. On some computers, Load Image hung on Catalog # 15 on the latest Westlight Catalog CD disk, as well as on some other images. We have not found a foolproof way of reproducing this bug, but we have established that it does not occur with the new (version 2) PCDLIB.DLL, and that another application has the same problem with the old version of PCDLIB.DLL. The other application which fails is the Magic Lantern app bundled with Adaptec 1540 SCSI controllers. It can be made to show the same symptom as Browser (hangs for 5 - 10 minutes during loading, then recovers and finishes loading) by copying the version of PCDLIB.LIB which was compiled for Shoebox (dated 25 May 93, time 14:44:34) into its directory. Version 2 of PCDLIB does not exhibit this behaviour on the one computer at EPICAD on which we have been able to reproduce the original problem. However, the Progress indicator during loading still seems a little erratic - it may be worth tracing to ensure that there is not a misbehaving counter or timer or something. It is possible that a slightly erratic progress could be caused by a kind of interference effect between a timer in Shoebox code, which does not allow updating of the progress indicator more frequently than once a second, and a timer in PCDLIB code. We tried to examine the hanging version of the code using the Multiscope debugger, but the problem disappeared when the debugger was loaded (Heisenberg strikes again!). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shoebox 1.0.2b2 8 Feb 94 Fixed 1. Crash bug in JBM handling when several thumbnails are loaded (Shift select several thumbnails then shift double click). We are now freezing Shoebox until the JBM sends a message back to us. 2. If the database is on removable media, we check that the volume has not changed before any database operation. The check is done at the level of the menus and other controls, so we had to write new code into almost every menu or control. The code is, however, very repetitious. Close, exit etc are allowed without replacing the disk. 3. 2596 - Save Selected As works with Read Only Catalogs 4. There are changes to the code which allows reading from and disallows writing to Read Only catalogs and Write Protected media, so all cases should be tested (floppies and CD's, read and write, read followed by cut & paste, copy & paste, save, save as, save selected as, search, index) 5. 2895 - It is no longer necessary to copy the Help file into the new working directory if the working directory is changed. This change entailed modifying the Install routine so that it installs the SHOEBOX.INI in the WINDOWS directory, with the correct Helpfile path inside it. In the process we changed to version 2.0 of Install Shield and smoothed out the progress bar during install, so Install should be tested. 6. We can now do quite a useful set of operations across a network - see below. 7. I don't think you gave us a number for this bug - the application no longer accepts Number of Prints = 0 in any print screen. 8. The Help file has been changed to reflect the addition of the Jukebox manager. Changes are in the alphabetical list (Jukebox has been added), in the Search (ditto), and the text has been expanded to cover the Jukebox in the Photo Window and Contact Sheet topics. 9. Splash screen and version number have been changed. NETWORK CAPABILITIES. EPICAD ACCEPTS NO LIABILITY FOR ERRORS FOUND IN THE OPERATION OF SHOEBOX IN A NETWORKING ENVIRONMENT. THE PRODUCT WAS NOT DESIGNED TO WORK CORRECTLY ACROSS NETWORKS. This having been said, we have made some changes to make the product more network friendly, and have performed superficial testing. The following are our tentative conclusions. 1. Novell Netware 3.1 (Should be true of other Server-based networks, except as noted). 1.1 Can share read only catalogs on the server. 1.2 Can share Read/Write catalogs on the server if the remote Btrieve requester is used at the workstations, and if the Btrieve NLM is loaded on the server (Netware only) 1.3 Can share content files on the file server because Netware uses the same volume names on each workstation. (ie the volume "JIMSTUFF" on the server is seen by this name by all workstations). 2. Windows for Workgroups version 3.1 2.1 Can share Read Only catalogs on any shared drive. 2.2 Cannot share read/write catalogs 2.3 Can share a CD Rom drive for Photo CD's -Add Object -sharing catalogs Cat CD (.IRT, .CAT, .PCD) Photo CD (Overview.pcd) -not Load Contact Sheet 2.4 We can share content files on the network, but the user must show Shoebox where they are, because each workstation gives each shared drive a different volume name, and Shoebox stores the volume name in the catalog. The user double clicks on the image, then navigates his way to the image in the resulting File Open dialog. There is a small glitch in this behaviour at present - on our test system Shoebox thinks the Content file is in drive A: and gives a Dos Critical Error message. However, if the user cancels this message and follows the chain of dialogs, he will end up loading the image and setting the same path for all other content files in the same directory. Not Fixed 2376 We are still getting a message about network drives when we try to Save Object to a CD. