- PRODUCTION / ANIMATION VENDORS
-
-
- The category PRODUCTION / ANIMATION VENDORS includes
- those organizations involved in the development of computer
- graphics and animation for television features, film effects,
- videos, commercials, interactive media, 3-D databases and
- simulator ride visuals.
-
- The computer graphics production industry landscape is littered
- with corpses. Companies like the mighty Digital Productions
- (which used a CRAY-XMP super- computer to render its
- animation) have come and gone like the wind. Small one per-
- son / one system animation botiques fight for low budget work
- (so they can keep their equipment payments up).
-
- The industry was very fickle in its initial acceptance of computer
- animation. Feature films like TRON were a tremendous creative
- challenge but were box office flops that soured the entertainment
- community on the need for computer graphics. With the cost of
- systems and software declining, the use of CG has become
- viable and standard issue as new techniques and novel effects
- are developed. Cost effective use of CG in a wide variety of
- commercials and features is now happening all around us.
- Computer Graphics has finally come of age!
-
- Today, several large and successful CG animation production
- houses are thriving, as long as they don't try to expand too
- suddenly. Many have taken notice of the new excitement
- brewing in VR and appreciate how their role as software,
- database and CG animation suppliers could be a source of
- important creativity to this emerging market. Motion-base
- platform rides (for theme parks) have already been making use of
- CG houses in the development of their motion synchronized film
- features and visual effects requirements. Work in this unique are
- is escalating steadily.
-
- As location based entertainment development firms create more
- exciting and chal- lenging simulation rides, CG houses will look
- to supply their visually stunning imag- ery, and dynamic point-of-
- view changes synchronized to motion cues.
-
- What remains to be seen, however, is how will the CGI houses
- fare when their customers progressively adopt to higher-
- performance real-time computer image generation hardware to
- create their dynamic imagery? Will they buy these super-charged
- engines and program them for their clients or will the hardware
- suppliers, who have a strong base of database development skills
- ( and teams to build them) compete for a total project (without
- having to farm out much of the work to the CG houses). Will the
- CG houses continue to upgrade to the higher priced real-time
- hard-ware that their clients will be using or will the client
- insist that their hardware supplier make their image generator
- available early to their animation subcontractors?
-
- If you or your organization is planning a VR related project,
- simulation ride or inter- active entertainment venue or product
- where you will be supplying a significant amount of computer
- generated animation and/or databases and you feel that you
- should be listed in this category, please send along information
- so your material can be included in further guide revisions.
