ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-1
CHAPTER 2 GETTING STARTED
2.0 PRELIMINARY DISCUSSION
This chapter covers the procedures for setting up Enable Reader.
You should do this before actually running the Enable Reader
program, which will be detailed in the next chapter.
The first topic is a description of the different versions of
the Enable Reader Professional Speech System . Then the contents
of the Enable Reader package is described, detailing the
Operations Manual and the Enable Reader Disks, and how they are
meant to be used for learning Enable Reader.
Then there is an explanation of how to connect your speech
synthesizer to the computer, followed by the procedure to create
work disks from the disks that came with the Enable Reader
package. The last section discusses how auto execution works,
and how you can change it for your own purposes. Once you have
completed the above sections, you are ready to actually run the
Enable Reader program.
You will just read or listen to the first part of this chapter.
When you reach SECTION 2.4 ATTACHING THE VOICE SYNTHESIZER,
you will actually follow the instructions given from then on.
2.1 VERSIONS OF ENABLE READER PROFESSIONAL
The Enable Reader program currently supports seven speech
synthesizers:
*ARTIC BOARD (ARTIC TECHNOLOGY)
CALLTEXT 5050 (SPEECH PLUS)
DECTALK DT C01 (DIGITAL EQUIPMENT)
ECHO GP (STREET ELECTRONICS)
*VOTALKER IB BOARD (VOTRAX, INC.)
VOTRAX PSS (VOTRAX, INC.)
VOTRAX PSS/B (VOTRAX, INC.)
*NOTE: BOTH THE ARTIC AND VOTALKER BOARDS REQUIRE THE PORTTTALK
PROGRAM FOR OPERATION. THE ENABLE READER PROGRAM USES A
SPECIAL HARDWARE INTERRUPT AS ONE METHOD OF ENTERING THE
SCREEN REVIEW MODE - CONTROL SHIFT. THIS OPTION IS NOT
AVAILABLE WHEN RUNNING THE ABOVE BOARDS DUE TO CONFLICTS
IN THE BOARDS MEMORY RESIDENT SOFTWARE AND PORTTALK.
THIS MEANS THAT PROGRAMS SUCH AS SUPERKEY MUST USE THE
SOFTWARE INTERRUPT - CONTROL RIGHT BRACKET - AND WILL NOT
ALLOW SCREEN REVIEW ON MANY PROGRAMS THAT WRITE THEIR
KEYBOARD HANDLING ROUTINES SUCH AS SIDEKICK AND SUPERKEY.
WE STRONGLY RECCOMMEND THE PURCAHSE OF A SYNTHESIZER
ACCESSED THROUGH A SERIAL PORT. NOT ONLY ARE THEY PORTABLE
FROM MACHINE TO MACHINE, BUT ARE MORE COMPATIBLE WITH
IBM PC SOFTWARE.
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-2
There is a different version of the Enable Reader program for
each synthesizer. Each version starts up and has default controls
for that synthesizer. Any version of the program can run with any
synthesizer by just loading in the correct table. This can be done
even when the program was started up with another synthesizer.
You can identify which version of Enable Reader you are running
by listening to the Startup Message that is spoken when you
first execute Enable Reader. Thus you can check whether the
version of the program matches your synthesizer. The Startup
Message and the name of the Enable Reader program for each of
the synthesizers is given here:

2.2 THE OPERATIONS MANUAL
The Enable Reader 4.0 Professional Speech Systems Operations
Manual is provided on three different media:
1. PRINTED on 8-1/2 x 11 paper.
2. RECORDED on SIX 90 minute audio cassette tapes.
(AVAILABLE SOON)
3. RECORDED ON A FLOPPY DISKETTE. The disk is called the MANUAL
Disk, and the Manual is broken up into eleven text files on
the disk. There is also a file named README.DOC which
contains updates to the Manual.