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox 1.0.2 This is the first release candidate to include DDE communication with the Kodak Jukebox Manager. It is based on the code of Shoebox 1.0.1 b9. Since the 1.0.2 engineering drop the following changes have been made; -JP01 and JP02 dialogs changed to reflect changes in Shoebox 1.0.2 Jukebox Manager Support Functional Requirement spec, Jan 28, 94. The wording in the dialog has been changed to correspond to that in the spec, and the Retry and Cancel buttons in JP02 have changed function to reflect the spec. *New messages needed in International apps. Other bug fixes 2399 Catalog can now be loaded from write protected disk. If the user tries to save to the disk, he gets an error message. *New message needed in International apps. 2596 Shoebox can open Read Only catalogs. If the user tries to save back to the catalog he gets an error message. He can Save As. Problem with Save Selected As - field values not saved. *New message needed in International apps. 2624 Close is no longer grayed out after the user closes one of several open catalogs 2190 Load Contact Sheet and Open now work from an Image window, whether minimised or not. 2384 Get Info hot key has been changed from Ctrl-I to Ctrl-G. Add Directory (which was Ctrl-G) is now Ctrl-A 2588 Rename message in Define Fields is as requested. 2621 You can now scroll to the end of a long list field in Get Info. 2666 Not fixed. However, a related bug is fixed. Font styles in the image and get info print dialogs are remembered independently. Font color not fixed yet. 2723 If the user tries to play a Word file or QT movie without the relevant application present, the user gets an error message. *New message needed in International apps. 2795 Shoebox install automatically backs up WIN.INI to WIN.SHO. No messages are given to the user. THIS SHOULD BE MENTIONED IN THE USER README FILE. "Shoebox Install writes a line in the Btrieve section of WIN.INI. This may change the Btrieve settings of other programs which use Btrieve and have already written Btrive settings to WIN.INI. Shoebox Install backs up the original version of the WIN.INI file to WIN.SHO." 2895 All "Print to file" will send files to the directory which was listed as the Shoebox Working Directory on Shoebox startup (as agreed with Jim Holmes). If the user changes the Working Directory, he should restart Shoebox and copy the Help file to the new Working Directory. "New Bug" Almost fixed - the listboxes in Index, Keywords line up except for a 1 pixel error we were unable to avoid. Not Fixed: SPLASH SCREEN - we don't yet have a 1.0.2 splash screen. 2336 "Save Changes". Too many places in the code must be modified to make this a safe change at this time. The code as is is "Fail Safe" whereas the alternative would probably have created cases in which we would have failed to prompt the user. 2376 Save Object to CD still give message referring to Network Drives. This is a Windows message - to date Microsoft has given us no way to distinguish a network drive from a CD. Word has the same problem. 2666 Remembering Font style necessitates a change in the Catalog format (Log Font is saved in a Catalog, but it does not include Font Style). This is too great a change to make so close to release. 2737 Zoom in. Didn't get around to it... 2796 Add Object on appl_cdi.pcd. We don't get an error code from PCDLIB. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.0.2 Engineering drop No readme was included with this drop, which offered the first view of the JBM link code, superimposed on Shoebox 1.0.1 b6. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox 1.0.1 b9 25 Jan 94 1. Version number changed to Version 1.0.1 2. Bug 5 in the b8 list is now completely fixed. 3. New item for the README.TXT file in distribution. This is a feature, not a bug. If the user indexes one and only one photo with an indexed list data value, then removes the indexing by deselecting the item in the Index Helper list, the data value is removed from the helper list. In other words, if no photos are referencing a data value, it will be removed. Shoebox 1.01 b8 25 Jan 94 Bugs Fixed 1. Create new field in an empty catalog and delete it immediately. Shoebox hangs 2. Add new indexing to an old catalog, then cut or copy and paste (or drag and drop). New indexing is not copied. 3. Copy matching fields with different separator in a list field - the list field in the destination was empty. It now copies correctly and uses the new separator. 4. Create a new text field, populate its data list, exit from the data list with OK, reenter the data list, then delete a data value. Do a copy and paste or save and the deleted value appears in the destination data list. 5. Delete a data value in a list field (such as Colors in the sampler). Enter index. Any record which included the deleted value has lost that value, but it has also lost the last value in its list. THIS BUG IS PARTIALLY BUT NOT COMPLETELY FIXED. WE ARE CONTINUING TO WORK ON IT. As well as testing the functions mentioned above, testers should look for side effects in Get Info and Search (after deletion or drag and drop, do the data lists show up correctly and does the search work?) and in Export, which uses the same Comma Separated Value code which was fixed in 5 above. Shoebox 1.01b7 This release included '94 splash screens, and the Install routine had the last 2 internationalisation problems fixed - the "Cancel" button is now "Annuler" in french, and the "severe" message box (which you see if a file is missing or corrupted) now uses the Shoebox Install title in place of "Severe", which was not translated in the old version. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox/BROWSER 1.01 Beta 6 21 Dec 93 Bugs fixed: - The overall printing in Shoebox has been repaired and is ready for thorough testing. - Mainly the printing of poster size images in all orientations with all possible dpi settings now work as designed. - It was discovered that the reported bug on the HP DeskJet 550C, where a poster size image in landscape mode printed a repeated stripe of the image, is due to the fact that the Printer driver seems to do this when a program uses the WINDOWS GDI function SetDIBitsToDevice() to send a bitmap to the printer. The KLUDGE that we put in to make it work is for that printer driver only the program uses the GDI function StretchDIBits(). Unresolved problem: - For some reason unknown to us the HP DeskJet 550C Printer driver cannot print anything in draft mode. