  3.          Welcome to the Dame.
  4.  
  5. The Digital Audio Multilayering & Editing program initially made for
  6. the ST and now adapted to run on a Falcon without the need for external
  7. hardware.
  8.  
  9. Install:
  10. The Dame does not use ,for flexibility- and speed-reasons ,
  11. any filestructure to record music.
  12. It records music from the last partition of any harddisk-unit to
  13. the end  of the harddisk , so , make sure the last partitions of all 
  14. connected units are free. When you first start-up the program it will
  15. ask you if you want to install the program on a fresh unit. 
  16. After this, it might sometimes be necessary to do an "Unsplit unit" (in
  17. the menu "Disk").
  18. You can use up to 8 units.
  19.  
  20. !!The internal harddisk in the Falcon is unit nr 4, scsi-unit 4 can
  21. therefore not be used.
  22. This version 3.2 can use 7 external scsi-harddisks of up to 1 Gb each.
  23. Bigger harddisks are supported but only 1 Gb is used.

  25. Technical:
  26. Connect a line-level signal to the microphone-input of the Falcon the
  27. following way:
  28.             +  ____
  29. line-out --||--|  |-- Mic-input  The resistor has a value of 47K
  30.                ¯¯¯¯              The Condensator is 10 uF/16V

  32. Set Input gain of the control-panel at 3. This way you can connect
  33. standard line-levels of CD-players or DAT-recorders to the Falcon.
  34. For those of you who are interested: the DC-offset of the A/D-converter
  35. is filtered-out by the DSP and the Bass-boost of the Headphone-output is
  36. compensated by a digital filter in the DSP.

  38. Software:
  39.  
  40. Dame_clr.prg is the color-version. "Set my colors to your own personal
  41. taste in the control panel (Set video to  16 colors or higher). But
  42. don't make me look like a christmastree".
  43. The required resolution is min 640*400 (VGA,video,overscan,etc).
  44.  
  45. Use the right mouse-button to show toolboxes.
  46.  
  47. Arrows in icons always stand for writing information (or recording).
  48.  
  49. ~~ in icons always stands for reading information (or playing).
  50.  
  51. The total available recording-space of a unit is divided into 
  52. sectors of 1.5 seconds each. So, the unit can be compared to a long tape.
  53. For the musicians among you (like me).
  54.  
  55. The door is always exit or exit and restore.
  56.  
  57. The thumb is always Ok and accept the choice.
  58.  
  59. The [Return]-key on your keyboard is always Ok and accept (although you
  60. seldomly use your thumb to press [Return]).
  61.  
  62. 3D-buttons only work from TOS-version 4.02 and higher.
  63.  
  64. The decimal keyboard: [0] is play until end,[Enter] is play workblock,
  65. [.] is Stop.
  66.  
  67. Second click on a play- or record-icon is Stop.
  68.  
  69. The space-bar: play current take.
  70.  
  71. Use click and/or double-click on all buttons or texts to change, drag
  72. or show things....
  73.  
  74. Use the left and right mouse-button to step through the sectors when 
  75. the mouse is a left-right arrow.
  76. [Insert] is go to first possible, [Clr Home] is go to last possible.
  77. (Not very logical, but notice the keyboard lay-out).

  79. Use the up/down and left/right cursor-keys on your keyboard to single-step
  80. the slide or rectangle that the mouse is pointing to.

  82. Use the following sequence to record and play simultaneously:
  83. pause(pistol) / record / play. If the chosen range is stereo, the
  84. left channel will be recorded and the right channel will be played.
  85. If mono, the chosen range will be played at the right output-channel and 
  86. the left input-channel is recorded in the chosen range.
  87.  
  88. A Take is a defined piece of music on your harddisk.
  89.  
  90. You can give takes a name in the take-list ( LIST ) or define takes
  91. "on the fly" with the "Flagplay"-icon ([Return]=define start,
  92. [Space]=define end and next start).
  93.  
  94. Insert takes in the playlist with the according icon.
  95. Or use the [Return]- [Insert]- and [Delete]- keys when you're in
  96. the playlist.
  97.  
  98. Use the alphanumeric keys on your keyboard to select takes you
  99. have given a name.
  100.  
  101. You can use "Legend" to edit the unique parameters of each take 
  102. such as the eq and volume in the playlist, 54 extra characters, Midi-
  103. parameter changes etc.

  105. The sample-frequency is 50 kHz or 34 kHz. No compromises, the A/D/A-
  106. converter is not really bad, but not good enough, as it is.
  107.  
  108. All takes can be mixed, edited, effectuated(?) with All takes........
  109.  
  110. Effects are, for the moment, non-realtime. These effects were initially
  111. made for the ST. DSP-effects will be available soon.
  112.  
  113. The filter-program now has realtime monitoring of the effect for
  114. accuracies to 1.5 at 50 kHz sample-rate if you click on "Draw actual filter".
  115. The DSP is too slow to use higher accuracies.
  116. Actually, the DSP56001 is a bit of an old-fashioned type.
  117.  
  118. You can have a maximum of 96 takes per unit (or 8*96 with "Split unit")
  119.  
  120. To mix a piece of music, create(delete) an empty (Master) space anywhere 
  121. on your disk where you can mix All takes as many times as you like and 
  122. even remove or change an already mixed take afterwards: The Multilayering.
  123.  
  124. The "Pan" and "Vol"-slides are only used when you are mixing takes.
  125.  
  126. The [Tab]-key shows the Play-list. With the playlist you can "soft-edit"
  127. with All takes of All connected harddisks.
  128.  
  129. This share-ware version can only play a maximum of 2 to 4 takes in 
  130. the playlist.
  131.  
  132. The "pro"-version Playlist can contain a virtually unlimited number
  133. of takes. It is said that someone once made a Dame-playlist with over
  134. 600 items in it (and not just for fun).

  136. If you have closed the Edit-window: choose "Set unit" to show it again.
  137.  
  138. If I have forgotten something (the other 1001 possibilities) I'M sorry.
  139. You have got a lot of instruments in the software , it is up to you
  140. what to do with it.

  142. The Dame is not an insult to the intelligence of the user.
  143.  
  144. Software-availability:
  145. Dame without the playlist and archiving functions is shareware and
  146. can be copied freely. If you're using this program please pay
