How to make the 4-D cube work in 3-D (from a 2-D screen!):
This program is described in "Computer Recreations" in the April 1986 issue of
Scientific American Magazine. Basically, the program projects a 4-dimensional
cube (a cube with sides in the w, x, y and z planes, if you will) into the two
dimensions of your computer screen. The 3-dimension part comes into play using
same principle used in 3-D movies and comic books. Two images, one with a
slightly different angular offset or "view," are projected onto the screen. To
see the hypercube in 3-D, sit with your eyes at approximately arm's length from
the screen and let your eyes relax, as if you were staring at the horizon. You
are getting sleepy, sleeeeeepy...
Seriously, if you do this right, you'll see a 3-D cube sitting in the middle of
the two projections on the screen. If it doesn't work at first, keep trying.
If it still doesn't work, try adjusting the distance of your eyes from the
screen (with smaller screens, like a Compaq's, about 18 inches away works).
Hit ESC to end the program.
Have fun!