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox/BROWSER 1.01 Beta 5 16 Dec 93 NOTE: THE PRINTING UTILITIES IN SHOEBOX FOR LARGE IMAGES SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS WORK IN PROGRESS. Bugs fixed: - As of BETA 5: Shoebox uses SLANGUAG.DLL because it has been discovered that Windows uses a System Variable called LANGUAGE.DLL when a language other than english is used in INTERNATIONAL. This caused Shoebox to think that its own LANGUAGE.DLL was already loaded and therefore crashes when trying to access a text string from the DLL. feature added: - all NUMBER Fields now display in the same format as chosen in INTERNATIONAL Number Format. (i.e. the 1000 separator and the decimal separator) - Date and time in the footer of printed page now takes into account INTERNATIONAL Date and Time Formats. - In IMPORT: if an imported file has discrepancies between the number of fields and the number of data values, a Message Box is displayed with this information: << Too (many or few) fields read at line LLL of the Import File. RRR fields have been read where FFF was expected. >> Where LLL is the line number in the file, RRR is the number of data fields read on that line, and FFF is the number of fields defined at the top of the file. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox 1.01 Beta 4 (FranĪaise) 03 Dec 93 THIS IS A PRELIMINARY FRENCH VERSION OF SHOEBOX FOR SCREEN DUMPS OF CONTACT SHEET, SEARCH DIALOG AND INDEX DIALOG as requested. Note: The translation of the product name for (KODAK Shoebox Image Manager) is << Gestionnaire d'image Shoebox de KODAK >>. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox/BROWSER 1.01 Beta 4 29 Nov 93 bugs fixed: - Westlight 1.62: the GPF on attempt to save contactsheet to hard disk is now fixed. It was a 64k buffer problem, It would be useful to have a realy humongous Cat CD (20000 tiny images or more) with pertinent data so that we could test the pants off of BROWSER. - Hitting enter during save of large catalog will not cause the save to be aborted anymore. As a matter of fact any status box without a cancel button would have aborted if enter was pressed. NOT any more. - The sound blaster crash when quiting the slide show during play of a sound file should not occur any more. Please test with Sound Blaster and any other Sound board and drivers. - Mac exported files that lack an ending carriage return will be properly used and will not hang the program. comments - The preference setting in SETTINGS.WIN will now overide and replace the preference in the INI File. - A few inconsistencies in the default font size for printing have been dealt with. IMPORTANT - As of BETA 4: BROWSER uses BMCM.DLL and BLANGUAG.DLL to distinguish them from the Shoebox versions. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox/BROWSER 1.01 Beta 3 18 Nov 93 bugs fixed: - 1.6.2 Catalog is now loaded with proper orientation and no GPF on loading of image. - no GPF on printing image or printing Get Info before printing Contact Sheet. - Shoebox no longer recognises JPEG images in Save Object As, Add Object and Add Directory. - In slide show: - audio files no longer stop the slide show. - MOV and DOC slides are ignored. - chosen Audio file in slide show set up is played between each slide. - in Beta 2, File Open did not work unless a CD Drive was connected. This has been rectified. feature added: - Opening OVERVIEW.PCD on a Catalog CD is now loaded as a standard Photo CD. (thumbnails and images reflect the ImagePac) comments: - the ThumbnailAttributes in SETTINGS.WIN must be identical to the desired field in the Catalog Data Base (i.e. case sensitive). - the Help Window now disapears when Shoebox or BROWSER is exited. - New Help File for BROWSER is delivered with this drop. (This help file has already been delivered separately). --------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox 1.01 Beta 2 11 Nov 93 This version makes Shoebox and Browser from exactly the same build. 1 restriction: - Cannot run Shoebox and BROWSER simultaneously 4 bugs fixed; - Can now open OVERVIEW.CAT on Catalog CD - In BROWSER the accelerator keys for NON-BROWSER features are now disabled. - Save WPG 24 bit (converted to 8 bits) - Fixed loss of strings after closing catalogs 1 feature added: -Shoebox will read files with the names XXXX.CAT XXXX1.CAI XXXX2.JPS in addition to the usual filenames. -Shoebox does not write these files -This is to accomodate the writing of catalogs onto High Sierra CD's which do not support funny characters. This feature is not in the spec, but has been added at the request of Photodisk, and it is a sensible feature. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoebox 1.01 Beta 1 02 Nov 93 This Beta Version of Shoebox is similar to the 1.0 GOLD Extra features: - the CAT CD 1.6.2 design changes have been implemented. note: catalogues below 1.6 will not be loaded please advise as to highest version. - the changes requested in Shoebox/Browser Additional Requirements Version 0.3 (Jim Holmes, Aug 3) have been implemented. note: The settings file has been implemented as a standard Windows .INI file. - all strings have been put in resource files. - overall performance and memory usage have been solidified. This version is a Shoebox version; a Browser version will follow within 2 days. The difference will be only in the product name, the elimination of certain menu items, and the Help text.
