JUNE 25 1862
Early on in the war the North decided that the
capture of Richmond, Virginia, would strike a major
blow. To this end the North launched a drive
towards the Confederate seat of government which
resulted in a series of battles which came to be
known as the Seven Days.
George B. McClellan led the campaign for the North
but was thwarted by the South's commander Robert E.
Lee so strongly that the Union Army fell back towards
Washington over 100 miles away.
