  127. 2. Introduction
  128.  
  129.      DiskMaster 3 is a disk-based utility program.  It came  about 
  130. because  of the annoyance of having to go hunting through  hundred 
  131. of  disks for the right utilities to look at files  on  disks. And 
  132. so, DiskMaster 3 was born. 
  133.  
  134. 3. History
  135.  
  136.      DiskMaster 1 was the first version, written in 1991 by myself 
  137. as an aid to using the Atari.  This version was never completed to 
  138. my satisfaction, and so was never released into the public domain.
  139.      In June,  1993,  after learning assembly language,  I started 
  140. work  on an isometric adventure game.  Part of this program was  a 
  141. text-writer  routine  to print a small font on a  low-res  graphic 
  142. screen.  Out of the versatility I built into the routine came  the 
  143. impetus to start work on a new version of diskmaster.  Since I had 
  144. already started on version 2, using a slow text routine, I decided 
  145. to revamp the front-end and replace the existing text routine with 
  146. the new,  faster one.  Out of this came version 3.

  149. 4. The Program
  150.  
  151. 4.1 Getting started
  152.  
  153.  
  154.      To  get started with DiskMaster,  after loading the  program, 
  155. replace the DiskMaster disk with another disk,  click on the  'LOG 
  156. DISK' icon,  select a side and then select a drive.  Once this has 
  157. been  done,  the program will read the disk and display a list  of 
  158. files in the selected file list window. The letter of the drive 
  159. will be displayed above the file list window.
  160.  
  161. 4.2 Moving around
  162.  
  163.      Files  marked 'DIR' are directories.  To enter  a  directory, 
  164. place the mouse pointer anywhere on the NAME of the directory, and 
  165. click  the left mouse button once.  The filename will  now  appear 
  166. highlighted.  If   at  this point   you decide NOT  to  enter  the 
  167. selected  directory,  click on the filename again with  the  RIGHT 
  168. mouse  button.  To  enter the highlight directory,  click  on  the 
  169. highlighted name again with the LEFT mouse button.
  170.      The program will now enter the directory,  and read any files 
  171. in that directory.  The current path will be displayed just  above 
  172. the file list window.
  173.      The first file listed in directories is always  a single dot. 
  174. This is unused. The  second file is always two dots. Clicking ONCE 
  175. on  this  file with  the  left mouse button  will return you  back
  176. ONE  directory level.
  177.      If,  at  any  time,  the current path name is  more  than  24 
  178. chartacters long,  only the last 24 characters will be  displayed. 
  179. (i.e.  it  will always show the current directory at  the  extreme 
  180. right hand side of the pathname bar.)
  181.  
  182. 4.3 Selecting files
  183.  
  184.      To select a single file,  click ONCE on the filename with the 
  185. LEFT mouse button. The name will be highlighted.
  186.      To  deselect a highlighted file,  click on it again with  the 
  187. LEFT mouse button.
  188.      Once a file or files have been highlighted,  the functions of 
  189. DiskMaster  will work on those files.  DiskMaster will perform  no 
  190. functions on un-highlighted files.

  192. 4.4 Moving through the list.
  193.  
  194.      If  the number of files in a directory is more than  18,  the 
  195. red bar to the right of the file list (between the arrows) will be 
  196. shorter.  This bar gives an indication of how many files there are 
  197. on the disk, and approximately where in the list you are currently 
  198. looking.
  199.      To  move  through the list,  click on either the up  or  down 
  200. arrows.  Clicking with the LEFT mouse button will scroll through 1 
  201. file at a time.  Clicking with the RIGHT mouse button will  scroll 
  202. through 18 files at a time.

  204. 4.5 Removing a drive
  205.  
  206.      To remove a drive from one of the file lists, select 'UNLOG', 
  207. and then select a side.  The drive will be removed  automatically. 
  208. (This  is  not a physical removal,  just a removal as far  as  the 
  209. program is concerned. Selecting 'LOG DISK' again on the same drive 
  210. will let the program access the files on that disk again.)

  213. 5. Some Functions
  214.  
  215. 5.1 Identify
  216.      Selecting 'IDENTIFY' will scan through any logged drives  and 
  217. try  an  identify  the  file type of  any  files  that  have  been 
  218. 'tagged'.  It  will pause after each identify.  Pressing  a  mouse 
  219. button will move to the next file in the list.
  220.  
  221. 5.2 DirSize
  222.  
  223.      'DIRSIZE'   scans  through  any  logged  drives  for   tagged 
  224. directories.  If it finds one,  DIRSIZE performs processing on the 
  225. directory  to determine how many bytes are used in  the  directory 
  226. tree,  how many subdirectories there are in the tree, and how many 
  227. files  there  are in the tree.  DIRSIZE displays a  status  window 
  228. while the processing is going on,  giving a running commentary  on 
  229. which directories and files are being processed. After DIRSIZE has 
  230. completed,  it returns the above information and then waits for  a 
  231. mouse button to be pressed.

