  6.                     MFF -to- Cakewalk ASCII Convertor
  7.  
  8. MFF2ASC.EXE is a program for the IBM compatible PC which will read in a MIDI
  9. Format File which is in either Format #0 or Format #1 and, from this data,
  10. generate an ASCII format file which can then be imported by Cakewalk Ver 2.0
  11. or later. To accomplish this, the ASCII file must be further processed by a
  12. utility which is distributed with Cakewalk software; ASC2CAKE.EXE. This
  13. program reads up the ASCII file contents and converts it into the binary
  14. format .WRK file that Cakewalk can understand.

  16. I wrote the MFF2ASC program when, in response to a question I raised on the
  17. CompuServ MIDI forum in July 1989, it was indicated that such a utility was
  18. not at that time available to the public, but that an update to Cakewalk
  19. (Version 3) was in the works which directly reads MFF formatted files.
  20.  
  21. As I mentioned above, to get the sequences all the way into Cakewalk, you have
  22. to process the ASCII file with ASC2CAKE.EXE. I did not include a copy of this
  23. program as it is copywritten. However, it is included in the Cakewalk Version
  24. 2.0 distribution diskettes. (In some earlier shipments they indicated that
  25. they ran out of room on the first diskette, preventing them from including
  26. this utility & examples, did not include the second diskette, and made you
  27. request this second diskette "Free of Charge" from Twelve Tone.) The format
  28. of the data in the ASCII file is described in the SAMPLE20.ASC file which is
  29. an example file included on this second Cakewalk distribution diskette.

  31. My MFF2ASC program does not presently do anything with SYSEX information or
  32. Comment Fields found in some MFF files. I, and many other MIDI users, have
  33. successfully used the MFF2ASC program to convert numerous MFF files available
  34. in various BBS libraries, but you must be certain to be using the ASC2CAKE
  35. Version 2.0. This will then create a .WRK file which can be read by Cakewalk
  36. sequencing software Version 2.0 or later.
