I. Brief Description
Safe Cracker! is a game of both luck and skill in which you, playing
the bank robber, are trying to find the combination to the safe and open it.
You will need to find the three numbers of the combination. Each number has a
"mistake limit" of three. This means you can mess up to three guesses, but if
you mess up the fourth, the alarm will ring, bringing the police.
Once you are gone, the bank starts using the safe again. Of course
you have gotten out of jail and intend to crack it for sure this time... but
can you do it? Otherwise, you proceed with sweating palms, trying to open the
safe and get all the cash stored inside. And if you can find enough, you may
well be the chief cracker!
II. Registration
Safe Cracker! is Shareware and you MAY copy and distribute it freely,
providing that if there is a cost of distribution, it is five dollars or less
per copy. Only unregistered versions may be copied and distributed;
registered versions may only be copied for backup, and may not be distributed.
If you use this program, please support the author by sending a
registration fee of only five (5) dollars and the form to the address below:

When I receive your registration, I will send a disk back to you
with the most recent, registered version of Safe Cracker! and some other
programs you might want to try. (That's a surprise...) The registered
version has your name in it and has none of the wait times or shareware
notices as in the shareware version, and you can add to the data file.
Thanks again.
III. Program Requirements
Safe Cracker! requires an IBM PC/XT/AT or compatible. You need to
have DEVICE=ANSI.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS file. It will look better if in
color, but should still work in monochrome. If it doesn't, try a
CGA-simulator. If you get "strikeout" or underlined or italicized letters on a
monochrome screen, register and check the "monochrome version" box, and I'll
send you a monochrome version. You shouldn't have to worry about memory; this
will run in less than 64k. It requires only a floppy drive, and should work
with all versions of DOS including and from version 2.1.
IV. Program Operation
Type in "safec" to run the program. It will display the registration
message, then ask if you want to see instructions. Hit 'y' to see
instructions or any other key not to. You now see the "MOST WANTED" (aka
"High Score") board. Hit any key to start the game. You are now trying to
get the first number. Start with any guess number, then work from there. The
program will help by providing approximations, but you need to find the exact
number within four tries. As it says, the dial goes from 0-100. You cycle
through the dial by using up/down cursor keys, which move up/down one (1), or
the Page Up/Page Down keys, which move up/down by five (5). Each attempt at
getting the right number gets harder, because the approximations get rougher.
If you miss the fourth chance on any one, the police will get you. If you get
all three numbers, you get all the cash in the safe and maybe the highest
score. Even if you don't, the bank starts using the safe again and you get
another chance. If you want to quit while working on any number, just hit
ESC. I think this game is a cross between luck and skill, because sometimes
you can determine a number, and sometimes you need to outright guess. Anyway,
between the urge to crack safes and trying to beat the high score, you should
like it. Enjoy!
V. Safe Cracker! History
1) Sometime in late 1991 - Got the idea from a BBS game...
2) V. 1.00 - Loose framework of an idea; main functions
3) V. 1.01 - Most meat on the bones, but still needs some polishing;
drew safe pictures; made up calculation; chose colors;
title screen; high-score-board workings; wrote in endings;
wrote up preliminary doc's and registration form; chose
sounds.
4) V. 1.02 - Added high-score-board functions; changed approximation
math a little; changed a few colors; added "Last number
chosen:"; added option to spend or leave cash, and wrote
up SAFEC.DAT; added restart option; tuned up ending
"type" rate; made this version's final documentation and
registration form; uploaded to several BBS's and sent to
a few vendors; hoped to see registrations.
5) V. 1.03 - Due to loss of source code, COMPLETELY re-wrote the game.
Changed input of numbers, colors and some screens, end-
game stuff, high score board, and .DAT file structure.
New version sent to BBS's, CD-ROM makers, shareware
marketers.
6) In the future: I'm not really sure, but ideas like a BBS door and
a two-player "race" mode come to mind...I'll
also get lots of suggestions from registrants...I
hope!
----------------- See File SAFE.REG For The Registration Form ----------------
Last notices: (They're important)
There are two needed files: SAFEC.EXE and SAFEC.DAT. These
must stay together.
When copying this program for a friend or for distribution, or
when archiving this program, or uploading it to a BBS, all the
following files MUST be included:
SAFEC.EXE SAFEC.DAT SAFEC.DOC SAFEC.REG
...and the archive must be named SAFEC103.ZIP/ARC/LZH/etc.
If you wish to "re-roll" the high score, which resets the
high score board, you can type an "R" at the prompt after
the high score board.
Warning: Even though the SAFEC.DAT & SAFEC.HGH files may look
normal when TYPEd, they should not be edited in any
way, as it will halt execution of Safe Cracker! when
these files come into play.
Please remember to fill out & send the registration form with
your payment...if you have no printer just write out the
vital information in it...thanks again...your comments count!
