  7.     WHY BUY VISUAL EDITING SOFTWARE?
  8.     The Ensoniq Musician's Manual describes the Mirage as "a computer
  9.  specially designed to process and reproduce sound".  The Mirage was built to
  10.  sound, not to communicate. That's where the SYNTHASSIST Visual Editing System
  11.  (VES) comes in. As a beginner, SYNTHASSIST will help you to learn the science
  12.  of sampling with the Mirage. As an experienced sampler, SYNTHASSIST will
  13.  provide the catalyst you need to break new ground and pursue new ideas.
  14.  The Mirage is a complex machine and SYNTHASSIST will be your guide. Like a
  15.  roadmap, you can get there without one, but it will sure save you alot
  16.   of time and aggravation.

  18.     SYNTHASSIST is software that provides control, just like the software
  19.  built into the Mirage.  With SYNTHASSIST, however, there are no parameter
  20.  numbers to look up or remember and no confusing hexadecimal notation
  21.  (FE=???).  But we didn't translate this information into symbols, just
  22.  plain english descriptions, menus, and simple one-keystroke commands.
  23.  You can move throughout the entire system quickly, easily, with the push
  24.  of a button.  For example [P] will allow you to edit the program parameters
  25.  from anywhere in the system.  SYNTHASSIST also allows you to coordinate
  26.  your efforts.  All of the pertinent parameters on one screen with graphical
  27.  interpretation.

  29.     WAVESAMPLES
  30.     The advantages of SYNTHASSIST are obvious right from the start.  First
  31.  the entire keyboard and wavesample assignments are displayed graphically.
  32.  Next the parameters for all eight wavesamples on the upper or lower half of
  33.  the keyboard are displayed,  You can then use the cusor and +/- keys to
  34.  easily edit the entire matrix to fine tune each sample.  This feature is
  35.  invaluable when trying to learn the effect of each parameter or coordinate
  36.  a complex mix of samples.

  38.     PROGRAMS
  39.     One of the most difficult concepts to understand and manipulate is that
  40.  of Mirage programs.  Their effects on your wavesamples is where the real
  41.  magic is performed.  SYNTHASSIST provides a listing of the pertinent
  42.  parameters as well as graphical interpretation of the amplitude and filter
  43.  envelopes.  Here again you can easily experiment and discover the
  44.  significance of each parameter.  And as with all SYNTHASSIST controls, you
  45.  can change programs with the press of a key.

  47.     GRAPH
  48.     SYNTHASSIST comes with a complete graphics package for editing your wave
  49.  samples. Any portion of the Mirage's memory can be viewed at varied
  50.  resolution, from 1 to 128 pages per screen.  This feature also uses simple
  51.  cusor movements to draw minor modifications to your actual digitized sound
  52.  wave. This will especially helpful in identifying aliasing, clipping, and
  53.  other areas as well as smoothing and adjusting loops.

  55.     SAMPLING
  56.     As you would expect, SYNTHASSIST provides a complete display of the
  57.  pertinent Mirage sampling and configuration parameters. In addition the
  58.  sampling time and tuning note will help to make your original sample, the
  59.  basis for all of your future efforts, as accurate as possible.

  61.     TOOLS and FILES
  62.     These two utility functions are provided to help you control the data in
  63.  the Mirage and on MASOS diskettes. SYNTHASSIST allows you to perform any
  64.  MASOS command (eg. copy, add, invert) through the simple TOOLS menu,
  65.  Portions of any sample can be moved or copied to any other location of
  66.  memory. Using the FILES function all samples and programs can be stored
  67.  and retrieved.

  69.     HELP and HARDCOPY
  70.     SYNTHASSIST even has a complete online help glossary. The F1 key provides
  71.  you with instant access to parameter descriptions and their acceptable
  72.  values. Finally, you may want to have a printout of your work for future
  73.  reference. The PC's print-screen (PrtSc) function can be used to generate hard
  74.  copies of any SYNTHASSIST screen.

  76.     WHAT HARDWARE is REQUIRED?
  77.     SYNTHASSIST id designed to operate on an IBM-PC or compatible. The PC
  78.  should be configured with at least 256k of memory and one disk drive, a
  79.  color/graphics board, and a composite monitor. In addition you will need the
  80.  Roland MPU-401 and interface card to provide the MIDI communications link
  81.  between the PC and the Mirage, and of course the MASOS software diskette.
