Space Wars 2000

Rather than distribute a crippled version of this game, and getting the
full game upon registering, I decided to distribute the entire game, and
rely upon the honesty of the ST owning population. Remember registering to
shareware will ensure continued support by shareware authors. This will be
my last ST production depending on the amount of support.

Description of the Game
-----------------------
Objective
---------
Space Wars 2000 is a shoot em up for 2 to 4 players, in which your aim is
to destroy all the other players. The game is split up into a number of
rounds (selectable). The winner will be the person who has won the most of
these rounds. In the event of a tie, the person with the most cash will
win.
Controlling your ship
---------------------
Each ship is controlled by a joystick:-
Left - Rotate left
Right - Rotate right
Up - Thrust forward
Down - Thrust Back
Fire - Fire front weapon
Down & fire - Fire rear weapon
Controlling the menu screens
----------------------------
There are two type of menus.
1) Those with numbers down the side:-
Press the relevant number key to select the option
Use the up/down cursor keys to scroll through if applicable
2) Those without numbers down the side:-
Use the up/down cursor keys to scroll through the options
Press RETURN to select the option
Note, ESCAPE can be used as cancel in most cases
As from V1.10, the joystick can be used to control menus, after the game
has been started up, each player can use his/her joystick to control menu
options relevant to themselves. Up/down/left/right navigates, and fire
selects. Some things still need keyboard input though.
Quitting to TOS
---------------
Press F10 from the main menu screen
Quit game and Return to main menu
---------------------------------
Press F10 from shipyard/launch menu.
Ships
-----
Ships all comprise of various components:-
Ship body, engine, front weapon, rear weapon, special, armour.
Different combinations will affect the ship's speed, acceleration,
handling, shields and firepower.
What ship you can have is limited by you cash. Though, each ship's hull
can only withstand a certain mass limit, so the smaller ships are limited
in what they can have.
Weapons
-------
Machine guns - Fast firing rate, but causes little damage
Though has lots of ammunition, and cheap.
Pulse rifles - Causes little damage, but have lots of
ammunition are cheap to run.
Auto cannons - Moderate damage, lots of ammunition, long
range and reasonably cheap.
Rocket launchers - Causes medium damage, fair amount of ammo,
long range and averagely priced.
Acid sprayer/Flamethrower - Causes little damage, but has lots of ammo
and fast firing rate, but short range.
Mine layer - Drops mines, causes lots of damage.
Heat seeker - Fire and forget missiles, Causes medium
damage, but has little ammo.
Pocket rocket/Unguided missile- Very long range, and causes meduim damage.
Laser cannon - Low fire rate, but causes lots of damage.
Heavy laser - Very expensive, but even more damage.
Death Beam - Deluxe weapon, damage extreme, but very
heavy and expensive, and limited ammo.
Hyperspace - Quick escape in tight moments.
Insurance
---------
It is a wise idea to insure your ship before you launch, unless you are
confident that you're not going to die (or you can't afford the premium).
The base premium is 10% of the ship's price, and the premium increases by
1% for each claim you have made. The premium covers you for one combat
round.
Armour
------
Different armour offer different protection.
Protection | Effect
-----------+------------------
1 | Standard damage
2 | Half damage
3 | Third damage
4 | Quarter damage (impervious to machine guns/flamethrowers)
Specials
--------
Auto-hyperspace - Similar to hyperspace, but activates when you're
just about to get hit by a bullet. Limited uses.
Ramplate - Halves damage from collisions.
Attractor - Causes other ships to be pulled towards you.
ECM - Makes you less likely to get locked on by a seeker.
Death Bomb - Sets of 20 heavy laser beams when you die.
Death Nuke - If you can't win, then no-one else should.
Launches 20 death beams when you die.
Death Seeker - Sets of 20 heet-seekers when you die.
Shipyard
--------
This is where you get to adjust your ship. The various menu are rather
self explanitary. I shall just list anything which may not be entirely
obvious.
1) On top middle of the screen, your current cash, chip cost etc is
displayed. If the cost is displayed in red writing, then it means that you
cannot afford the ship. If it is displayed in yellow, then it means that
you can afford the ship, but you can't afford to insure it afterwoods
(very bad move - not insuring your ship that is).
2) When asked for a ship filename to save, it must be a valid normal ST
filename (without extension) ie. 8 characters, no spaces,?'s or *'s.
Combat Screen
-------------
There is a status panel at the bottom of the screen, in the following
format (xxx represents a number):-
Fxxx Rxxx
S:xxxxx*x
The numbers after F and R represent ammo remaining for front and rear
mountings respectively.
The number after S represents the number of units of armour remaining, the
number after the * represents the protection the armour gives you.
Each ship has a dot in the top left corner, this dot is colour according
to the player, and makes players much easier to identify. Especially when
two players choose the same ship body!
Sometimes various bonuses appear on screen in yellow. The pound symbol
gives you extra cash, whereas the bullet symbol fills up your ammo for all
your weapons.
There are two starports in the combat zone, stopping over these will
gradually fill up your ammo - but at a price. You'll get the bill later.
If the round is not over within 5 minutes then the no-one wins.
How damage can be caused
------------------------
1) Getting shot.
2) Colliding with another ship.
3) Colliding with an asteroid.
4) Colliding with a border (top/bottom - if vertical wrap is off)
Collisions cause damage depending on speeds and masses of objects
concerned. All factors being equal, both objects get damaged by the same
amount in a collision.
Inter-round screens
-------------------
At the end of a combat round, the status of the players are given, their
hit ratio, shots fired etc.
The only thing which is not obvious is B.P. This stands for 'Bought from
Port' and indicates how much the player spent at the starports during the
fight.
Options
-------
The options screen is accessed from the main menu screen.
The recommended option values are the default settings, but they may be
tailored to your liking:-
Starting cash: How much cash you start with
Interest rate: Determines how much interest you earn per round
on unspent cash.
Number of rounds: How long the game will last
Sound mode: Flicks between No sound/STFM sound/STE sound
Asteroids: Can be on or off
Ship gravity: When turned on, causes gravitational attraction
between ships and asteroids. (Not recommended.)
Vertical wrap: When turned on, top/down of the screen is wrap
around.
Friction: If on then space is no longer a perfect vacuum.
(It is highly recommended to leave this on).
Hints for better performance
----------------------------
1) Play on an STE
2) The more players the slower the game.
3) Asteroids also cause slowdown.
4) So does having ship gravity enabled.
5) So does having STFM sound enabled.
History
-------
V1.00 6th March 1994
First release version, rather buggy.
V1.10 6th April 1994
Game now has shareware status.
Major bug fixes from the earlier rushed V1.00 release.
Many improvements, including death-seeker.
Now actually uses the STE blitter (if present).
Soundtracker MOD removed due to keyboard problems.
Added joystick control in the menus.