Thus the Operations Manual can be read from the printed
material, or listened to by playing the cassettes in a tape
recorder. Once you are familiar with Enable Reader, you can use
it to listen to the Manual. You can use the DOS TYPE command
to display the files on the screen and speak them. Or, if you
have a word processor that will handle standard Ascii text
files, you can just load the MANUAL Disk files into your word
processing program on your computer, and listen to them through
your speech synthesizer.
When written text is spoken through a speech synthesizer, it
will not always sound exactly as the text implies. For
instance, punctuation marks are used to denote pauses, end of
sentences, et cetera, but a voice synthesizer will actually
speak some of the punctuation marks. Sections of the Manual on
the disk may be deliberately oriented towards listening through
a synthesizer. Therefore, a lot of the punctuation (mostly
commas) may have been taken out of some of the text files. This
makes the files a little harder to read, but a lot easier to
listen to.
The printed Manual is the same text as the files on the MANUAL
Disk, so it too may be missing a lot of punctuation in some
sections. If you listen to the text files and there are too many
commas spoken, you can use the M PUNCTUATION FILTER command, or
the N PUNCTUATION LEVEL command to screen out the commas. (You
will learn about these punctuation commands later.)
The recorded tapes of the Manual match the printed manual. (In
fact, the recordings were made by reading the manual out loud.)
Thus when learning to use Enable Reader, a blind person can
listen to the tapes, and a sighted person can follow along with
the printed Manual.
2.3 CONTENTS OF ENABLE READER DISKS
There are FOUR floppy disks in the Enable Reader package. The
names of these disks, are 1) PROGRAM, 2) MANUAL, 3) VOTRAX
WORDPROCESSING, and 4) DECTALK WORDPROCESSING. A description of
their contents, follows:
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-5
PROGRAM Disk -
The program diskette is divided into seven sections called sub
directories. The main directory is called the root directory and
looks as follows when DIR <ENTER> is typed.
Volume in drive A is 1 PROGRAM
Directory of A:/
README xxxxx 12-22-86 1:00p
ARTIC <DIR> 12-22-86 1:00p
CALLTEXT <DIR> 12-22-86 1:00p
DECTALK <DIR> 12-22-86 1:00p
ECHO <DIR> 12-22-86 1:00p
VOTALKER <DIR> 12-22-86 1:00p
VOTRAX <DIR> 12-22-86 1:00p
VOTRAX_B <DIR> 12-22-86 1:00p
8 File(s) xxxxx bytes free
The seven sub-directories contain the following synthesizer
programs and tables:
SUB-DIRECTORY: SYNTHESIZER:
ARTIC ARTIC BOARD
CALLTEXT CALLTEXT 5050
DECTALK DECTALK DTC01
ECHO ECHO GP
VOTALKER VOTALKER IB
VOTRAX VOTRAX PSS
VOTRAX_B VOTRAX PSS/B
The SEVEN sub-directories and their contents are accessed by
changing directories with the Change Directory Command. For
example, to access the contents of the sub-directories type at the
DOS command prompt cd/ and then the name of the subdirectory
desired followed by a carriage return. TO ACCESS THE VOTRAX PSS
PROGRAM AND THE TABLES FOR GENERAL OPERATION TYPE:
A>cd/votrax <ENTER>
THIS IS READ "C D BACKSLASH VOTRAX ENTER"
Once the command is typed the sub-directory is available for
reading with the DIR command. This will allow you to look at the
contents in the directory of the diskette. Later in this chapter
you will be instructed on how to create your own diskettes.
Below are the contents of each sub-directory:
1. One of the files is the Enable Reader Professional Speech
program for your particular speech synthesizer. This program
is generic, in the sense that it can run with any supported
synthesizer by just loading in the correct table for that
synthesizer.
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-6
In chapter 4 you will be taught how to load
and save tables. We send a ready to run program as a
convenience so you can get up and running without having to
know how the Enable Reader program. This program is ONE of
the following files, depending on which sub-directory you have
entered:
ARTIC.EXE - ARTIC speech synthesizer.
