AUGUST 29 1862
The Union commander John Pope angered by Jackson's
capture of his supply depot at Manassas and
convinced that Jackson was isolated decided to
mount an attack. The Second Manassas (or Bull Run)
was the result.
Pope attacked but was held off by Jackson.
Confederate reinforcements arrived in the shape of
Longstreet and positioned themselves to overlap the
North's exposed left. Pope did not realize what was
happening and thought the Confederate's were
retreating! A grave error, Pope's 'pursuit' was
repulsed and Longstreet siezed the opportunity and
attacked Pope's left flank. Only a valiant stand
by the Army of Virginia enabled the North to fall
back across Bull Run toward Washington.
