1. CURSOR COMMANDS

Up-arrow Moves the cursor up one line
Down-arrow Moves the cursor down one line
Left-arrow Moves the cursor left one space

Clr/Home Moves the cursor to the top of the screen

The cursor can be placed directly on any part of the current screen of text, by clicking on the desired character.
The vertical scroll bar can be used in the normal way, to move to different parts of the text.
2. EDITING COMMANDS

Insert Toggles between Insert and Overstrike modes
Caps Lock Toggles between Caps Lock on and Caps Lock off
Delete Deletes the character under the cursor
Backspace Deletes the character to the left of the cursor

<Control> Undo Restores a line deleted with <Control> Delete
Undo Restores any changes made to the current paragraph

3. BLOCK OPERATIONS

<Control> B Marks the start or end of a block
<Control> C Copies the block to the clipboard
<Control> T Copies the block to the clipboard then deletes the block
<Control> A Appends the block to any text already in the clipboard
<Control> P Pastes the clipboard into the text at the cursor position
<Control> D Inserts a duplicate of the block at the cursor position
<Control> M Moves the block to the cursor position
<Control> R Erases the block from memory
<Control> U Unmarks the block
<Control> E Empties (deletes) the current clipboard
<Control> X Empties all clipboards
<Control> L Select clipboard and enter description
<Control> F-key Makes the corresponding clipboard current
Blocks can also be marked by holding down the left mouse button while dragging the pointer over the desired area of text.
Marked blocks can be Duplicated, Moved, etc. into a different document in memory. The contents of the clipboards are preserved when changing documents.
4. SEARCH AND REPLACE

<Control> H Displays the Search/Replace dialog box
<Control> F Finds the next instance of a previously defined search phrase
The Search/Replace dialog box is filled in as follows. The term 'Radio' button refers to a group of buttons in a dialog box, only one of which can be highlighted at a time:-
Search text - Type the phrase to be searched for and/or replaced
Replacement text - Type the replacement phrase, or leave blank if only
searching
Find/Replace?/Replace all ('Radio' buttons):-
Find - Click on this button to search only
Replace? - Click on this button if you want to confirm each
replacement separately
Replace all - Click on this button to replace all examples of the
search phrase automatically
Case insensitive/Case sensitive ('Radio' buttons):-
Case insensitive - Click on this button if you do not want the search to
make a distinction between capitals and lower case
letters
Case sensitive - Click on this button if you want the search to make an
exact match of capitals and lower case letters
Search from start/Search from cursor ('Radio' buttons):-
Click on the appropriate button, to determine where the
search should start.
5. FILE OPERATIONS
------------------
<Alternate> L Loads a text file from disk. The routine automatically
detects if the file is in the special SCRIBE format
<Alternate> M Merges (inserts) a text file into the current document at
the cursor position
<Alternate> O Loads a set of clipboards
<Alternate> S Saves the current document in SCRIBE format (this preserves
page break markers and headers/footers for printing)
<Alternate> A Saves the current document in ASCII format. A dialog box is
displayed, asking if you want a carriage return/line feed
combination after every line
<Alternate> C Saves the contents of the current clipboard in ASCII format.
As above you are given the choice of having a CR/LF
combination after every line, or not.
<Alternate> K Saves all clipboards and text descriptions in special format
<Alternate> F Provides a simple floppy disk formatting facility
<Alternate> Q Exits from SCRIBE to the desktop.
6. PRINTING FUNCTIONS
---------------------
These functions are to be found under the 'Print' drop-down menu.
<Alternate> T: Printed page layout - A dialog box is displayed, in which you can set the page size, margins, etc. for hardcopy printing. The values can be changed by clicking on the up or down arrow symbols, or by typing numbers directly into the boxes. The meanings of the items are:-
Paper length - The total printable length of the sheet in lines
Top margin - The number of blank lines at the top of the sheet
Bottom margin - The number of blank lines at the bottom of the sheet
Lines per page - The number of actual lines of text per page (calculated from the above 3 values)
Left margin - The number of character spaces from the left of the sheet
to the left edge of the text
Right margin - The number of character spaces from the left of the sheet
to the right edge of the text
Click on 'OK' to use the new values, or 'Cancel' to restore the previous values. To make the changes permanent, go to the 'User preferences' dialog and click on 'Save & Use'.
<Alternate> H: Headers and footers - A dialog box is displayed, in which you type the header and/or footer text, and say if you want these to be printed on the first page. A '#' character is interpreted as the current page number.
<Alternate> I: Insert page breaks - Follow the on-screen prompts. The window information line informs you what key presses can be used.
<Alternate> G: Single page break - This inserts a single page break marker at the start of the current paragraph.
<Alternate> P: Print document - The entire current document is printed.
<Alternate> B: Print block - The currently marked block is printed.
7. MISCELLANEOUS FUNCTIONS
--------------------------
These functions are found under the 'Utilities' drop-down menu.
<Alternate> U: User preferences - A dialog box is displayed, in which various features of SCRIBE can be changed by clicking on the appropriate button, as follows:-
Undo changes: The default is 'Yes', and the 'Undo' facility is enabled. If memory is tight, you can release an additional 10,000 bytes by clicking on 'No'.
Online help: The default is 'Yes', and on-line help is enabled. If memory is tight, you can release an additional 10,000 bytes by clicking on 'No'.
Warnings: The default is 'Yes' and in this state warnings are displayed before any potentially destructive commands are actioned. If you find these warnings tedious, they can be disabled by clicking on 'No'.
Paragraph mark: The default is 'Yes', and the arrow symbol is displayed at the end of paragraphs. If you prefer not to have this symbol displayed, click on 'No'.
Cursor: The default cursor is a solid block. An alternative vertical line cursor can be substituted by clicking on 'Line'.
Clipboard: Click on 'Auto' or 'Manual' for your chosen clipboard copying mode.
Release memory: Enter the number of kilobytes of memory to be left unused by SCRIBE.
Click on 'Save & Use' to make the changes permanent, 'Use' to use them only during the current session, or 'Cancel' to restore the previous settings.
<Alternate> R: Reset paragraphs. Unwanted paragraph end markers are deleted from the current document (use this facility with documents previously saved with CR/LF at the end of every line).
<Alternate> N: Add carriage returns. Converts documents having LF-only paragraph endings to CR plus LF.
<Alternate> E: Remove carriage returns. Converts documents having CR plus LF paragraph endings to LF-only.
<Alternate> V: Show ASCII value. The ASCII value of the character under the cursor is displayed.
<Alternate> D: List documents - A list of the documents in memory is displayed, with their size in bytes, and an indication of the amount of free memory.