ENABLE_C.EXE - CALLTEXT 5050 speech synthesizer.
ENABLE_D.EXE - DECTALK DT C 0 1 speech synthesizer.
ENABLE_E.EXE - ECHO GP speech synthesizer.
VOTALKER.EXE - VOTALKER IB speech synthesizer.
ENABLE_V.EXE - VOTRAX PSS speech synthesizer.
ENABLE_B.EXE - Votrax PSS/B speech synthesizer.
2. Another file is the Enable Default Table for Enable Reader,
called ENABLE.TBL . This file is automatically read by the
Enable Reader program when Enable Reader is first executed.
It contains the command settings and parameters used by
Enable Reader. While you are using Enable Reader, you can
change settings in it and then save the changes. If the
changes are saved as the ENABLE.TBL file, the next time the
program is run it will start up with the new changes as
default settings.
3. There are TABLES for the Enable Reader Professional Speech
System for different PORTS at different SPEEDS. Any of these
tables can be renamed to ENABLE.TBL in order to have the
Enable Reader Professional Speech System start for any
supported speech synthesizer or they can be loaded directly
while Enable Reader is running in order to change the
Port/Setup parameters of a new synthesizer on the fly. Many
times the system you need to connect to (ie. a mini or
mainframe computer or an IBM LAN ) is preset to a certain
configuration. The following tables can allow the Enable
Reader Program to be set at different speeds and for different
communications ports:
1200 BAUD/ COMMUNICATION PORT 1
1200COM1.CTX - CALLTEXT 5050 speech synthesizer
1200COM1.DEC - DECtalk DT C 0 1 speech synthesizer.
1200COM1.ECO - Echo GP speech synthesizer.

MANUAL DISK -
The contents of the Enable Reader MANUAL Disk are as follows:
1. An Update File for the Operations Manual, called
README.DOC. This file contains changes and updates to the
Operations Manual.
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-8
2. The Enable Reader Professional Speech Systems Operations
Manual. The manual is divided into fourteen files, whose
names all end with ".DOC" . The order of the filenames in
the directory of the MANUAL Disk is the same order in which
the text occurs in the Manual.
3. A sample Ascii file called EXAMPLE . You can display it on
the screen, and try out the Enable Reader screen review
commands on it.
VOTRAX AND DECTALK DISKS:
The VOTRAX and DECTALK disks have two sections. The root
directory and the sub-directory called WORDSTAR. Both disks
contain the same structure. They have programs, tables, and macro
files for SUPERKEY for the respective synthesiser the disk is
named for. The ROOT directory contains the AUTOMATION PACKAGE FOR
WORDPERFECT. The WORDSTAR sub-directory contains the AUTOMATION
PACKAGE FOR WORDSTAR.
THE WORDSTAR SUB-DIRECTORY CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING:
1. Integration Tables for Wordstar. We have included these
18 tables as a convenience for those of you who will
be using Wordstar. Thus you do not have to create your own
tables to use with the Integration feature of the Enable
Reader program. These tables are all of the files whose
names end with ".TBL" , except ENABLE.TBL . Each of these
tables is to be used with a different Wordstar screen
display. Chapter 7 in the Manual contains a list of these
Tables and where each Table is used. They will be
automatically loaded for you.
2. Superkey macro files for Wordstar. There are 9 corresponding
and macro files for the major screens in Wordstar.
The Superkey macro files are automatically loaded when they
are needed. A more detailed discussiion can be found in
Chapters 7, 8, and 9 on their contents, how they are created,
and how they run.
3. A sample Wordstar text file called TESTFILE . You can use
this file with Wordstar to try out the "Matchup" command of
the Integration feature. The file itself contains the
instructions for doing so.
