Union troops commanded by General Benjamin Butler
occupy New Orleans.
The occupation lasted until the end of the war,
however it did not pass without incident and the
South hated 'Spoons' Butler for his heavy-handed
conduct in New Orleans. He was nicknamed 'Spoons'
as it was said that while attending a dinner at the
home of a prominent local family he made off with
some of the silver!
