1) General Information
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to my new series of synthesizer utilities. The Dumpmen™.
Dumpman K4 is the first one out, and is a Sys-Ex dump handler for
the Kawai K4/K4r models. Dumpman K4 lets you send, save, load and
request almost anything with your Kawai K4.
It does the same thing as all other MIDI dump handlers out there,
but this one is specialized and optimized for the only K4. In other
words, it takes only the memory that's needed.
I hope you enjoy it. Check out the PROGRAMS.TXT file. It's a list
of other programs I have written.
Following files should be included in the distribution file :
DUMPMNK4.PRG... The program.
DUMPMNK4.RSC... The Resource file.
DUMPMNK4.TXT... This ASCII text.
DUMPMNK4.HYP... The manual in ST-Guide format.
DUMPMNK4.NIC... NeoDesk icon for Dumpman K4.
VERSIONS.TXT... Description about all versions/bugfixes.
PROGRAMS.TXT... Information about other programs I've written.
PTOOLSK4.SYS... Sys-Ex file with patches created with Patch Tools!
Read chapter 13 for more information.
2) Shareware
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, it's true. Dumpman K4 _IS_ shareware. Please send U$10 in cash
along with a disk, and I'll send you the registered version. I have
been programming, testing, smurfing, and debugging this program
for a very long time now. So I would be very grateful if you would
contribute this little donation. All of the money I receive will go
to registration fees for OTHER shareware products. So your money
will not just help me, but other shareware programmers as well.
Please show that shareware works. What's U$10 to you, compared to
the months of spare time I've put into this program?
NOTE!!! When I first created the program, I created it together
with a key program. But I decided not to use that part in my
program, as it would take up A LOT of important memory. So... when
you register the program, I will PERSONALLY compile a version
registered only for you! This will also ensure that you always have
the latest version.
When you register, you will get :
o The latest version of Dumpman - K4, registered in your name.
o K4 Converter. Will convert other bank formats into Sys-Ex format.
When you register, please let me know your set-up, including all
MIDI-related stuff, and where you found the program. And of course
your name, address and your email-address (if you have one).
NOTE! North American users should send their shareware
contributions to ATARI UNITED! SoftWareHouse. Their address is
below.
This is version 1.04

3) The Main Screen
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is where you work. It's here Dumpman will provide you with
information about the dump. What KIND of dump. WHERE the dump came
from. And all NAMES in the dump - of course.
When you have an ALL dump in memory, you will notice the buttons
at the upper right. If you press the M-button, the main page will
show you the names of all the multis, and if you press S, well...
then you'll see all the singles. Easy enough.
4) Loading Sys-Ex
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dumpman only supports clean Sys-Ex files, not the ones with the
Steinberg header (ones dumped with Satellite). With K4_CNVRTER.PRG,
you can convert these (and other formats) into clean Sys-Ex.
5) Saving Sys-Ex
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It does exactly what you think it will. It saves the dump to disk
or harddisk. If there's no room left on the disk, it will let you
know.
6) Transmit
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This will send your dump to your K4. Your synthesizer will receive
it, IF it's indicated as ON and connected.
7) Request
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This function will request a selected dump. When you press the
Request-button Dumpman will ask you what kind of dump you want from
your K4.
IMPORTANT! You must do a full connection between the Atari and the
synthesizer. Im other words : MIDI OUT (Atari) -> MIDI IN (K4), and
MIDI IN (Atari) -> MIDI OUT (K4). It's that easy!
If you don't have a full connection, you could try sending the dump
by hand (indicated as from the synthesizer). I can't promise it
will work, but _it should_. But in that case you MUST have MIDI IN
(Atari) -> MIDI OUT (K4) connection.
You might also note that you can't request a single patch or a
multi patch. Well... I didn't add that option, because I don't
think that's especially useful. If you have a different opinion,
let me know!
WARNING! If you have an EXTERNAL dump (from a card) you can ONLY
dump it back to a card. The dump will be ignored by the K4 if there
is no card in the slot.
8) Info
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Guess. It will provide you with info about : The version number,
the registered owner of the copy, and where you can contact me.
9) Program/Accessory modes
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The program works both as an accessory (ACC), and as a program
(PRG). Just change the extension. The RSC-file must be in the same
directory as the program/accessory.
10)Install application
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You can install Dumpman K4 to automagically load a file, just by
clicking on it.
Just click on DUMPMNK4.PRG (this option only works in program mode),
goto the Install application option in your desktop, and enter the
extension you use on your Kawai K4 Sys-Ex files (SYS, SYX or
whatever you use), then save the desktop.
Now, when you double-click on any file with the extension you
selected, Dumpman K4 will run, and automagically load the file you
clicked on.
If you run NeoDesk, you could also drag the Sys-Ex file to the
Dumpman icon.
11)Test equipment and programs
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It has been tested on following models :
STFM (TOS 1.02/1MB),
STE (TOS 1.062/2.5MB),
Mega ST (TOS 2.06/4MB),
TT (TOS 3.06/20MB with or without Fast-RAM),
Falcon030 (TOS 4.02/14MB).
12)Known bugs / restrictions
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dumpman will only work in 640x400 pixels or more. If enough people
want a 640x200 pixel version I _could_ maybe arrange that.
If, for example, you have 4 windows open on the desktop and you
open Dumpman as an accessory, some fragments of the dialogs MIGHT
stay in the windows for a while. When you exit, everything will
be normal again. I don't see this as any serious problem, and for
the moment I'll devote my energy to deal with more pressing needs.
You might notice the boxes will update VERY slow when running
another program in the background (such as Cubase). Please try
to avoid entering the menubar while the boxes are updating. This
COULD lead to problems (not serious problems, but anyway...).
One way to avoid this is to get NVDI. It's probably the best
screen accelerator available. It's also recommended by Steinberg
themselves.
NOTE! I won't take ANY responsibility if my program causes
your system to crash, and important material disappears. It
shouldn't happen, as the program has been tested very carefully
by several good beta-testers, and they all report that the
program behaves well in terms of releasing memory and usage of
GEM.
The program uses the FormDo routine, so it will not multitask in
MultiTOS/Mag!x/Geneva, BUT IT WILL if you use MultiDialog. It works
very well. I ran it together with Geneva, NeoDesk, STalker, and
Everest.
WARNING! Dumpman K4 will have SERIOUS problems, when using the
screen-saver NITE. NITE does something with the MIDI buffer that
destroys the current dump.
13)About Patch Tools K4...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You might have found the file PTOOLSK4.SYS, and you even might have
checked it out. It's a Sys-Ex bank for your K4 with new patches
created with Patch Tools K4. Patch Tools K4 is, not an editor as
you might think, but a patch creator. You can easy create bank
after bank with _completely_ new patches. Patch Tools is shareware,
and you can order a registered version of it now.
Please send $25 to me, and I'll send you :
o The latest, registered version of Patch Tools K4
o Two banks with total 128 new patches for your K4.
o A registered version of Dumpman K4 free.
o A registered version of K4 Converter.