  233. 5.3 Move
  234.  
  235.      Move  performs  the same function  as  copy,  however,  after 
  236. copying the file,  it deletes the source copy. See 'COPY' for more 
  237. information.
  238.  
  239. 5.4 Sort
  240.  
  241.      Sort  is used to change the way the files are listed  in  the 
  242. file windows.  The default,  UNS,  means 'display the files as they 
  243. appear on the disk',  with no sorting. ABC means 'sort the files in 
  244. alphabetical order', and EXT means 'sort the files in alphabetical 
  245. order,  by  extension'.  In other words,  sort the  extensions  in 
  246. alphabetical order.
  247.      SORT works on all file lists at the same time.

  249. 5.5 Play
  250.  
  251.      Play  can  play  either Amiga  *.MOD  soundtracker  files  or 
  252. digital sound samples.  PLEASE NOTE:  DiskMaster 3 will only  play 
  253. Amiga soundtracker modules of the NEW type.  Old versions of Amiga 
  254. Soundtracker are not supported. STE stereo output is NOT supported
  255. in version 3.
  256.      Samples  can only be played at the default 10.24Khz  rate  in 
  257. version 3.
  258.      If  you  aren't sure which version of MOD the  file  is,  use 
  259. IDENTIFY.  IDENTIFY will only recognise NEW MOD types  (i.e.  ones 
  260. that can be played)
  261.  
  262. 5.6 Colour
  263.  
  264.      Selecting 'COLOUR' will display a colour selector window,  in 
  265. which  the user can change the colours of the  program.  Selecting 
  266. any  one of the six colours with the left mouse button will  allow 
  267. that  colour to be changed.  The small window just above the  main 
  268. window shows how the colour changes will affect the final display.
  269.      Colour values are changed by moving one of the  three  colour 
  270. intensity  sliders.  The current value of the colour is  displayed 
  271. just below the colour boxes.
  272.      Once the colours have been set, clicking on OK will apply the 
  273. selected  colours  to the whole screen.  Clicking on on  'C'  will 
  274. cancel the operation, and clicking on 'D' will restore the default 
  275. colour palette.

  277. 5.7 Safe Mode
  278.  
  279.      Safe Mode is a simple ON/OFF switch.  If Safe Mode is  turned 
  280. 'ON',  any  operation that writes to the disk will  be  interupted 
  281. with  a  confirmation  message.  Selecting 'YES'  will  allow  the 
  282. operation  to  go ahead,  whereas selecting 'NO' will  cancel  the 
  283. operation.  This is designed to be a last check before changing  a 
  284. disk, but it can be disabled if necessary.

  287. 6. Overview
  288.  
  289. 6.1 About
  290.      Displays an about box.
  291.  
  292. 6.2 Identify
  293.      Attempts to identify the type of any tagged files.
  294.  
  295. 6.3 MKDIR
  296.      Attempts  to  create a directory on the selected  drive.  The 
  297. directory  name  is  entered from the  keyboard  into  the  window 
  298.  titled 'Please Enter Name'.  Filenames cannot exceed 8 characters
  299. with  a three character extension.
  300.  
  301. 6.4 RMDIR
  302.      Attempts to remove a tagged directory from the selected disk. 
  303. If the selected directory is NOT empty, an error will be generated.
  304.  
  305. 6.5 DirSize
  306.      Returns  the  size,  in  bytes, number of directories and the 
  307. number of files within the selected directory tree.
  308.  
  309. 6.6 Free
  310.      If 'RAM' is selected from the submenu on the right hand  side 
  311. of the screen, the amount of currently available ram is returned.
  312.      If  'DISK' is selected from the submenu,  the amount of  free 
  313. bytes on any of the logged drives is returned. If, for some reason 
  314. this cannot be determined, an error is generated.

