It takes you through an adult adventure in a world that could only exist in the minds of the unbalanced. Note: This game is intended for adult audiences. Parental discretion is advised. What you see on your screen is your view of this world. When you move or turn within this world, the view will change accordingly. After you play for a few minutes it will become natural to you. These functions can be assigned to different keys or buttons from the control configuration screen (F2). COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS /SB Scan for soundcard. If one is not found, the PC Speaker will be used for sound effects. This is done automatically the first time the game is run. /PC Use the PC Speaker for sound effects. /None No sound effects will be used. PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS Q1. Why doesn't the game run under Windows? A1. This program cannot be run under MicroSoft Windows because Windows doesn't like Dos programs that use Sound Cards and ModeX. Maybe MicroSoft will correct this in Windows 95, but until that time you'll have to exit Windows (totally, don't just click on the MsDos icon!) and run it from the command line. Q2. I can't hear any sound effects. Why not? A2. Within the game, hit F3 to pull up the sound controls. The and keys adjust the volume. Move the sliders all the way to the right for maximum volume. Hitting ENTER toggles the sounds on and off. Try playing with these settings. If you don't get this menu when you press F3, restart the game using the /SB or /PC command line options and then try F3 again. If you still don't get any sound, try looking at the CUMBAT.INI file. This file contains the game defaults. Make sure that the SoundSource is set to 1 (for a Sound Blaster) or 2 (for PC Speaker). If you still don't get any sound, verify that your sound card is functioning properly and that it is Sound Blaster compatible (preferablly hardware compatible, although several cards that use software emulation are know to work fine). If it is, contact our technical support at (913) 651-3201 and we will try to correct things. Q3. Whenever I start the game, it quits with a message saying: "An error occurred during initialization." What gives? A3. The solution to this depends upon the exact error message. Possible messages are: "Unable to allocate buffers. You must free up conventional memory." To correct this refer to the section on "Memory Configuration" at the end of this file. "File XXXXXX not found." The listed file was not found in the current directory. Make sure that all of the distribution files exist in the same directory as the program (see FILES.LST for an itemized list of the files). Also make sure that you are actually in the proper directory when you run the game (in other words, don't stick it in your PATH or by including its full path on the command line, use the CD command to get to the directory). If you are missing a file, you can always reinstall. "Unable to load ....." or "Error opening ...." The RDL files have probably been corrupted somehow. Try reinstalling the game. Also check that your CONFIG.SYS file has a line that says "FILES=10" or some number greater than 10. "No XMS driver installed." This game uses XMS memory. Your CONFIG.SYS must contain an XMS driver, such as HIMEM.SYS which comes with DOS or a replacement like QEMM386.SYS. See the section on "Memory Configuration" for suggested configurations. "Error allocating XMS memory." Make sure that you have at least 1 meg of XMS memory available. You can check this by typing MEM from the command line and looking at the line that says either "BYTES AVAILABLE XMS MEMORY" or "EXTENDED (XMS)". The number next to this should be at least 1000k. Q4. After I completed a level the game quit with a message saying: "An error occurred loading the next level:". What's up wit dat? A4. The solution depends upon the exact message. See the previous question for a list of messages and their respective solutions. Q5. I only see black and white. Why? A5. This game actually uses true VGA grayscale. We decided to do this for several reasons, but mainly because it looks good, especially when dealing with fleshtones. Q6. My movement is slow and jerky. How can I smooth things out? A6. There are several things you can do to improve the game's performance: 1. Reduce the viewing area. Use the '-' and '+' keys to resize the viewing area. 2. Switch to Lo-Detail mode (toggled by pressing 'D' during game play; and/or turn of the floor/ceiling tiling (toggled by pressing 'F'). 3. Turn off the sound effects. This is achieved by running the game with the /None command line parameter. 4. Free up conventional memory. Although the game will run with only 550k free, the more free memory the better. The program runs best with at least 600k free memory. Try loading things into high memory or removing drivers that aren't being used (like mouse drivers). Refer to the section "Memory Configuration" at the end of this document for more help with this. 5. Use a disk caching program for read caching. This suggestion actually might slow the program down, depending on you system's configuration. The best thing to do is try it both with and without caching and use whichever works best for you. 6. Blink your eyes as fast as possible when playing the game. The display will still be jerky, but it'll now have a cool strobe effect and you won't notice any problems. This also works for real life. 7. Buy a new VGA card, they're cheap now and getting cheaper every day. Old cards used slow memory chips. If your system can handle it, get a local bus video card. Your eyes will thank you. 8. Get a Pentium. I guarantee that