  31. 1) General Information
  32. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  33.    Welcome to my new series of synthesizer utilities. The Dumpmen™. 
  34.    Dumpman K4 is the first one out, and is a Sys-Ex dump handler for 
  35.    the Kawai K4/K4r models. Dumpman K4 lets you send, save, load and 
  36.    request almost anything with your Kawai K4.
  37.  
  38.    It does the same thing as all other MIDI dump handlers out there, 
  39.    but this one is specialized and optimized for the only K4. In other 
  40.    words, it takes only the memory that's needed.
  41.  
  42.    I hope you enjoy it. Check out the PROGRAMS.TXT file. It's a list 
  43.    of other programs I have written.

  58. 2) Shareware

  60.    Yes, it's true. Dumpman K4 _IS_ shareware. Please send U$10 in cash
  61.    along with a disk, and I'll send you the registered version. I have
  62.    been programming, testing, smurfing, and debugging this program 
  63.    for a very long time now. So I would be very grateful if you would 
  64.    contribute this little donation. All of the money I receive will go 
  65.    to registration fees for OTHER shareware products. So your money 
  66.    will not just help me, but other shareware programmers as well.

  68.    Please show that shareware works. What's U$10 to you, compared to 
  69.    the months of spare time I've put into this program?

  71.    NOTE!!! When I first created the program, I created it together 
  72.    with a key program. But I decided not to use that part in my 
  73.    program, as it would take up A LOT of important memory. So... when 
  74.    you register the program, I will PERSONALLY compile a version 
  75.    registered only for you! This will also ensure that you always have 
  76.    the latest version.

  100. 3) The Main Screen
  101. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  102.    This is where you work. It's here Dumpman will provide you with 
  103.    information about the dump. What KIND of dump. WHERE the dump came 
  104.    from. And all NAMES in the dump - of course.
  105.    
  106.    When you have an ALL dump in memory, you will notice the buttons 
  107.    at the upper right. If you press the M-button, the main page will
  108.    show you the names of all the multis, and if you press S, well... 
  109.    then you'll see all the singles. Easy enough.

  112. 4) Loading Sys-Ex
  113. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  114.    Dumpman only supports clean Sys-Ex files, not the ones with the 
  115.    Steinberg header (ones dumped with Satellite). With K4_CNVRTER.PRG, 
  116.    you can convert these (and other formats) into clean Sys-Ex.

  119. 5) Saving Sys-Ex
  120. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  121.    It does exactly what you think it will. It saves the dump to disk 
  122.    or harddisk. If there's no room left on the disk, it will let you 
  123.    know.

  126. 6) Transmit
  127. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  128.    This will send your dump to your K4. Your synthesizer will receive 
  129.    it, IF it's indicated as ON and connected.

  132. 7) Request
  133. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  134.    This function will request a selected dump. When you press the 
  135.    Request-button Dumpman will ask you what kind of dump you want from 
  136.    your K4.

  138.    IMPORTANT! You must do a full connection between the Atari and the 
  139.    synthesizer. Im other words : MIDI OUT (Atari) -> MIDI IN (K4), and 
  140.    MIDI IN (Atari) -> MIDI OUT (K4). It's that easy!

  142.    If you don't have a full connection, you could try sending the dump 
  143.    by hand (indicated as from the synthesizer). I can't promise it
  144.    will work, but _it should_. But in that case you MUST have MIDI IN 
  145.    (Atari) -> MIDI OUT (K4) connection.

  147.    You might also note that you can't request a single patch or a 
  148.    multi patch. Well... I didn't add that option, because I don't 
  149.    think that's especially useful. If you have a different opinion, 
  150.    let me know!

  152.    WARNING! If you have an EXTERNAL dump (from a card) you can ONLY 
  153.    dump it back to a card. The dump will be ignored by the K4 if there 
  154.    is no card in the slot.

  160.    the registered owner of the copy, and where you can contact me.

  163. 9) Program/Accessory modes
  164. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  165.    The program works both as an accessory  (ACC),  and as a program 
  166.    (PRG). Just change the extension. The RSC-file must be in the same 
  167.    directory as the program/accessory.

  170. 10)Install application
  171. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  172.    You can install Dumpman K4 to automagically load a file, just by
  173.    clicking on it.
  174.    
  175.    Just click on DUMPMNK4.PRG (this option only works in program mode), 
  176.    goto the Install application option in your desktop, and enter the 
  177.    extension you use on your Kawai K4 Sys-Ex files (SYS, SYX or 
  178.    whatever you use), then save the desktop.

  180.    Now, when you double-click on any file with the extension you 
  181.    selected, Dumpman K4 will run, and automagically load the file you 
  182.    clicked on.

  184.    If you run NeoDesk, you could also drag the Sys-Ex file to the 
  185.    Dumpman icon.

  188. 11)Test equipment and programs
  189. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  190.    It has been tested on following models :
  191.  
  192.    STFM (TOS 1.02/1MB),
  193.    STE  (TOS 1.062/2.5MB),
  194.    Mega ST (TOS 2.06/4MB),
  195.    TT (TOS 3.06/20MB with or without Fast-RAM),
  196.    Falcon030 (TOS 4.02/14MB).

  199. 12)Known bugs / restrictions
  200. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  201.    Dumpman will only work in 640x400 pixels or more. If enough people 
  202.    want a 640x200 pixel version I _could_ maybe arrange that.
  203.  
  204.    If, for example, you have 4 windows open on the desktop and you 
  205.    open Dumpman as an accessory, some fragments of the dialogs MIGHT 
  206.    stay in the windows for a while.  When you exit, everything will 
  207.    be normal again. I don't see this as any serious problem, and for 
  208.    the moment I'll devote my energy to deal with more pressing needs.

  210.    You might notice the boxes will update VERY slow when running 
  211.    another program in the background (such as Cubase).  Please try 
  212.    to avoid entering the menubar while the boxes are updating. This 
  213.    COULD lead to problems (not serious problems, but anyway...). 
  214.    One way to avoid this is to get NVDI. It's probably the best 
  215.    screen accelerator available. It's also recommended by Steinberg 
  216.    themselves.

  218.    NOTE!   I won't take ANY responsibility if my program causes 
  219.    your system to crash, and important material disappears. It 
  220.    shouldn't happen, as the program has been tested very carefully 
  221.    by several good beta-testers, and they all report that the 
  222.    program behaves well in terms of releasing memory and usage of
  223.    GEM.

  225.    The program uses the FormDo routine, so it will not multitask in 
  226.    MultiTOS/Mag!x/Geneva, BUT IT WILL if you use MultiDialog. It works 
  227.    very well. I ran it together with Geneva, NeoDesk, STalker, and
  228.    Everest.

  230.    WARNING! Dumpman K4 will have SERIOUS problems, when using the
  231.    screen-saver NITE. NITE does something with the MIDI buffer that
  232.    destroys the current dump.

  235. 13)About Patch Tools K4...
  236. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  237.    You might have found the file PTOOLSK4.SYS, and you even might have 
  238.    checked it out. It's a Sys-Ex bank for your K4 with new patches 
  239.    created with Patch Tools K4. Patch Tools K4 is, not an editor as 
  240.    you might think, but a patch creator. You can easy create bank 
  241.    after bank with _completely_ new patches. Patch Tools is shareware, 
  242.    and you can order a registered version of it now.