  316. 6.7 Copy
  317.      This  copies all tagged files from one disk  to  another.  If 
  318. files are tagged on both disks, the program will copy all files 
  319. from the left hand selected drive to the right hand selected drive 
  320. first,  and  then perform the operation from the right  hand  side 
  321. selected drive to the left hand selected drive.
  322.  
  323. 6.8 Rename
  324.      Attempts  to rename any tagged file with a new  name  entered 
  325. from the keyboard. Pressing 'ESC' during the name entry will abort 
  326. the operation on that fle.
  327.  
  328. 6.9 Delete
  329.      Attempts to delete all tagged files from the selected drives.
  330.  
  331. 6.10 Move
  332.      Copies all tagged files,  and then deletes the original  file 
  333. from disk.
  334.  
  335. 6.11 Sort
  336.      Left mouse button:
  337.           Sort file lists according to the selected option.
  338.      Right Mouse button:
  339.           Display submenu of sort types on the right hand side  of 
  340. the  screen.  Selecting one of these options with the  LEFT  mouse 
  341. button  will  set  the sort type  to  that  selected.  The  option 
  342. selected is NOT performed when selected.
  343.  
  344. 6.12 Format
  345.      Displays a format window with a list of options.  Clicking on 
  346. the options with the LEFT mouse button will changes them. Once the 
  347. selected  options have been set,  clicking on GO will  format  the 
  348. selected disk.
  349.      Clicking on EXIT will abort the operation.
  350.      During formatting, holding down either mouse button will stop 
  351. the formatting.
  352.      This function WILL NOT format hard drives.
  353.      The formatted disk is NOT automatically logged.
  354. 6.13 View
  355.      Left Mouse Button:
  356.           View any tagged files of the selected type.
  357.      Right Mouse Button:
  358.           Displays  a type submenu on the right hand side  of  the 
  359.           screen.  Selecting one of the types with the LEFT  mouse 
  360.           button changes the default view type to that selected.
  361.           Valid types: NEO - NeoChrome picture files
  362.                        PI? - Degas Low or Medium resolution 
  363.                              uncompressed picture files. 
  364.                        PC? - Degas Low or Medium resolution
  365.                              compressed picture files.
  366.                        SPU - Spectrum 512 uncompressed picture
  367.                              files.

  369.                                                        
  370. 6.14 Play
  371.      Left mouse button
  372.           Plays any of the tagged files of the selected type.
  373.      Right Mouse Button:
  374.           Displays  a type submenu on the right hand side  of  the 
  375.           screen.  Selecting  a  type with  the  LEFT  mousebutton 
  376.           changes the default type.
  377.           Valid types : MOD - Amiga soundtracker modules.
  378.                         SPL - *.SPL or *.SAM digital sound 
  379.                               samples.
  380.                         ABK - AMOS/STOS tracker modules.
  381.  
  382. 6.15 Print
  383.      Left mouse button
  384.           Print  all  tagged  files of the selected  type  to  the 
  385.           printer.
  386.      Right mouse button
  387.           Displays  a type submenu on the right hand side  of  the 
  388.           screen. 
  389.           Valid types: PIC - prints NEO or Degas picture files.
  390.                        TXT - prints all file types as text
  391.                        DIR - prints the selected directory list
  392.  
  393. 6.16 Open
  394.           Opens all tagged files as text files.  Press HELP in the 
  395. display window for help with the text viewer.
  396.  
  397. 6.17 All
  398.      Tags ALL the files on the selected drive list
  399.  
  400. 6.18 None
  401.      Untags ALL the files on the selected drive list
  402.  
  403. 6.19 Saver
  404.      Left mouse button
  405.           Select the time delay for inactivitty before the  screen 
  406.           saver starts.
  407.      Right Mouse button
  408.           Displays  a submenu of screen saver types on  the  right 
  409.           hand side of the screen.  Select the type with the  LEFT 
  410.           mouse button.
  411.  
  412. 6.20 Colour
  413.      Displays the colour selction window.  The program colours may 
  414. be changed from this window.
  415.  
  416. 6.21 Log
  417.      After selecting which side to log the drive list  to,  select 
  418. the  drive from the submenu on the right hand side on the  screen. 
  419. If  any  of the listed drives is not connected to the  system,  it 
  420. cannot be selected. 
  421.      WARNING!  Systems with only ONE drive will be able to  access 
  422. both  drives  A  and B.  This is caused by a quirk  in  the  Atari 
  423. operating system.
  424.      RAM drives are recognised.
  425.  
  426. 6.22 Unlog
  427.      Removes the selected drive list from view.
  428.                                                       
  429. 6.23 Safe Mode
  430.      Displays  a  submenu on the right hand side  of  the  screen. 
  431. Selecting an option with the LEFT mouse button turns safe mode  on 
  432. or off.

  435. 7. Lastly
  436.      Clicking  with  the RIGHT mouse button within either  of  the 
  437. file windows,  but NOT on a directory name will force the  program 
  438. to re-read the file list from disk
  439.  
  440.      Both of the icons marked QUIT will exit the program when they 
  441. are selected with EITHER mouse button.

  444. 8. Under Consideration
  445.      The  following  options are under  consideration  for  future 
  446. versions of this program, subject to demand from registered users.
