  61. Section 1 - What's FizzBill?
  62. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  64. Phone Bills are the worst part of comms, you enjoy sending out your messages,
  65. playing Space Trader, downloading files but most people don't enjoy the 
  66. phonebill at the end of it.  This isn't FizzBill's problem.
  67.  
  68. What is FizzBill's problem, however, is to try and give you an idea of just
  69. how much money it's costing you ( or somebody! ) for your comms 'fix'.
  70.  
  71. FizzBill does have some limitations:
  72.  
  73.          o will only work with the brilliant Freeze Dried Terminal program.
  74.  
  75.            However you can use the BinkleyTerm, Semper, TeddyTerm & Connect Log 
  76.            converters, to generate FizzBill compatible Log files.  
  77.            Other Log converter could become available for your fave comms 
  78.            program, just ask for more details.
  79.  
  80.          o will only calculate Cheap Rate/Economy calls on BT/Mercury networks
  81.  
  82.          o You need to setup FzDSTerm before using FizzBill, but it's not
  83.            that hard...Honest!
  84.  
  85.          o FizzBill and the converter programs have not been tested on
  86.            the Falcon or under Mint.
  87.

  89. Section 2 - How to setup FzDSTerm
  90. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  91.  
  92. The first thing I suggest you do is to read the manual to FzDSTerm, which will
  93. help you understand the settings needed for FizzBill, which i'll explain
  94. in a moment.
  95.  
  96. The next thing you need to do, is to make sure you have your ST's system
  97. clock set to the correct date and time.  For those with Hard Disks, your
  98. built-in clock will take care of this for you, however for others there
  99. are loads of programs and Accs to set the correct time and date.
  100.  
  101. You will need to change some settings in FzDSTerm, before running FizzBill.
  102.  
  103. Go into the 'System Setup' screen of FzDSTerm ie. click on 'System Setup'
  104. from the Main Menu.  Once you are in the 'System Setup' screen you
  105. will see a box called 'Daily .LOGs', you will need to click on that box,
  106. which will enable the writing of Log files, whenever you use FzDSTerm.
  107.  
  108. The Second thing you should do is to change the number of days that FzDSTerm
  109. saves your log files for.  This option is on the 'System Setup' screen and
  110. just click on the 'Save for xx days' button and change the number of days
  111. saved to the maximum of 90.
  112.  
  113. The next thing you MIGHT like to change is the Path to which these
  114. Log files are written to.  This path is normally the same path that the
  115. FzDSTerm is in, although I've changed mine.  To do this you will need to
  116. Create a folder, for example, called 'FZDSLOGS', which you can do
  117. either from Desktop or from within FzDSTerm.
  118.

  121. Section 2 - How to setup FzDSTerm Cont.
  122. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  123.  
  124. Once you've created the folder you need to go into the 'Default Path' screen
  125. which is accessed from the Main Menu.  Once you have entered this screen,
  126. you will need to click on the 'Path for Daily log file' section and you
  127. can then enter the pathname, again for example, FZDSLOGS.
  128.  
  129. Now don't forget to re-save your Config file!
  130.

  132. Section 3 - Using FizzBill
  133. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  134.  
  135. Double-click on FBILLV23.PRG, the first thing you'll see is a the title 
  136. screen, so just hit a key and it'll go away.
  137.  
  138. Now, you'll have the answer the following questions.  You can type in HELP
  139. at the prompts for a little on-line help.
  140.  
  141. o 'Select log files on drive (Eg. A, HELP or RETURN to exit )     :'
  142.  
  143.    Enter the drive letter (A to Z) where your Log files are located.
  144.    For example, if you have created the FZDSLOGS folder on Drive D then
  145.    you just type 'D' and press return.
  146.  
  147.    Note that you can enter more than one drive letter.  So, if you have
  148.    your Freeze Dried logs on drive D and your converted logs from BinkleyTerm
  149.    on drive F then just enter 'DF' and press return.  Note that this will
  150.    slow things down, so it's best to have ALL log files on one drive.
  151.  
  152. o 'Enter Date to select from (Eg. 010693, HELP, RETURN for ALL)   :'
  153.  
  154.    Usually just hit the Return key here, to select all dates, however
  155.    if you just want to look at all calls from 29-Sep-1993, for example,
  156.    just enter '290993' and only calls from that date onwards will be shown.
  157.  
  158.    If you want to look at calls between 20-Sep-1993 and 25-Sep-1993 for
  159.    example, enter '200993 250993' and only calls between the dates will be
  160.    shown.  Note: The space between the dates!  If you want to look at calls
  161.    made Today then just type in TODAY.
  162.  
  163. o 'Detail or Summary listing (Eg. D, HELP, RETURN for Detail)     :'
  164.  
  165.   If you type 'D' or just hit Return, you'll get a list of ALL calls made,
  166.   followed by a summary.  If you type 'S' then you just get the Summary, which
  167.   speed things up a little.
  168.  
  169. o 'Output to Screen, File, Prt (Eg. S, HELP, RETURN for Screen)   :'
  170.  
  171.   Normally just hit Return for output to the screen, but you can send output
  172.   to a file by typing 'F' or to the printer by typing 'P'
  173.  
  174.   The un-calculated calls listing will only appear when you select output
  175.   to a File.  If you have any Freeze Dried Terminal calls, which cannot
  176.   be calculated then the details will be written to the FIZZBILL.ERR file.
  177.   The un-calculated calls are either calls that you have made by typing
  178.   'ATDT' or just by the modem going on/off hook.

