STeno Changes for 1.03
======================
This file describes the changes to STeno that were made in version 1.03 and
therefore do not appear in the user's manual. Please read this file
carefully before calling or sending e-mail since it will hopefully answer
most of your questions and therefore save us both some time.
As you can see from the version number designation this is *not*
considered to be a major upgrade to STeno. This means that a patch
program is available which will automatically update a version 1.00 STeno
to version 1.03. A disk swap update is also possible by sending your
*original* STalker/STeno disk (keep a backup!) to Strata Software along
with $5 to cover the handling and return shipping costs. As this is a
minor update, registered owners will not be getting a mail notification, so
if you know someone who has STalker/STeno and might not know about the
update please pass the word. Obviously you don't need an update since
you're reading this file now. As always you can call Strata Software at
any time to ask questions or find out what the latest versions are.
That being said, I think you'll find that a fair number of improvements
have been added in this 'minor upgrade'. Each of these is dealt with in
detail below. Don't forget to read the CHANGES.101 file also - it lists
the changes to STeno made in version 1.01.
o The "Save Selection..." command was displaying the original file name
in the progress display box rather than the file name selected. It
was stored correctly but was disconcerting nonetheless. This has been
fixed and the correct name is now shown.
o Speaking of the progress display box, it is now centered over STeno's
window. This was requested by an Atari software engineer who shall
remain nameless (but who likes to wear black socks and dress shoes
with shorts - yuck!). If you've got a couple of STenos running,
especially on a Moniterm, this is more visually appropriate since the
box appears over the window of the STeno actually doing the load/save.
STeno Changes for 1.02
======================
o STeno 1.02 can be used as a "NeoDesk Accessory", and installed on the
NeoDesktop as an icon. Simply add a line containing "STENO" (no
quotes) to the NEO_ACC.INF file in the same folder as NEOMASTR.PRG. If
you don't have a NEO_ACC.INF file then you can use STeno to create one.
The next time you run NeoDesk you'll be able to drag a copy of STeno's
icon onto the desktop and leave it there. Double-clicking on the STeno
icon will open STeno's window. Dragging a file over the icon will
cause STeno to open the file just as if "Open..." had been selected.
Dragging the printer icon over STeno's icon will cause STeno to print
the file (the same as the Print command), and dragging the Trashcan
icon over STeno's icon will cause STeno to erase the current file from
its buffer (the same as the New command). See the documentation
included with the freeware recoverable trashcan NeoDesk accessory from
Gribnif for more information on NeoDesk accessories.
o The menu bar drop downs inside the STeno window are faster than
before, and do their best to stay visible no matter where the STeno
window is on the screen. They'll either drop above or below the menu
bar depending on which option displays more of the menu. They'll also
display in such a way that they're never off the right-hand side of
the screen.
o There are some new Preferences settings and the font choices have been
moved to the Preferences dialog.
The "Drive to use for clipboard" setting is the same as before, but
STeno will no longer scan the available drives to find the highest one
if the profiled drive is not present. It will simply check the
configured value and use the current default drive if it doesn't exist.
The font size is now specified in points, making it more portable
between resolutions and more meaningful than Tiny/Medium/Large. This
also gives you 6 choices rather than 3 since the double high & wide
versions of each system font can be used, although the display is
noticeably slower. In monochrome the 6x6 font is 8 point; the 8x8
font is 9 point; and the 8x16 font is 10 point. 16 point gives you a
12x12 font; 18 point gives you a 16x16 font; and 20 point gives you a
16x32 font. The latter is great on a Moniterm monitor since it gives
you just about the same number of characters vertically and
horizontally as you get on an SM124 with the 8x16 system font. You
can read the text from across a room!
You can specify the name of the STalker accessory you wish STeno to
communicate with. Simply enter the filename without the .ACC or .PRG
extension. You would normally leave this as "STALKER" unless you will
be loading multiple STalker/STeno combinations.
You can specify the text you wish STeno to use as the accessory and
window title prefix. Again, this is mainly of interest if you'll be
loading multiple STenos, but you could also make it shorter or leave
it blank if you wanted to see the complete file name in the accessory
title.
o An "Insert File..." command has been added to the File menu. This
allows you to insert a whole file at the current insertion point. It
is much like a Paste but avoids a lot of the hassle. It currently
functions at the same speed as a Paste since both insert the file
character by character - this will most likely be improved in a
subsequent release.
o A "Save Selection..." command has been added to the File menu. It
allows you to save the selected text to a file of your choice - great
when you're going over messages and want to file away various bits for
future reference.
o "Goto Line Number" has been added in the Options menu. This puts up a
little dialog box and lets you enter a line number. Leaving the input
field blank results in the insertion point staying put.
o You can now delete text from the insertion point to the end of the
line using a Shift-Backspace keystroke.
o The Control-H keystroke now acts the same as a Backspace rather
than inserting a ^H character in the file.
o A new "STalker" menu title was added with the following commands.
These are only available if STalker is currently loaded:
o Type-Ahead Mode. This puts STeno in type-ahead mode causing it to
feed completed paragraphs to STalker for uploading to the host.
Type-ahead mode works as follows: a special marker character (the
triple = sign) is inserted in the buffer. As you type STeno acts
the same as always, including things like tab expansion and word
wrapping. When you type Return STeno will scan backward in the
file buffer for a line beginning with the special marker
character. It will then send all of the text line by line to
STalker starting from the marker all the way up to the cursor
location, excluding of course the marker character itself. If
"Send CR After Each Line" is checked then each line in the
paragraph will be sent with a trailing carriage return character.
If it is not checked, the entire paragraph will be sent as one
large line with a single carriage return at the end. If for
some reason you need to abort while STeno is feeding STalker
text simply hit UNDO.
Note that this is not functionally equivalent to cutting and
pasting since STalker will send the type-ahead text at full speed
whereas pasted text is sent using the ASCII upload settings.
While you're in type-ahead mode, control characters, function
keys, and the Control-Undo and ALT-ESC keystrokes will
"pass-through" from STeno to STalker, thus you can use ^S/^Q or
send a break without having to temporarily switch over to STalker.
Note that F10 and Shifted-F10 will NOT pass though - they still
reformat your paragraph.
o Arrange Windows. This will "tile" the STalker and STeno windows
so that STalker is in the top 2/3 of the screen and STeno is in
the bottom 1/3. This is the kind of thing you would find yourself
doing manually anyway during type-ahead mode so this command is
really just a convenient short-cut.
o Send CR After Each Line. See the description above under
"Type-Ahead Mode". This setting is only used while type-ahead
mode is active.
o Transmit Line/Selection. This command will pass either the
current line or the currently selected text to STalker for
uploading. UNDO will abort this operation if you
accidentally find yourself sending a big chunk of text.
o If you hold down one of Control, Shift, or Alternate while clicking on
the window "full" gadget STeno will resize its window to the startup
size.
o If you hold down Control, Left Shift, AND Alternate while clicking on
the window "close" gadget STeno will shutdown completely, freeing the
resources and memory it has allocated. This should only be used if you
are about to change resolutions since it has no value in other
situations.
