HOYLE CLASSIC CARD GAMES (DOS VERSION)
Hoyle Classic must be installed on a hard drive with
at least 9 Meg free (or 3 Meg without audio). To do this,
type "install" from the floppy drive's prompt. Thus, if
your floppy drive is on a:, insert the diskette into a:
and type a: (then press enter), then type install (and
press enter).
Minimum system requirements:
1) 286 CPU running at 16MHz.
2) EGA graphics card.
3) 570K (583,680 free bytes) DOS memory (without DAC).
4) Internal Speaker.
Note: Performance will not be optimal on a minimum
system. Symptoms of overtaxed hardware include slow
animation and/or breakups in audio. If slow animation is
a problem, be sure to turn the Detail Level all the way
down once you are in the game. This will eliminate
unnecessary animation.
System configuration for optimal performance:
1) 386/486 CPU running at 25MHz or better.
2) Over 600K (614,400 bytes) of DOS memory.
3) 1 Meg or more extended or expanded memory.
4) 256 color VGA video.
5) A music card
6) A DAC for sampled audio.
DAC Note: If you do not have a DAC you may (if you wish)
delete the file "resource.aud". This file contains all of
the speech for the game and is quite large (over 3 Meg).
By deleting this file, you will free up over 3 Meg of your
valuable hard drive space. If, after deleting this file,
you acquire a DAC and wish to hear the audio, you will
need to reinstall Hoyle Classic.
After installation, you may begin the game by typing
"hoyle" at the DOS prompt in the directory where you
installed the program.
Another Note: Occasionally you may get an error message
which says "out of handles". If you experience this error
regularly and you have the option to use XMS memory turned
on, you may wish to reinstall Hoyle with this option off.
This will usually solve the problem.
Error: On Pages 3 and 4 of the Hoyle Doco there is mention
of a "Speed Slider". The Speed Slider was removed from
Hoyle Classic since it was of little use. Even on today's
fastest PC's there was little reason to slow down the
speed. If you find that you can't live without a speed
adjustment, you may edit the file "game.opt" (after the
game has created it). Change ONLY the 2nd from last digit
in the file. 0 is fastest, 9 is slowest.