  181. Section 3 - Using FizzBill
  182. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  183.  
  184. After all this, FizzBill should spring into action...
  185.  
  186. First, FizzBill will try and find a file called 'FIZZBILL.BBS' which
  187. will contain any Charge Band details you have entered for a BBS.  But the
  188. first time you run the program, it will not find one and you'll get a
  189. message telling you so.
  190.  
  191. The program scans your selected drive to try and find some FzDSTerm
  192. Daily Log files or any of the converted log files.  If there are no logs OR 
  193. no logs which match your date selection then you'll get the following message:
  194.  
  195. 'Sorry, no FizzBill Logs found. Try another drive or selection date.'
  196.  
  197. When a BBS is found in one of the daily log files, you'll have to tell
  198. FizzBill what type of charge band the call uses.
  199.  
  200. Here's an example that I entered for 'The Tavern'
  201.

  213. Enter Charge Band for The Tavern : B1

  215. Here I type B1 because it is a low cost route, however, you just enter the
  216. one applicable to your bbs.
  217.  
  218. If your using the BT network and are dialling overseas then find out which
  219. charge band you are using and enter the correct one. Eg. I4 for band 4 etc.
  220. Since there are 13 charge bands then you should only enter a band no. from
  221. 1 to 13!
  222.  
  223. If you are using the Mercury Network then you should use the codes that
  224. start with M.  
  225.  
  226. The Mercury Codes are as follows:

  230.       MN1 = Tier b1 = Calls over 56km on low cost routes
  231.       MN2 = Tier b  = Calls over 56km
  232.       MN3 = Tier a  = Calls up to 56km

  324. I'll go though the above example and just explain a few things.  First I'll
  325. go thought the 'DETAIL' lines...
  326.  
  327. BBS Name - Gosh this is hard, it's the name of the BBS that you called.
  328.  
  329. Date     - The date you called the BBS eg. 200993 is really 20-Sep-1993
  330.  
  331. Start    - The time when you logged on to the BBS ( in the form HH:MM:SS )
  332.  
  333. Finish   - The time when you logged off from the BBS ( in the form HH:MM:SS )
  334.  
  335. Elapsed  - How long you were online to the BBS ( in the form HH:MM:SS )
  336.  
  337. Cost     - The cost in Pounds you were charged eg. 0.042 is just over 4p
  338.  
  339. Crg      - This is the Charge band of the BBS you called.
  340.  
  341.            If a '@' appears in this area, it means that the call was
  342.            made during BT's Weekend Rate period. 
  343.  
  344.            If a '+' appears here it means that it's a discount call made 
  345.            using BT's Close Ties service, ie. Choose 5 phone numbers and
  346.            for a one-off payment of #4.99, you'll receive a 5% discount. 
  347.            I beleive Mercury run the same sort of service.  Only Registered 
  348.            FizzBill users can use this option.
  349.  
  350. It       - If you are using the BT network and a '*' appears here then the
  351.            call made will appear on your Itemised Phone Bill!

