Quick ST II version 2.2 is $19.95 U.S. or less at most Atari dealers,
and is also available directly from Branch Always Software.
The Quick ST II Demo contains 5 files:
QST22DMM.PRG - Quick ST 2.2 for monochrome/Moniterm monitors
QST22DMC.PRG - Quick ST 2.2 for color/ISAC monitors
QST2CSTD.ACC (can also be renamed to QST2CSTD.PRG)
- Quick ST 2.2 Desktop Customizer Demo accessory/program
QST22DEM.DOC - this text file
QSTIICHA.DOC - the Quick ST II Challenge
Note: If for some reason you do not have all of these files and want to get
the complete demo, read the Quick ST II Challenge file.
We know that you want to run the demo as soon as possible, so do the
following:
- format a blank floppy disk
- create a new folder called AUTO
- copy the files QST22DMM.PRG and QST22DMC.PRG to the AUTO folder
- copy the file QST2CSTD.ACC to the main directory
- turn the computer off, then on
If you are not familiar with formatting disks, creating folders, or copying
files, please consult your Atari ST computer user's manual. The demo can
also be installed on any hard disk. Obviously, do NOT format your hard
disk. Just create the AUTO folder and copy the files, then reboot.
When the computer boots, the Quick ST II Demo will display a message. Press
any key to continue booting, and in a few seconds the desktop will appear.
If you are in medium or monochrome resolution, the desktop will not simply
contain a green or grey background. It will display the Quick ST II Demo
logo, as well as some information about Quick ST II. Use the Desktop
Customizer accessory to change the background back to normal or to install
a different desktop picture.
Once you have satisfied your urge to run the demo, come back and continue
reading this file for more information about the demo. See you soon!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are back. By now, you must be wondering why we are giving away a demo as
fantastic as Quick ST II. At Branch Always Software, we believe in
providing quality Atari ST software at the lowest possible price. That
means that we do not charge $50 or $100 for software. We do not take out
two page advertizing spreads in magazines. We do not package our software
in fancy packaging to try to get you to buy our software on impulse. We
just want to sell you our software because we know that you NEED our
software.
We have been in business for a year now, and our programmers have been
developing software for the Atari ST for almost 5 years. Quick ST II is the
result of 3 years of effort by several programmers and many, many testers.
We believe that Quick ST II is one of the finest and most useful pieces of
software available. That is why we price it so low. We want each and every
single Atari ST user to buy Quick ST II. We could have priced it at $50
(like our competition), or even $100, and hoped to have higher profits but
fewer sales. We know that Atari ST users are not rolling in cash. And high
software prices encourage piracy. We believe that by pricing Quick ST II at
$19.95, we are making it almost too inexpensive to pirate. For $19.95, you
are then entitled to future upgrades of the software, to provide your
input, and to know that you are helping to keep the ST software market
alive. PLEASE, DO NOT PIRATE SOFTWARE!
We trust you, the Atari ST user, to make the correct choice and buy our
software. That is why this demo is being made available. We want you to try
the software, on your computer, with your software, and not have to judge
it solely on magazine ads, or reviews. The demo contains ALMOST all of the
features of Quick ST II (version 2.2). It speeds up GEM, and GDOS, and
text, and scrolling. It runs on the 68000 and 68030 based STs. It runs in
color and monochrome. It runs on Moniterm monitors. This is the fastest
demo of any software accelerator ever!
The demo has some differences from the real Quick ST II package. Keep this
in mind when running the demo:
- the demo requires over 100K of memory. Quick ST II can be configured
to use as little as 16K to 28K of memory.
- the demo pauses when booting and asks you to press a key. The real
Quick ST II does not require this.
- the demo has a built-in default desktop picture and cannot be
configured to boot with a different picture. The real Quick ST II can.
- the demo of the Desktop Customizer does not allow for the saving of
the current configuration to disk. The real Quick ST II does.
- the demo does not suppot I/O redirection. The real Quick ST II does.
- the real Quick ST II runs even faster than the demo. Registered
owners of Quick ST II will soon be receiving a newsletter in the mail
announcing even better things for Quick ST in 1991.
- the real Quick ST II also comes with other utilities, including the
MonSTEr high resolution monitor emulator, the real Quick Index, the
Quick View file viewer, and contains more fill patterns and pictures.
Please be aware that the very popular Quick Index utility is NOT public
domain. We realize that it is a handy thing to have, but it must not be
copied or redistributed. We have received many reports of Quick Index 2.1
being pirated in Germany at a recent computer show to benchmark the TT
computers, even by Atari Germany itself, and this very sad indeed. Earlier
shareware versions of Quick Index (versions 1.0 thru 1.5) may be copied,
but if you use them, you are expected to honour our request to buy the
latest version (by buying Quick ST II).
Problems
--------
In case you run into any difficulties running the Quick ST II Demo, here
are some useful hints:
- when using the Moniterm monitor or other screen driver, make sure
the screen driver loads before the Quick ST II Demo.
- similarly, when using GDOS, make sure GDOS loads first.
- if using DC Desktop, Easel ST, or the Diablo emulator, make sure
that those programs load after the Quick ST II Demo.
- do not attempt to install another version of Quick ST or Turbo ST at
the same time. They simply won't work together.
- if something is still going wrong, it is probably a problem with
another desk acessory or AUTO folder program. First, disable the other
desk accessories and AUTO folder programs, then re-enable them one by
one until the problem occurs again. In many cases, changing the order
in which Quick ST II loads relative to the other programs will solve
the problem. In most cases, the Quick ST II demo can simply load last.
- do not attempt to run QST22DMM.PRG or QST22DMC.PRG from the desktop.
These files can only be installed from the AUTO folder.
- the Desktop Customizer has an option to temporarily disable Quick
ST's screen acceleration. You can use this to see the speed
differences with and without the Quick ST II Demo. However, for best
results, always re-enable it before exiting a program or running a
program.
- the Desktop Customizer can also run as a regular program, so that it
does not have to use up a desk accessory slot.
- Quick ST II is not compatible with the public domain program
ICONDESK. It is also not compatible with the program Gemini (a public
domain desktop replacement) when it comes to running text based
programs inside of windows. May we recommend using Double Click
Software's desktop replacement DC Desktop, or Gribnif's Neodesk. These
programs are not public domain.
If problems still persist, please contact us, either by mail, email, or by
calling us at 206-885-5893. If you call and an answering machine answes,
please leave your name, phone number, the type of ST you are using, the
type of monitor you are using, the amount of memory you have available, and
a description of the problem. This will allow us to investigate the problem
before calling you back.
Enjoy the Quick ST II Demo, and we hope to have you become one of our
customers in the future. Please distribute the Quick ST II Demo to other ST
users, and if possible, demonstrate it to your local user group. We have
user group discounts available so please call if interested.
