The Union Army of the Cumberland, some 57,000 men,
led by Major-General William S. Rosecrans do battle
at Chickamauga with the Army of Tennessee, led by
General Braxton Bragg.
After two days of heavy fighting, the North lost
16,000 men - the South 18,000, the Union were
defeated and fell back to the fortifications of
Chattanooga. Bragg was subsequently criticised for
not pursing the retreating Northeners.