4. The Startup File, called RUN.BAT . It tells the computer
to load and activate Superkey, the Enable Reader program, then
prompts you whether to enter the date and time or run
Wordstar.
5. Another file named INIT.BAT configures the Superkey Program
before running the Automation Package. It only needs to be
run once when Superkey is first copied into the Word
Proccessing sub-directory on your machine.
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-9
THE ROOT DIRECTORY CONTAINS:
1. Integration Tables for WORD PERFECT. There are 5
tables created as a convenience for those of you who will
be using Word Perfect. Thus you do not have to create your
own tables to use with the Integration feature of the Enable
Reader program. These tables are all of the files whose
names end with ".TBL" , except ENABLE.TBL . Each of these
tables is to be used with different Word Perfect screen
displays. Chapter 8 in the Manual contains a list of these
Tables and where each Table is used.
2. Superkey macro files for Word Perfect. There are 43
corresponding tables and macro files for the major screens in
Wordstar. The Superkey macro files are automatically loaded
when they are needed. A more detailed discussiion can be
found in Chapters 7, 8, and 9 on their contents, how they are
created, and how they run.
3. A sample Word Perfect text file called TESTFILE . You can
use this file with Word Perfect to try out the "Matchup"
command of the Integration feature. The file itself contains
the instructions for doing so.
4. The Startup File, called RUN.BAT . It tells the computer
to load and activate Superkey, the Enable Reader program, then
prompts you whether to enter the date and time or run
Word Perfect.
5. Another file named INIT.BAT configures the Superkey Program
before running the Automation Package. It only needs to be
run once when Superkey is first copied into the Word
Proccessing sub-directory on your machine.
2.4 ATTACHING THE VOICE SYNTHESIZER
Up to this point, you have been just reading or listening to the
Manual. This rest of this chapter describes the setup
procedures that you need to do before running Enable Reader.
You should actually follow the instructions given.
All seven versions of Enable Reader are pre-set to use Serial Port
One, and handshake using the XON/XOFF protocol. The CALLTEXT,
ECHO GP, VOTRAX PSS, and the VOTRAX PSS/B versions run at 9600
Baud; the DECtalk Version runs at 1200 Baud.
Your particular speech synthesizer is to be connected directly
to your computer with a cable, and no special interfaces are
required. The cable is connected between Serial Port One on the
computer, and the Serial port on the synthesizer. A cable can
be provided for your synthesizer if you do not have one.
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-10
WARNING - You can NOT use just any cable that happens to fit
into the serial port connectors on your computer and your
synthesizer. The cable has to be made specifically for
connecting your particular computer and synthesizer together.
Otherwise you may damage your synthesizer. Also be sure to plug
the correct end of the cable into each device -- the two ends of
the cable might not be wired identically.
The CALLTEXT and ECHO GP has only one port, and it is serial.
However, the Votrax and DECtalk each have two ports on the back.
The serial port on the Votrax is the left side port as you face
the synthesizer from the front, and it is labeled SERIAL PORT .
It is located in the middle of the machine. The DECtalk has two
Serial ports, but you want to use the one labeled HOST PORT ,
which is the right side port as you face the synthesizer from
the front.
The Votrax synthesizer also has some DIP switches that need to
be set. Refer to the Votrax Operator's Manual for the settings.
You should set the switches for: 9600 baud; XON/XOFF protocol;
7 bit word length; power-up message ON; SERIAL port; RUN mode.
2.5 SETTING UP YOUR DISKS
NOTE - WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT THE FOLLOWING STEPS BE DONE IN
THE PRESENCE OF A SIGHTED PERSON. UNTIL YOU ARE USING
ENABLE READER, YOU WILL NEED SOMEONE TO TELL YOU WHAT THE
COMPUTER PRINTING TO THE SCREEN.
The Enable Reader package comes with FOUR disks: a PROGRAM
Disk, a MANUAL Disk, and two AUTOMATION PACKAGE DISKS for the
VOTRAX PSS and the Dectalk speech synthesizer.
