APRIL 6 1862
Grant successfully repulses the Confederate attack at
Shiloh.
Major-General Ulysses S. Grant commanded a Union force
of around 49,000 men against a Southern army of
around 36,000 commanded by General Albert Sidney
Johnston, who died during the battle. Johnston was the
highest ranking officer killed in battle during the
war.
Having held off the Confederate attacks, Grant was
rewarded with an additional 18,000 men which arrived
at night on the 6th. This meant that the North now had
an advantage of some 20,000 men over the South, so at
dawn on the 7th the Union army pushed forward.
The Confederates found themselves being pushed back
and eventually during the afternoon decided to
retreat. Shiloh was one of the most bloody battles in
the war with estimated losses of 10,700 Confederate
and 13,000 Union.