  364. Now for the 'SUMMARY' lines...
  365.

  367. Total On-line Time       - The total amount of time you were connected to the
  368.                            BBS for ( in the form HH:MM:SS )
  369.  
  370. Approx Cost Ex Vat       - This is the estimate of how much your comms
  371.                            phone bill will be EXCLUDING VAT
  372.  
  373. Approx Cost Inc Vat      - This is the estimate of how much your comms
  374.                            phone bill will be INCLUDING VAT
  375.  
  376. Total No of Calls        - This is how many calls you have made to ALL BBS
  377.  
  378. Itemised No of Calls     - This is the number of calls that will appear on a BT
  379.                            itemised Phone Bill
  380.  
  381. Itemised Cost Ex Vat     - This the estimate of how much your Itemised
  382.                            calls cost EXCLUDING VAT
  383.  
  384. Itemised Cost Inc Vat    - This is the estimate of how much your Itemised
  385.                            calls cost INCLUDING VAT
  386.  
  387. BT Cost (Inc. Vat.)      - FizzBill's estimate of the BT part of your bill
  388.  
  389. Mercury Cost (Inc. Vat.) - FizzBill's estimate of the Mercury part of your bill
  390.  
  391. Average Minutes Online   - This is how long your average call to a BBS took
  392.  
  393. Un-Calculated Calls      - Normally this should be zero, however if isn't
  394.                            you can get more information about the calls
  395.                            via FIZZBILL.ERR, which is produced when you output
  396.                            the listing to a File.
  397.  
  398. Now for the BBS breakdown.  This section will show you how much each BBS
  399. has cost you to call.  So in the above example you can see I called The Tavern
  400. 18 times and cost #1.88, where as I only called DeskTop bbs once and
  401. that cost me 5p  This is because DeskTop bbs is a LOCAL call to me
  402. and The Tavern bbs isn't.  This section is really only useful when you call
  403. more than one BBS but it's interesting to see which boards you call the
  404. most.

  406. Right, now remember earlier you had to type in those charge details, well
  407. after the SUMMARY, FizzBill will save these charge details to a file called
  408. 'FIZZBILL.BBS', so that you don't have to re-enter the details again the next
  409. time you use FizzBill.  Note that this file is ONLY updated when you have
  410. entered some 'new' charge details.

  421. Section 4 - Configuring FizzBill

  434. FizzBill can read a config file which will enable it to run in batch,
  435. ie. from a shell or as normal ( but saves a lot of typing )
  436.  
  437. The FIZZBILL.CFG file should be located in the FizzBill directory.  An
  438. example config file is included eg:

  462. This is a list of ALL current calls... ! Header for each page. Max 60 Chars

  465. If you need to search two drives for the Log files eg.  Drives D and E then
  466. just change the 'D' to 'DE'
  467.  
  468. The 'ALL' in the Date selection will select ALL calls that you have made,
  469. however you may with to run calls From/To a date, if that's the case then
  470. just change the 'ALL' to 'ddmmyy ddmmyy'.  You may also want to display
  471. calls just for the CURRENT day, if you do, just replace the 'ALL' with
  472. 'TODAY'
  473.  
  474. If you want a summary listing then change the 'D' to an 'S
  475.  
  476. The output of FizzBill can be changed as follows: 'F' - output to a file
  477.                                                   'S' - output to screen
  478.  
  479.  
  480.                                                   'P' - output to printer
  481. Section 4 - Configuring FizzBill Cont.
  482. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  483.  
  484. The 'Ask for keypress' option, when running from a shell is usually set
  485. to 'NO' as this stops the 'Press a key for more...' message.  For normal
  486. Desktop operation this should be changed to 'YES'
  487.  
  488. If you wish to speed up FizzBill when running from a shell then you
  489. can stop the title screen being displayed by replacing the 'YES' with
  490. a 'NO'
  491.  
  492. The 'NO' in the Display 0 calls BBS line, means that when FizzBill
  493. breaks down the bbs names at the end of the listing, you will only
  494. see the bbs that have had one call or more.  It saves you looking
  495. at 'You called XXX, 0 times, costing 0.00'
  496.  
  497. If you have a 'NO' in the NLQ for printouts line then you will get
  498. a draft printout, when you select the output to printer option,
  499. otherwise you get a NLQ printout.
  500.  
  501. The next line of the .CFG file, ie. Kill FIZZBILL.LIS & FIZZBILL.ERR will
  502. delete the FIZZBILL.LIS and FIZZBILL.ERR files BEFORE the program
  503. starts.  Normally this should be set to 'NO'.  It's only useful
  504. if you are using Txt-2-Msg (A NeSTWare program by Mark Matts) and
  505. you want to make sure you don't receive an old FIZZBILL.LIS file.
  506.  
  507. If you have a 'YES' in the next line then FizzBill will give
  508. you a cost breakdown of calls made to each bbs.
  509.  
  510. The next line is only useful if you run FizzBill in Medium Rez.  If
  511. the colour option is "NO", FizzBill run run, without changing any of
  512. the current colours.  However, if you say "YES" then colours will be
  513. added certain parts of the output to the screen.  The colours selected
  514. can be changed by the colour line.  Eg. the background colour black
  515. is selected by using the RGB values "00 00 00".  
  516.  
  517. Note:  Make sure the RGB values are between 0-7 and are two characters
  518.        Eg.  "01 07 04"
  519.  
  520. The next line, ie. 'Full nested LOG search' will tell FizzBill to
  521. either search ALL folders for LOG files, if set to YES.  If this
  522. option is set to NO then FizzBill will only search for LOG files
  523. ONE level deep, which will be a lot quicker.
  524.  
  525. The next line, should normally set to 'NO', unless you have registered
  526. FizzBill.  Once registered set this to 'YES' and FizzBill will use the
  527. charge files that you have setup, which will enable you to cope with 
  528. changes to costs on the BT/Mercury networks
  529.  
  530. The next line is 'Re-calculate times'.  Normally Freeze Dried and
  531. BinkleyTerm calculate the elapsed time of the call made, however

