  43.     Alot of other Shareware authors have expressed their dismay in the
  44.     Shareware concept. It seems alot of people obtain or download Shareware
  45.     programs and use them without sending in their Shareware contribution.
  46.     If this trend continues many Shareware authors will need to distribute
  47.     their programs through a middle-man. You will then need to pay commercial
  48.     prices for these programs, instead of the low Shareware contribution.

  52.                             HOW TO USE VOLUME LABELER

  54.    Okay...so what exactly IS the Volume name..? When you click on a floppy 
  55.    icon from the GEM desktop and select FORMAT from the drop-down menu a
  56.    box appears. You have the option now of entering an identifying name for
  57.    the disk before formatting it. What you are REALLY doing is entering a
  58.    file name. The "filename" IS the volume name (which is why the Volume
  59.    name looks like a filename ie: VOLUME.DSK). This file is then "attributed"
  60.    by turning it's "Volume Label" bit (0x08) ON. I bet you knew that already.
  61.    Okay...enough history lesson...
  62.  
  63.    Why this program then..? Because GEM only allows you to change this
  64.    name when formatting a disk. Say you formatted a disk with the Volume
  65.    name WORDS.DOC and filled it with word processor documents. Later on
  66.    you decide that DOCUMENT. would be a better name. Well, the only way 
  67.    to change this with GEM would be to reformat a new disk with this new
  68.    name and copy all of these files to THAT disk. Yeccch !

  70.    Also...if you are using a hard disk you generally can't format it from
  71.    the GEM desktop. You usually need to format and partition it from within
  72.    a Hard Disk Utility program. Most of these programs don't give you the
  73.    option of adding a volume name. The result, none of your partitions
  74.    have Volume Labels...
  75.  
  76.    So-o-o-o...that's where Volume Labeler comes in. It allows you to change
  77.    a Floppy Disks OR Hard Disks Partition "Volume Label" whenever YOU feel
  78.    like it ! And how does it work..?

  80.    ENTERING TEXT
  81.    -~-~-~-~-~-~-
  82.    After running the program you will see a box containing an editable
  83.    text field and 4 buttons. The text field is where you change or enter
  84.    the Volume Label name. It works just like the one in the Format box.
  85.    If you don't enter ANY name or completely backspace over any name
  86.    in this box, and then click on CREATE, the Volume Label (if any)
  87.    will be erased from the disk.

  89.    THE BUTTONS

  92.    LOCATE:  Searches the current drive for the Volume Label.
  93.    CREATE:  Creates a "Volume Label File" using the name specified in the
  94.             editable text field.
  95.    CANCEL:  Quits or ends the program, or in the case of an accessory,
  96.             returns the program to it's endless loop. There it waits to
  97.             be selected again.
  98.    DRIVES:  This button calls up another box which allows you to select the
  99.             drive you wish to create a Volume Label for. Clicking on a
  100.             drive letter selects that drive as the destination for your
  101.             Volume Label and returns you to the first box.

  103.             The program will automatically default to Drive A. If you don't
  104.             specify a drive the program will assume you want Drive A.
  105.  
  106.    An example session...
  107.  
  108.    Run VOLUME.PRG. Click on DRIVES. Click on A. Type in the name VOLUME.DSK.
  109.    Click on CREATE. The program will then create a Volume Label named
  110.    VOLUME.DSK. This file will be created on the floppy contained in drive A.
  111.    Pretty easy, eh ?

  113.    Example 2...

  115.    Run VOLUME.PRG. Click on DRIVES. Click on A. Click on LOCATE. If the disk
  116.    contains a Volume Label it will appear in the editable text field. Change
  117.    the name. Click on CREATE. You have just renamed the disk.

  119.    NOTE: If you are using NeoDesk (C)Gribnif Software and are using the
  120.          NeoDesk Volume Label, the GEM Volume Label will not appear at
  121.          the bottom of the window...check your manual. The NeoDesk Volume
  122.          Label overrides the GEM label. This is a function of NeoDesk.

  142.    Since it seems alot of PD/SHAREWARE distributors are still carrying or
  143.    picking up VOLUME (even though THAT version is SEVERAL years old), I
  144.    decided to update it. There are NO plans to update it any further since
  145.    Albion and HeidiSeek include "volume labels" as part of the program.
