PAGESTREAM 2, THE ULTIMATE LABEL MAKER
HP_5164.MAC
Macro Set for use with Avery #5164 (3 1/3" x 4" Labels)
Macros by

GEnie Lamp ST Columnist: Read It!
Hot off the press! Avery laser labels were made to be used with the
flexibility of PageStream 2.
One button, function key controls allow you to:
FUNCTION KEY NUMBERS INDICATED IN PARENTHESES "(F1)"
* Generate a MASTER LABEL either with tight tolerances to the die-cut
(F1), or with 1/8" clearance on all sides (F9). (Tight tolerance
optimized for printing width of the HP DeskJet printer.)
* duplicate the MASTER LABEL, including any placed graphics, to all 6
labels available per sheet, even without prior grouping. (F10)
* duplicate master, or any label (or any element thereof) _once_
to the right (F2), left (F4), down (F3), or up (F5) to the next row
or column of labels.
* duplicate any single TOP row label, or element thereof, three up,
vertically (F7).
* duplicate any single BOTTOM row label, or element thereof, three up,
vertically (F8).
...and it is all a lot simpler than it sounds!
Macros are a convenient way to simplify repetitive tasks within a
program. PageStream allows for very powerful and useful macros, and
Avery Laser labels make for a good exercise for macro useage.
Here's how it works:
1. Run PageStream, create a new document (portrait). Measuring system
should be INCHES.
2. Load HP_5164.MAC into the Set/Save Macros dialog box.
3. Using the text column tool, create ONE column of ANY size, ANY
place on the page. You're now ready to make the MASTER LABEL:
4. Using the object tool (Arrow), select the column and hit F1.
The master label column is created. Alternately, use F9 to size the text
column with a 1/8 inch clearance on all sides. This can help adjust for
slight printer positioning problems, as well as to keep the text away
from the die cut.
5. Add text, file names, designs, graphics, as you wish:
6. Press F10 if you want to duplicate the finished MASTER label to the
entire page (6 identical labels).
7. Group the master label, or select one of its elements, and use F2
to duplicate it once to the right;
or, use F3 to duplicate it once DOWN to the label below the current
one,
or, use F4 to duplicate a label, or any segment thereof, one label to
the LEFT.
If the label is one of the TOP TWO, you can select it or any part of
it, and duplicate it three-up VERTICALLY with F7. (duping downward)
If the label is one of the BOTTOM TWO, you can select it or any part
of it, and duplicate it three-up VERTICALLY with F8. (duping upward)
Remember, use your own ingenuity to get the most out of these macros. The
duplication functions can precisely place a graphic you've place on one
label to any or all of the others. In the same vein, whole labels can be
duplicated. The key lies in what object or objects are selected at the time
of macro execution.
I suggest starting out by using square cornered boxes rather than text
columns (for better visibility), and play with the macros to get a feel for
how they work. A certain logic was used to make the function keys user
friendly. Hopefully you'll find it functional.
Finally, consider that you're utilizing one of the premier desktop
publishing environments in the world for the mundane task of Avery label
creation. These macros will afford you the speed and versatility, and
PageStream will afford you the font and graphics (color too!) power to put
all other label-making programs to shame.
ONCE AGAIN, THE MACRO LIST - AVERY 5164.MAC
F1: Size and position any text column to create MASTER label.
F2: Dupe label or graphic object 1 label to the RIGHT.
F3: Dupe label or graphic object 1 label DOWN.
F4: Dupe label or graphic object 1 label to the LEFT.
F5: Dupe label or graphic object 1 label UP.
F6: Duplicate entire label (IF GROUPED), or any portion or graphic element
thereof (IF SELECTED BY ITSELF), to entire page (all labels).
F7: Duplicate entire TOP ROW label (IF GROUPED), or any portion or graphic
element thereof (IF SELECTED BY ITSELF), VERTICALLY DOWNWARD to the
three labels in the column.
F8: Duplicate entire BOTTOM ROW label (IF GROUPED), or any portion or
graphic element thereof (IF SELECTED BY ITSELF), VERTICALLY UPWARD to
the three labels in the column.
F9: Size and position column for MASTER LABEL with 1/8 inch additional
clearance on all sides. (An alternate to F1.)
F10: "SHOTGUN" duplication of MASTER LABEL, complete with all graphics and
text, to ALL LABELS ON PAGE. This macro does not require prior
grouping of the various objects within the MASTER LABEL. It requires
only that you be in OBJECT MODE and on a page containing ONLY the
top left MASTER LABEL.
EXPERIMENT, THINK CREATIVELY, AND LABEL TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT.
** CAVEAT **
Every printer has its "fingerprint", meaning no two printers, even of
the same make and model, will print EXACTLY the same way, even with the
same document. A certain amount of fluctuation is possible. As the 5164
macros have worked out, on my system they print fine to the DeskJet, but
they show an offset on my NEC LC890.
You may need to establish an offset for your particular printer. As the
macros are all variations of the EDIT COORDINATES and DUPLICATE
commands within PageStream, you should be able to figure out (by
selecting an object and writing down the right, top, left, and bottom
inch coordinates from the EDIT COORDINATES dialog) which coordinate to
change within the macros. (I'm working on NUDGE macros as a general fix for
this phenomenon.)
Remember to save the changed macros for later use on your system!