  544. After this, is the 'Only read log files starting xx' option.  Normally
  545. this should be set to 'FT_BT_SP_TT_CN_UU_FP'.  In other words FizzBill
  546. will try and find log names that start FTyymmdd.LOG, BTyymmdd.LOG etc.
  547. If, for example, I released a new FizzBill log converter called
  548. 'AA2Fizz', just add '_AA' to this line and FizzBill will load in the new
  549. converted logs.  NOTE: you MUST use the underscore character!
  550.  
  551. The 'Charge BT calls per Second' option should normally be set to 'NO' ie.
  552. BT calls at the moment are rounded UP to the nearest UNIT, however I believe 
  553. that in the future calls will be charged per second, in which case change
  554. the option to 'YES'
  555.  
  556. The next line is the 'Include Discount numbers', normally this should be
  557. set to 'NO', unless your a registered user and want to be able to use 
  558. BT's Closer Ties service.  Ie. Choose any 5 numbers and receive a 5%
  559. discount.  I believe Mercury run something similar.
  560.  
  561. After this is the 'Lines per page' option.  This is the number of lines per
  562. page on your printer that FizzBill will use.  Change this number to 70 for
  563. A4 size paper.
  564.  
  565. The next option ie. 'Header Text' contains a line of text, maximum of 60
  566. characters, that will apprear on each page of your FizzBill listing.  For
  567. example, you could change the text to 'All calls from 01-Jan-94...'.
  568.  
  569. The next option ie. 'Decrease online time by x secs' will normally be 0.
  570. This option is really a fiddle factor... if, for example, on your Mercury
  571. Bill you can see that their elapsed time for each call is approx. 14 seconds
  572. less than FizzBill's then by changing the 0 to 14, FizzBill's elapsed times
  573. per call will be decreased by 14 seconds, therefore being more accurate.  
  574. Note: This option only works when you set the 'Re-Calculate times' option,
  575. to 'YES'

  577. FizzBill can also be used from the command line.  Enter -help on the command
  578. line for a list of the following parameters...

  611.                            and 07.04.94, summary only.  Note there is NO
  612.                            Space between the dates!

  614. '-calcNO -hdrNormal_Times' will turn off the re-calculation of elapsed times
  615.                            and sets the page header to 'Normal Times'
  616.                            Note: the use of the userscore character instead
  617.                            of a space.

  619. '-fileBBS -cfgTEST -typeF' will output the report to a File called
  620.                            BBS.LIS/BBS.ERR and will read the other
  621.                            parameters from TEST.CFG, instead of FIZZBILL.CFG

  623. All the programs can be run from batch because they read a .CFG
  624. file.  Choose a shell program, eg. TOMShell and something simple like
  625. the example below can be used to automate things...

  705. DupFind  - When you get your new hard drive, you throw on loadsa programs
  706.            from floppy onto you new fast drive.  The problem is that it's
  707.            very easy to get the same program/file on two or three different
  708.            areas of your disk.

  711.            have been duplicated and where you can find them.

  728.            and with what packer...All you need to do then is to use a
  729.            de-packer or Mug UK's Multi-file de-packer and away you go!

  731.            Having Un-packed files on your hard disk, makes things a lot
  732.            faster....

  734. FoldIt   - A little FreeWare program that will LZH ALL folders on a drive
  735.            into a single .LZH file, with the same name as the folder.  It
  736.            will also, un-compress ALL .LZH files on a drive and put the
  737.            contents of the .LZH file into a folder.  None of the usual
  738.            typing of loadsa command lines etc.

  740. JekQuote - This little program is really only of use to Jekyll users; Just
  741.            copy this program into the Auto folder and each time you boot-up
  742.            a quote will be written to your Jekyll.Ban file, just to make
  743.            comms more silly...

  746.            add comments or a file to ARC/LZH/ZIP/ZOO files BUT on a wildcard
