- Patch-Lib (C) 1986/1987
- All Rights Reserved

- Demonstration Documentation

- The Demonstration version of Patch-Lib may be freely distributed and shared
- via BBS systems. You are encouraged to try this program on your equipment prior
- to making a decision as to purchasing a license to use Patch-Lib.

-
-
- A patch librarian and utility program for the Korg(R) DW8000 synthesizer,
- Roland(R) MPU-401 and compatable interfaces running on an IBM(R) or 100%
- compatable computer. Patch-Lib (C) allows the downloading and uploading of
- single as well as entire 64 program groups of patches to and from the DW8000
- via midi. Patches may be viewed and edited as numeric data, VCA and VCF
- envelopes may be graphically displayed and program libraries may be created
- from master patch libraries. All patches may be saved to disk either
- individually or by library groups. The number of patches that may be maintained
- in libraries is unlimited. The program is designed to load as many as 500
- patches into memory at one time for easy transfer to working program libraries.
- The system requires 256k of memory.
-
- Patch-Lib (C) is menu driven for easy use but also contains direct command
- lines in certain operations for ease of stepping from one function to another.
-
- Patch-Lib (C) uses sophisticated error checking to ensure 100% reliability of data
- transfers to and from the DW8000. A complete 64 patch "program" may be reliably
- transferred and written to the DW8000 in less than 15 seconds. Data dumps from
- the DW8000 typically require less than 10 seconds.
-
- The demonstration version supplied contains 3 actual patch files which may be
- loaded, edited, displayed and transferred to a DW8000. THE DEMONSTRATION
- VERSION DOES NOT ALLOW SAVING PATCH DUMPS OR EDITS TO DISK. If you wish to
- try out the write to synth functions MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A TAPE BACKUP OF
- YOUR CURRENT PATCHES. Patch-Lib WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO RESTORE YOUR CURRENT
- PATCHES IF YOU SHOULD OVERWRITE THEM. YOU MUST RESTORE THEM VIA THE CASSETTE
- TAPE INTERFACE. The official version, of course, allows complete backup of
- all patch data to disk.
-
- Patch-Lib was created under the concept of "No-Frills Software". It is a
- sophisticated fully functional utilitarian program. It does not contain a
- flashy colorful interface which saves programming time and ultimately your
- cost. Patch-Lib is licensed to single users for $30.00 which is less than
- half the price of many librarians on the market. Patch-Lib is not copy
- protected.

- Getting Started with Patch-Lib
-
- Patch-Lib is based on the organization of patches into Master Libraries which
- may contain up to 500 patches each and Program Libraries which contain 64
- patches which may be dumped to the DW8000 in bulk. There is no limit imposed
- by Patch-Lib on the number of program or master libraries. Master libraries
- are created by dumping either single patches or program libraries from the
- DW8000 and transfering these patches to the master library. Any of the patches
- contained in the libraries may be viewed, edited and VCF and VCA envelopes
- graphically displayed in high resolution (640 X 400) on a color graphics
- adapter.
-
- Using Patch-Lib is very straight forward due to it's menu system however here
- are some tips for getting the most out of it:
-
- 1> Three files are included which contain actual DW8000 patches:
- DWMASTER.LIB (an example master library)
- ORCH.PRG (an example program library)
- PCH11.PAT ( a single patch dump)
- There is no restriction on naming your files (no standard extension) so
- you may use any file extension that is logical to you. To load and view
- any of the files go to the Display / Edit /Transfer menu and follow the
- prompts. Feel free to experiment as you cannot hurt anything. Just heed
- the previous warning about writing patches to the DW8000 with the demo.
-
- 2> To dump a patch or the entire contents of the DW8000, simply go to the
- "Dump Patches from Synth" menu and follow the prompts. You will be
- prompted as to whether you wish each patch to be date and time stamped
- as well as adding a name to each patch as it is dumped.
-
- 3> To create a new "Program Library" go to the Display /Edit / Transfer
- menu and select the "transfer master library to program library" function.
- The system will prompt you for all needed information.
-
- 4> Hardcopy printouts of the VCA/VCF graphics display are possible using
- the MSDOS graphics driver and an Epson or IBM compatible dot matrix
- printer. With the graphics driver installed prior to loading Patch-Lib,
- simply hit [SHIFT] [PRTSC] to dump the display to your printer. The
- graphics display requires a color graphics adapter or transparent mono
- graphics adapter such as the STB Chauffer card.
-
- 5> Other features include a 440 hertz tuning reference from your computer
- and a simple chromatic note routine to test out newly edited patches
- from your computer to a remote DW8000.
-
- 6> Updating a program library for recent modifications to patches at the
- synthesizer is accomplished by first loading the program library from
- disk into memory. This insures that your descriptions previously entered
- are resident. A dump of the DW8000 can then be made answering "No" to
- the prompt for adding descriptions as the patches are dumped. The program
- library will then contain the newest data, date and time stamped, without
- requiring re-entry of patch names. The file may then be saved to disk
- writing over the old file.