The first thing to do before using Enable Reader is to protect
yourself in case you accidentally damage your only copies of the
software. You need to make copies of each of the disks in the
Enable Reader package. Then you can use the copies, and store
the originals in a safe place. Next you need to put the Enable
Reader program on a System Disk. The following will guide you
through the steps for accomplishing these tasks.
WE DO NOT RECCOMEND RUNNING THE AUTOMATION PACKAGES WITHOUT A HARD
DISK. THE TABLES AND MACROS MUST BE AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES. THIS
REQUIRES THE STORAGE CAPACITY OF A HARD DISK.
If you have a computer with two floppy disk drives, proceed with
the next section entitled "For Computers With Two Floppy Disk
Drives". If you are using a Hard Disk, skip ahead to the
section "For Computers With A Hard Disk".
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-11
FOR COMPUTERS WITH TWO FLOPPY DISK DRIVES:
1. Turn on your computer and boot it with an MSDOS or PCDOS
System Disk in Drive A . The DOS has to be Version 2.00 or
higher. When the boot process is finished, there will be
an A> showing on the screen signifying that the default
drive is Drive A .
2. If you want to listen to the computer's responses during
the following operations, you can use Enable Reader to do
so. If your synthesizer is not yet hooked up to your
computer, or you otherwise do not wish to run Enable Reader
during these operations, then skip this step and proceed
with Step 3 to make copies of the Enable Reader Disks.
To run Enable Reader:
A) First turn on your synthesizer.
B) Put the Enable Reader PROGRAM Disk into Drive A .
CHANGE SUB-DIRECTORIES TO YOUR SYNTHESIZER TYPE.
Next, type in the name of your version of the Enable
Reader program, and then hit the ENTER key. (To find
which name to type in, refer back to SECTION 2.1
VERSIONS OF ENABLE READER PROFESSIONAL, or SECTION 2.3
CONTENTS OF ENABLE READER DISKS, in this manual.) For
example, if your synthesizer is the Votrax PSS, you will
type:
A>ENABLE_V.EXE <ENTER>
C) You should hear the Enable Reader Startup Message.
Enable Reader is now running. It is set to speak any
characters that are sent to the screen to be displayed.
3. Make copies of the Enable Reader Disks. To do this:
1) Put a DOS System Disk (with FORMAT.COM and
DISKCOPY.COM on it) into Drive A .
2) Type:
A>DISKCOPY A: B: <ENTER>
3) When the computer says to put disks into the
drives, put the Enable Reader PROGRAM Disk into Drive A
and put a blank disk into Drive B . Then hit any key to
begin duplicating the Enable Reader Disk.
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-12
4) When the copying is done, the computer will ask you
if you wish to copy another disk. Take the disks out of
the drives. The disk from Drive B is your copy of the
Enable Reader PROGRAM Disk. Put a label and a write-
protect tab on it. Type Y for yes to tell the
computer that you want to copy another disk.
5) Now repeat the copy procedure THREE more times,
following the computer's instructions. Copy the Enable
Reader MANUAL , and the TWO AUTOMATION DISKS.
After the last copy, type N for NO to tell the computer that
you do not want to make any more copies.
You should put the original Enable Reader Disks in a safe place,
and use the copies from now on. Next, you will put the Enable
Reader program on a System Disk.
4. Format a blank disk, putting the Operating System on it in
the process. To do this:
1) Put the DOS Disk back in Drive A and type:
A>FORMAT B:/S <ENTER>
2) When the computer tells you, put a blank disk into
Drive B and hit any key to go ahead with the formatting.
3) When the formatting is done, the computer will ask
you if you wish to format any more disks. Just hit the
letter N key to tell it NO . The A> prompt will
return. You now have a formatted disk with the
Operating System on it.