it'll run smoothly. Q7. What does the game quit whenever I run it with a message like "Not enough memory"? I've got 8 megs, dangit! A7. Unfortunately, no matter how much extended memory you have, its the memory under the 1Meg line that matters, and more specifically the memory under the 640k line. If you type "MEM" from the Dos prompt it will give you the "Largest executable program size". This figure should be at least 560k. You might be able to coax the game to run with less than this if you turn of the sound support (using the /None option when you run it), but there are no guarantees. Your best bet in this situation is to remove some device drivers that you aren't using (like a mouse driver, CDRom drivers, etc). I could give you more details, but most likely you either a) already know what I am talking about and want me to shut up so that you can just get on with it already, or b) you have no clue what I just said and any simple 5 or 10 line answer that I give here would only make your head spin like a posessed little girl. If you are in group "b" I would recommend checking your Dos manual (or an equivalent, like the ever-so-popular "Dos for Dufuses"); or you can refer to the section "Memory Configuration" at the end of this document. Q8. Why doesn't my joystick work? A8. First, make sure that your joystick is plugged into port one (this is the only port on many computers, but some have two joystick ports). After you have started the game, press F2 to pull up the control configuration screen. If the joystick options at the bottom of the screen are not enabled, then the program was unable to detect a joystick. Make sure that the joystick is properly plugged in and that the cable is intact. If the joystick options are enabled, select the CALIBRATE option and follow the on screen prompts. Q9. Why don't all four buttons on my Gravis GamePad work? A9. There are two possible causes of this. First, check the control configuration screen (press F2 during game play). Make sure that the joystick option is set to GRAVIS ON and not GRAVIS OFF. Second, check that your GamePad is set to four button mode. The switch next to the cable on the GamePad should be set so that it is furthest from the point where the cable runs into the GamePad. Q10. When I adjust the background music volume nothing happens. Why? A10. You probably have either a Basic Sound Blaster or a card that is only partially compatible with the Sound Blaster (such as a Media Vision PAS). The Midi music volume is controlled through the mixer chip which is only present on the Sound Blaster Pro or above and on hardware compatible soundcards. You can always control the volume by adjusting the speaker volume. If you have a card that doesn't have a mixer chip and the sound effects are being drowned out by the background music, about all that you can do is turn off the background music by pulling down the sound menu (press F3 during gameplay) and turning off the background music (selecting Music and hitting Enter). Q11. I accidently assigned the fire key to F2 and now I can't access the control menu. How can I change it back? A11. If you get the keyboard into an unusable state (or if you do something weird to any of the options), you can just delete the file CUMBAT.INI and the game will revert to the defaults. If you are feeling adventursome, you can go in to edit the INI file, but use care as improper settings could render the game inoperable (but you can always fix it by just deleting the INI file). Q12. Why can't I move forward and sidestep at the same time? A12. There are a few multi-key operations such as this (which uses the ALT-UP-LEFT combination) which don't work on some keyboards. This usually involves ALT key combinations. The problem has been traced to certain keyboards that report incorrect key scancodes. Possible solutions are to use the other ALT key (if your keyboard has two ALT keys) or to remap Sidestep to another key from the control menu (press F2 during gameplay). Q13. How do I get questions that aren't answered by this help file answered? A13. Technical support can be reached weekdays from 9am to 5pm CST at (913) 651-3201, or you can write us at: CoreSoft 1004 2nd Avenue Leavenworth, KS 66048 Be sure to have the contents of your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, the version of DOS that you are using, any error message that was displayed and a description of your system (i.e. the CPU, sound card brand, etc.). MEMORY CONFIGURATION If you are reading this section then you probably are having problems getting the program up and running. I'm going to give you a couple of suggestions that should get you going, but there are no guarantees. As I go through this process I will try to avoid treating you like a complete idiot, but I'm also going to attempt to include enough details that an inexperienced user should be able to do it. Note: This help assumes that you are running at least DOS 5.0 and that your system has at least 2 megs of memory installed. The first thing that you need to do is back up your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files before you make any changes to them! Although you really have to work at it to physically damage your computer, messing with these files can easily render your system braindead. Backup method 1: (The ultra-safe way) 1. Place a blank disk in drive A: 2. Type FORMAT A: /S 3. After formatting completes type, COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT A: COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS A: COPY C:\COMMAND.COM A: Now if anything goes wrong, you can always stick this disk back in your A: drive and reboot the