  10. --> Introduction
  11.  
  12.     The MegaSTE Configuration Set is a collection of small programs that 
  13. will set up the Cache and Speed Configuration for your MegaSTE. The 
  14. programs are: FAST.PRG, FASTNC.PRG, NORM.PRG, and WHATAMI.PRG. I will 
  15. explain exactly what these programs do later in this READ.ME file.

  17.     If you do not own a MegaSTE, then these programs are probably of no 
  18. use to you. However, please feel free to pass them along to someone who 
  19. might find them useful!

  22. --> A Word on Distribution
  23.  
  24.     These programs are being distributed as "shareware." This means that 
  25. you are free to give these programs to anyone, upload to Bulletin Board 
  26. Systems, USEnet, etc. as long as ALL of the programs (FAST.PRG, FASTNC.PRG,
  27. NORM.PRG, and WHATAMI.PRG) and this READ.ME file are included and NOT 
  28. altered in any way. In other words, feel free to distribute this program 
  29. far and wide as long as you leave it just as it is now.

  31.     Since these programs aren't very big and they don't do a whole lot, 
  32. I am not asking for alot of money for them. If you use them and you find
  33. them useful, I ask that you send me $5.00 dollars. This small sum will 
  34. help me to cover the 40 percent increase in my tuition costs (Here in 
  35. California, the California State University System was forced to raise 
  36. their tuition 40 percent this coming year due to State Budget problems!). 
  37. Remember, shareware programs are being distributed on the honor system. 
  38. If you use them, you are expected to pay for them.

  48. --> What are these programs anyway?
  49.  
  50.     I'm glad you asked! These programs are a result of some messages I
  51. read on GEnie, where users wanted to change the Speed and Cache settings
  52. of their MegaSTE machines without having to have the new Control Panel 
  53. loaded. They wanted the best of both worlds: they wanted to change these
  54. settings and have the memory available that the Control Panel would 
  55. normally take up.
  56.  
  57.     Before I continue a note about the Control Panel: The Control Panel
  58. is a really great tool. It is expandable and allows you to FULLY configure 
  59. your system. These programs are in NO way designed to replace the
  60. functionality of the Control Panel. If you want more than these programs 
  61. offer, consider using the Control Panel.

  63.     Anyway, after thinking about these GEnie messages, I did some research
  64. and started to write the collection of programs you now have.

  67. --> Okay, they set the Cache and Speed settings. But, what do each of 
  68.     these 4 programs do?
  69.  
  70.     Wow! You ask great questions. Let me see if I can break down each 
  71. program and tell you what it does:
  72.  
  73.     - FAST.PRG
  74.  
  75.         FAST.PRG will put the MegaSTE into 16Mhz mode with the 
  76.         Cache Enabled. I called it FAST, because it will make the 
  77.         machine run fast! 
  78.  
  79.         When you run the program, it will tell you (in the form of 
  80.         an Alert Box) that the machine is set to 16Mhz and the Cache 
  81.         is Enabled. After you click on the "Thanks" button, the 
  82.         program will exit, taking you back to the Desktop.

  84.     - FASTNC.PRG
  85.  
  86.         FASTNC.PRG will put the MegaSTE into 16Mhz mode with the 
  87.         Cache Disabled. Thus the "NC" (for No Cache) on the end of 
  88.         filename.

  90.         Just like FAST.PRG, this program will display an Alert Box 
  91.         that tells you that your MegaSTE is now running at 16Mhz 
  92.         with the Cache disabled. After you click on the "Thanks" 
  93.         button, the program will exit, taking you back to the Desktop.

  95.         When this program is executed as a TOS program or put in the
  96.         AUTO Folder, it will not display the Alert Box. Instead, it
  97.         will display roughly the same message in text form.
  98.  
  99.     - NORM.PRG
  100.  
  101.         NORM.PRG will put the MegaSTE into 8Mhz mode with the Cache 
  102.         Disabled. I called this program "NORM" because this would be
  103.         "normal" for an STE or ST computer. Regular 1040STE or ST 
  104.         machines run at 8Mhz and don't have a Cache.

  106.         NORM.PRG displays an Alert Box telling you that your MegaSTE 
  107.         is now running at 8Mhz with the Cache Disabled. Click on the 
  108.         "Thanks" button to exit the program and return to the desktop.

  110.         If you execute this program from the AUTO Folder as a TOS 
  111.         program from a CLI shell, you won't see the Alert Box, but 
  112.         the program will print roughly the same message in text form.

  114.     - WHATAMI.PRG
  115.  
  116.         WHATAMI.PRG is a program that when executed will tell you 
  117.         what speed and cache configuration you are currently in. 
  118.  
  119.         When you run this program it will display an Alert Box that 
  120.         tells you the speed and cache setting. Click on the "Ok" 
  121.         button to exit the program and return to the Desktop.

  123.         If this program is executed as a TOS program or put in the 
  124.         AUTO Folder, you won't see the Alert Box, you will see roughly 
  125.         the same message in text form.

  128.     All of these programs will work on a MegaSTE in _any_ resolution.
  129. They will run from the AUTO Folder, the built-in GEM Desktop, CLI 
  130. environments, etc. The only limitation is that they do not run as 
  131. Accessories. Also, when these programs are run in TOS Mode (or the
  132. AUTO Folder), the message that they display is only one line. I wanted
  133. to keep it small, because I don't really enjoy seeing these 
  134. "half-screen" welcome messages from AUTO Folder programs.

  136.     If you happen to attempt to run these programs on something other
  137. than a MegaSTE, the program will tell you that the programs only work
  138. on the MegaSTE and exit gracefully. Go ahead, try to run these programs
  139. on other ST compatible computers! I dare you! <grin>

  141.     On a serious note, if you find _ANYTHING_ wrong with these programs,
  142. please let me know. I want to make sure that this software is useful to 
  143. you and bug free.