5. We will now copy the Enable Reader Program, and the
ENABLE .TBL default file. for the synthesizer you wish to
work with. To do this:
1) Put the PROGRAM Disk into Drive A , and the disk
you just formatted into Drive B .
2) Change to the Synthesizer Sub-directory using the Change
Directory Command CD\ . Then type:
A>COPY *.* B:/V <ENTER>
The PROGRAM, TABLES INCLUDING THE DEFAULT TABLE, AND
AUTOMATIC STARTUP FILES on the PROGRAM Disk will now be
copied onto your formatted disk.
THIS DISK IS NOW AN ENABLE READER SYSTEM DISK AND
CAN BE USED WITH THOUSANDS OF IBM PC PROGRAMS.
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-13
When you use this Enable Reader System Disk to boot your
computer, Enable Reader will automatically start up for you.
Now that your disks are set up, you are ready to use Enable
Reader. Chapter 3 gives a general summary of how to work with
the Enable Reader features. Chapters 4 and 6 give detailed
descriptions of each of the commands. Chapters 7, 8, and 9 give
detailed instructions on how to run the Automation Package with
Enable Reader.
The next section is for setting up Enable Reader with a hard
disk. If you have a computer with two floppy disk drives, and
if you have already set up your disks by following the
instructions in the previous section, then skip ahead to
SECTION 2.6 AUTO EXECUTION in this manual. If you have a
computer with a hard disk, proceed with the next section
entitled "For Computers With A Hard Disk".
FOR COMPUTERS WITH A HARD DISK:
1. Turn on your computer and go through the boot process. The
DOS has to be Version 2.00 or higher.
B) Type:
A: <ENTER>
This will set the default drive to Drive A .
C) Put the Enable Reader PROGRAM Disk into Drive A .

the PROGRAM Disk will now be copied onto your hard disk.
THE HARD DISK IS NOW SET UP TO AUTOMATICALLY RUN THE
ENABLE READER PROGRAM AND CAN BE USED WITH THOUSANDS OF
IBM PC PROGRAMS.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CREATE AN AUTOMATION SUB-DIRECTORY
FOR THE WORDSTAR OR WORD PERFECT PROGRAM PROCEED WITH STEPS
3 THROUGH 6 BELOW. IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO MAKE AN
AUTOMATION SUB-DIRECTORY THEN SKIP AHEAD TO SECTION 2.6 AUTO
EXECTION FILES.
3) It is reccomended that a special sub-directory is
created to run the Wordstar and Word Perfect automation
packages. Below is an example of how to create and copy
files into a sub-directory. First, we create a sub-
directory with the MAKE DIRECTORY command. To create a
sub-directory for the Word Perfect Automation Package
you would type from the C> prompt:
mkdir \wordperf <ENTER>
Or for the Wordstar Automation Package type:
mkdir \wordstar <ENTER>
4) Now we need to change SUB-DIRECTORIES on BOTH Drive A:
and drive C:. Then we will copy the Automation Package
over.
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-16
From the C> prompt, change to the Sub-directory you
created by typing:
cd\wordperf <ENTER>
or for the Wordstar sub-directory type:
cd\wordstar <ENTER>
The sub-directory for Wordstar on the Automation Disk
in drive A: is accessed by changing directories with
the CD/ or Change Directory command. For example, to
access the contents of the sub-directory type at the DOS
command prompt:
a: <ENTER>
This will change to the Floppy diskette as the default
drive. then type:
cd\WORDSTAR <ENTER>
Once the command is typed the sub-directory is available
for use. Next we will copy all the files in this
sub-directory by typing:
copy a:*.* c:/v <ENTER>
This will transfer all the files needed to run the
Enable Reader program and Superkey with the Wordstar
or Word Perfect program.
