──────────┤ Welcome ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
Welcome to the playable-demo version of Invasion of the Mutant Space Bats
of Doom by Elven Software Company. You should have these files:
BATS.EXE
INFO.EXE
BATS.DOC
README.DOC
BATS.DAT
BATSDEMO.DES
VENDER.DOC
ORDER.DOC
If any of these files are missing, please contact us.
The game may also create other files (for configuration, etc..) Please
include only the above files when you make copies for your friends (or
give them the original ZIP file). If you received any files besides
those listed above, you should erase them before playing for the first
time.

──────────┤ What's Up ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
This playable demo allows you to watch and/or play Invasion of the Mutant
Space Bats of Doom. Available for play are three rounds of battle and
one bonus round. This gives you a chance to enjoy yourself and decide if
this game's for you. If so, you may order it from us (see ORDER.DOC).
You may play this demo version as often as you like, and keep it for as
long as you like, with no restrictions or obligations. You may copy this
package (the ZIP file) for your friends. Thanks!
The demo mode of this game allows you to preview even more rounds.
┌─────────────────────┐
──────────┤ Game Requirements ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
The game runs under DOS on a PC compatible. It should be a fast PC- a 386
or 486 is fine.
Memory: 550K of free memory is required to run the game with digital sound.
530K is required to run it without digital sound.
Graphics: The game runs under EGA or VGA, but VGA users will be treated
to better graphics.
Sound: The game supports music and digital sound-effects on Sound Blaster
compatibles. No setup is necessary. If you run into problems, try disabling
DIGITAL SOUND under the SOUND menu, and if there are still problems,
select PC SPEAKER instead of SOUND CARD (also in the SOUND menu).
┌─────────────────────┐
──────────┤ Starting the Game ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
Start the game by typing BATS at the DOS prompt (running under Windows
is not recommended). You will see the Quick Start directions- press any key
to proceed. Then you may watch the slide-show, or speed it up by pressing
any key, or skip it by pressing ESC.
If you want to disable the slide-show from running each time you start
BATS (for example if you've already seen it), toggle the INTRO setting
under the OTHER menu (in the game).
┌─────────────────────┐
──────────┤ Using The Menus ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
Move the diamond-cursor with the up-arrow and down-arrow keys. Press
ENTER to select a choice. In some menus, your selected option is shown
in green. Disabled choices are shown in gray (for example MOUSE when
no mouse driver is loaded).
When you are in a sub-menu choose MAIN MENU or press Esc to return to
the Main Menu.
┌─────────────────────┐
──────────┤ Controls ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
You can control your ship with either the keyboard, mouse, or joystick. To
select which, use the CONTROLS menu. Default is keyboard.
If using the KEYBOARD, you can choose CONFIGURE to set-up your
favorite keys. If you don't do this, the default keys are:
Arrow Keys: Move ship (up, down, left, right)
Space Bar: Fire guns (press repeatedly, or hold for auto-fire)
P: Pause game
ESC: Abort game, return to main menu
The first time you choose Joystick, you will go to CALIBRATE automatically.
If you ever change the trim settings on your joystick, or change to another
joystick, or find that the joystick is being weird, you should CALIBRATE
again. If you lose control of the menus, delete BATS.JOY.
┌─────────────────────┐
──────────┤ Your Choices ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
You can do any of the following in this playable demo version:
Start Demo: This starts a demo that shows you six different types of
enemies and two bonus rounds. To stop it before it's done,
press ESC. Note that the auto-player is stupid in that it
never moves up or down to avoid being hit.
Play 3 Waves: This allows you to have some fun by sampling the action in
three rounds of battle.
Play Bonus: This allows you to try a Bonus Round (described below).
Players: Choose this to toggle between 1 or 2 players. (Try a two
player Demo and root for your favorite!)
Controls: Allows you to choose between keyboard, mouse, and joystick.
Music: Allows you to choose between PC Speaker and Sound Card, and
to toggle sound elements.
Hints: Reminds you of important playing hints (including some NOT
described here).
Other: Allows you to toggle the intro on and off, and see or reset
the high scores.
┌─────────────────────┐
──────────┤ Playing ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
You have three major goals:
1. Stay Alive! Use evasive maneuvers to avoid Space Bats and their weapons.
2. Eliminate Space Bats! Fire your guns with careful timing to better
protect yourself.
3. Power Up! Many Space Bats carry power-crystals with them. When you
hit such a Space Bat its power crystal will pop out. Grab it before it
weaves by. Use the key-window to see what each color crystal does.
If you are skilled enough, you can survive the entire onslaught of the
Mutant Space Bats of Doom, and become Earth's greatest hero.
┌─────────────────────┐
──────────┤ Power Crystals ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
The key to doing well in Space Bats is to catch power crystals. Each
different crystal improves your ship in a different way:
Green: Makes your shots faster.
Red: Alternately makes your shot-spread wider or enables another gun.
Blue: Makes everything except you go really slow.
White: Turns all your enabled guns into MEGA guns.
Purple: Collect six of these to gain a free ship.
When you catch a crystal, your ship will sparkle for a second. During this
time, your ship is invincible.
┌─────────────────────┐
──────────┤ The Bonus Rounds ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
Pilots like you often wish to test their shooting skills in non-combat
situations.
The skill board contains four rectangles, each highlighted with a
different color. Shoot each target orb when it is over the rectangle that
matches its color. For example, shoot the red orb when it is flying over
the red rectangle. You may receive certain bonuses depending on how well
you perform in the bonus round.
┌─────────────────────┐
──────────┤ Free Ships ├──────────────────────────────────────────
└─────────────────────┘
You get a free ship every time you reach the score shown in purple below
your current score. You also get a free ship each time you collect six
purple crystals.