computer. Backup method 2: (The happy-go-lucky-nothing-major-will-happen way) 1. Type COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\AUTOEXEC.SAV 2. Type COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS C:\CONFIG.SAV Now if anything goes wrong, hopefully you can still get to a C:\> prompt. Then you can just copy these .SAV files back over the originals and you will be ready to rock. Now, there are several possible options for changing you system setup to allow you to play this game. You can create a boot disk, or you can create a new version of AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS that you switch to when you play this game, or (if you have DOS 6.x or above) you can set up a configuration menu. I'll go through all three options. Before I get to these, I want to mention that the configuration that I create here are all bare-bones. If you are using a special setup you might need to add one or more lines to the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files that are created. This is most common when you are using a Sound Blaster clone that requires device drivers or TSR's to achieve compatability, or if you are using a disk compression scheme. In cases such as these, refer to the manufacture's documentation for what is necessary. (Or you can cheat a little by just checking what is in your current CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. You can usually spot the needed line(s) without too much trouble.) Option 1: Floppy boot disk 1. Place a blank disk in drive A: 2. Type FORMAT A: /S 3. After formatting completes, change to the game directory Ex: C: CD \CUMBAT 4. Type COPY CONFIG.GAM B:\CONFIG.SYS Now to start the game, just reboot the computer with this floppy in drive A:. After the system is running, change to the game directory and type CUMBAT. Option 2: Config swapping 1. Change to the game directory, e.g.: C: CD \CUMBAT 2. Type COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS C:\CONFIG.SAV 3. Type COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\AUTOEXEC.SAV 4. Type COPY CONFIG.GAM C:\CONFIG.SYS 5. Type DEL AUTOEXEC.BAT 6. Reboot your computer, change to the game directory and run the game. 7. When you are done playing with the game restore your original setup: Type COPY C:\CONFIG.SAV C:\CONFIG.SYS Type COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.SAV C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT Option 3: Configuration menu This is the slickest option of all. To use this, you MUST have MS-DOS or PC-DOS version 6.0 or above. You might be able to do this with different operating systems (i.e. DR-DOS or 4DOS), but you are on your own for that. 1. Type EDIT C:\CONFIG.SYS 2. Add the following lines above EVERYTHING that is already there: [menu] MENUITEM=Standard, Standard setup MENUITEM=Games,Game setup - just HiMem MENUDEFAULT=Standard,5 [Standard] 3. Now go to the bottom of the file and add the following lines below EVERYTHING: [Games] DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS DOS=HIGH BUFFERS=30 FILES=40 SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS\ /P 4. Save CONFIG.SYS (Press Alt-F X and answer Y for YES). 5. Type EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT 6. Add the following lines above EVERYTHING: Goto %Config% rem ********************************************************************** rem The following line will jump to the end of the file if the current rem configuration is not recognized. rem ********************************************************************** Goto Exit rem ********************************************************************** rem Standard Setup rem ********************************************************************** :Standard 7. Go to the bottom of the file and add the following lines below EVERYTHING: Goto Exit rem ********************************************************************** rem Games Setup rem ********************************************************************** :Games :Exit 8. Save AUTOEXEC.BAT (Press Alt-F X and answer Y for YES). 9. Now reboot your computer. You should see a menu that looks something like this: MS-DOS 6.x Startup Menu ======================= 1. Standard setup 2. Game setup - just HiMem Enter a choice: 1 Time remaining: 05 10. Select the game menu (either use the arrow keys or press 1). Note: If you wait longer that 5 seconds the system will automatically start with the Standard setup and you will have to reboot and try again. 11. Go to the game directory and start the game. If you get any error messages about an invalid CONFIG.SYS, check to make sure that you didn't make any typos. The finished file should look just like the following, except for the lines between [Standard] and [Games] which should be identical to your CONFIG.SYS before all of this started: [menu] MENUITEM=Standard, Standard setup MENUITEM=Games,Game setup - just HiMem + Mouse MENUDEFAULT=Standard,2 [Standard] DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS BUFFERS=15,0 FILES=40 LASTDRIVE=P FCBS=4,0 DEVICEHIGH /L:1,12048 =C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE DOS=HIGH STACKS=9,256 SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS\ /p DEVICEHIGH /L:1,39488 =C:\DOS\DBLSPACE.SYS /MOVE DEVICEHIGH /L:1,11856 =C:\SB16\DRV\SBPCD.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220 [Games] DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\DBLSPACE.SYS /MOVE BUFFERS=30,0 FILES=40 DOS=HIGH SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS\ /P Secret Bonus Surprise: If you need to add other configurations, you can easily do this by adding another MENUITEM= line and the corresponding section.