4) The final copy of files is to copy the Superkey Program
and the word processing program onto the newly created
system disk. First, place the Superkey disk into
drive A: and type:
A>copy a:key.exe c:/v <ENTER>
Then type:
A>copy a:key.hlp c:/v <ENTER>
FOR WORDSTAR
Next, place the Wordstar Master diskette into Drive A:
and type:
A>copy a:ws.com c:/v <ENTER>
Then type:
A>copy a:*.ovl c:/v <ENTER>

FOR WORD PERFECT
You must copy all disks onto the hard disk in the same
sub-directory. This is done by placing each disk in turn
into Drive A: and typing:
A>copy *.* c:/v <ENTER>
5) When the A> prompt returns, the copying is done.
The sub-directory in Drive C: is your Enable Reader
Automation System .
6) Take the disk out of Drive A:
When you want to run the Auotmation Package, change to this
sub-directory that contains the Enable Reader automation package
and type:
RUN <ENTER KEY>
The Enable Reader automation package will automatically start up
for you.
If you would like to have the Enable Reader program
automatically start up for you whenever you boot your
computer, you will have to add a command for the name of
the Enable Reader program to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
(See SECTION 2.6 AUTOEXECUTION.) This is not necessary at
this time, so if you are not sure how to do this, you can
skip it for now.

Reader. Chapter 3 gives a general summary of how to work with
the Enable Reader features. Chapters 4 and 6 give detailed
descriptions of each of the commands.
2.6 AUTO EXECUTION
The MSDOS Operating System looks for a specific Startup File
called AUTOEXEC.BAT when it first starts up. If this file
exists on the disk, then the computer executes the instructions
in the file before turning control of the computer over to you.
The following discussion is only a short example of how to write
a simple startup file. For a more complete explanation, refer
to the MSDOS manual for the sections on COPY and on BATCH FILES.
ENABLE READER 4.0 OPERATIONS MANUAL CHAPTER 2-18
The Enable Reader PROGRAM Disk contains an AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
This startup file contains only three instructions. These
instructions will load and run the Enable Reader program, ask
you to enter the date, and then ask you to enter the time.
These instructions are the same as could be typed in from the
keyboard when running the Operating System. Using an
AUTOEXEC.BAT file means you do not have to type the name of the
Enable Reader program every time you startup the machine. The
AUTOEXEC.BAT file can be created from the Operating System
without having to use a word processor.
The following procedure was used to create the file we supplied you.
1. Type COPY CON: AUTOEXEC.BAT <ENTER>
2. Type program name (eg. ENABLE_V.EXE) <ENTER>
3. Type DATE <ENTER>
4. Type TIME <ENTER>
5. Hit the F6 key, then hit the ENTER key. (NOTE: The F6
key enters a CONTROL Z , so if you want, you can hold
down the CONTROL key, tap the Z key, release the
CONTROL key, and tap the ENTER key for this step.)
The computer then creates the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and saves it
on the disk. From now on, every time you start or reboot the
computer with this disk, the instructions in this file are
executed first.
If you have followed the instructions for creating an Enable
Reader System Disk on a floppy disk, then the AUTOEXEC.BAT
file on that disk will automatically start Enable Reader
whenever you boot your computer with that disk.
If you are booting from a hard disk, chances are that there
already is an AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the hard disk. If you want
Enable Reader to start automatically when you boot the hard
disk, you need to add the name of your Enable Reader program to
the existing AUTOEXEC.BAT file. You can do this by looking at
the current contents of AUTOEXEC.BAT , and retyping all the
instructions with the name of the Enable program inserted. Or
you can use a word processing program to add the Enable program
to AUTOEXEC.BAT . The Enable program gets inserted into the
list of commands AFTER any hard disk initialization commands,
and BEFORE any other commands. If your hard disk does not
already have an AUTOEXEC.BAT file on it, you can just copy the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file from the Enable Reader PROGRAM Disk onto your
hard disk. Putting the name of your Enable Reader program into
the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on your hard disk is not really
necessary at this time, so if you are not sure how to do it, you
can skip it for now.
