Another attempt by the Union to reach Richmond, this
time by Ambrose E. Burnside is halted at the battle
of Fredericksburg. Lincoln said when approving the
plan to reach Richmond via Fredericksburg, 'It will
succeed if you move rapidly; otherwise not'.
Burnside did not move rapidly and paid the price by
being on the receiving end of Lee's most one sided
victory in the war. Union losses were some 12,000
men, while the South lost less than half, 5,300.
A reporter with the Union army wrote: 'It can hardly
be in human nature for men to show more valor, or
generals to manifest less judgement.'
