JULY 1 1863
Gettysburg begins. Robert E. Lee decides to cross
into the North and fight one great decisive battle
with the Union, a battle that Lee's 'Invincible's'
would surely win!
The Union army was commanded by Major-General George
G. Meade with a force of around 85,500. Lee's
strength numbered approximately 75,000.
The armies met by chance at Gettysburg as some of
Lee's army had gone there seeking shoes. A Union
patrol was met and word was passed back to their
respective commanders. The main battle commenced
on July 1 with a Confederate attack. After three
days fierce fighting the total number of casualties
numbered over 45,000, and victory went to the North.
The South would never mount such an offensive again.
