MAY 5 1864
The first of the great clashes between Grant and Lee
takes place in the Wilderness, a harsh terrain full
of dense undergrowth where visibility was frequently
less than 100 yards.
Grant wished to push the Confederate's out of their
defensive positions. To do this the Union tried to
move through the Wilderness and pass Lee on his flank
forcing him out to defend Richmond. However things
did not go as planned and the North lost some 17,000
men compared to the South's 5,000. However Grant did
not retreat but pushed on.
