  13. In this quick guide their may be references to Company or (C)opyrighted 
  14. names. This is to inform you that these are documented, only in the actual 
  15.  manual

  23. Copy the program OUTSIDE on  to your Hard disk in the AUTO folder. 
  24. Try to place OUTSIDE  ahead of any other program in the root directory. 
  25. To check the order of your programs in the AUTO folder. turn off the 
  26. sorting option on your desktop.

  30. Before you use OUTSIDE you need to configure OUTSIDE to your specific 
  31. hardware. For this you use the program OUTCONF. After you have started 
  32. your program (Note: The OUTSIDE disk has to be in the A:drive), you will 
  33. be prompted with a file selector in which you can choose which OUTSIDE 
  34. file you wish to configure. After that you may configure OUTSIDE.

  38. SWAP PARTITION

  42. First you will be prompted with all the harddisk partitions which you may 
  43. use as a swap partition. OUTCONF will identify drive letters and its re-
  44. spective capacity  (in Megabytes) which you may then use as virtual memo-
  45. ry.For every free megabyte in your sy-stem memory you can virtually mana-
  46. ge one megabyte in your swap-partition. Select your swap-partition through 
  47. a simple mausclick.

  51. It needs to be said that no data may be written on to the swap-partition  
  52. as long as OUTSIDE is active. The program will automatically prevent any 
  53. such actions. This drawback is necessary as it needs to be prevented that 
  54. data on the harddisk which now has some of your system memory gets 
  55. overwritten. If done otherwise the system will crash. If the swap-partition 
  56. contains files then the FAT needs to be absolutely error-free before you 
  57. start OUTSIDE, otherwise no guarantee can be made about the safety of 
  58. those files in the swap-partition.

  62. If OUTSIDE was inactive then the swap-partition can be used as a regular 
  63. harddisk partition. After every new restart, OUTSIDE will reassess the free 
  64. memory and how it will be managed.

  68. BLOCK TRANSFER

  72. The option called Seitengröße is the size of the blocks transferred in and 
  73. out of the Virtual Memory. Generally for Falcon and TT the size can be 32 
  74. Kbyte blocks which will also give zou the maximum possible performance 
  75. and this kind of blockrate is guaranteed anyway in the PMMU.

  79. However not all programs work with such a block transfer rate, also in 
  80. some cases the data transfer is quicker with a smaller blockrate, depending 
  81. on how many programs you are using simultaneously. It would be a good 
  82. idea to experiment.

  86. MAXIMUM VIRTUAL MEMORY

  90. The maximum set virtual memory is 512 Megabytes. However if you do not 
  91. have that much in your partition that and it is set to more, then OUTSIDE 
  92. will automatically recognize this and change the memory accordingly.

  96. ALTERNATIVE MEMORY

  100. This option is only important if you don't have TT Fastram, eg. a TT with 
  101. ST Ram or a Falcon.

  105. This is a very special RAM and it is used in conjunction with the Virtual 
  106. Memory, this makes the transfer a little faster if it was only ram though 
  107. your harddrive. First OUTSIDE could only use TT Fastram because it was 
  108. suitably fast, however this has changed. Now OUTSIDE can transform part 
  109. of your ST Ram into Alternative Memory as well, however it has to be said 
  110. that the performance is a little slower.

  114. Whatever quantity you take as Alternative RAM get's used in the actual 
  115. Virtual RAM and is accounted for as well in other words if you use 2 Me-
  116. gabytes of your real RAM as Alternative and your Virtual RAM is 30 Mega-
  117. bytes you have a total of 32 Megabytes of RAM, according to your System, 
  118. and in practical sense too. SO basically your RAM and the Virtual RAM in-
  119. termingle. But you still require a minimum of 2, megabytes of ST RAM to 
  120. work with to run your system in. So if you had a 4 Megabyte falcon, you 
  121. may use 2 Megabytes of it as alternative. Same goes for the TT, however if 
  122. you have TT Fastram, then it doesn't matter anyway.

  126. ROM INTO RAM WITH OR WITHOUT COPY PROTECTION

  130. You can also select in this option if you wish to copy protect your Virtual 
  131. Rom or not. There is a program called ROM Speed which will copy your 
  132. ROM into RAM making it a little quicker. If you have a TT it get's copied 
  133. into TT Fastram increasing the ROM to 30%, on a Falcon up to 7%. You 
  134. have the option to protect that part of your RAM, so it cannot be changed 
  135. during the course of your work.

  139. COMBATIBILITY MODE

  143. This option will allow you to transform your Data Transfer from 32 wide 
  144. bit address to 24 (ST Compatible), as there are some programs aroud that 
  145. will just not tolerate 32 bit wide addresses.

  149. If you wish to use your ST Cmopatibility mode with TT Ram then the TT 
  150. Fastram has to be empty before use and maybe you might have to use the 
  151. program OUTFLAGS to configure OUTSIDE so that it forces it to run in 
  152. ST Ram.

  156. MEDIUM VERRIEGELN

  160. This option allows you to protect you from taking out your removable drive 
  161. if you use a removable data media. (e.g. Syquest Drives). Once you have se-
  162. lected this option you are unable to change your Removable Cartridge until 
  163. you run the program UNLOCK, after that UNOCK will automatically reset. 
  164. HDDRIVER comes along with the OUTSIDE Package, and it is possible to 
  165. configure HDDRIVER so that this whole procedure is done automatically.

  173. Once you have done all the configuring you are now ready to use OUTSI-
  174. DE. Anytime you wish to reconfigure it just run OUTCONF again. However

  183. Outside has many programs that come along with it to assist the usage of 
  184. a Virtual Memory Manager as well as a completely own and new designed 
  185. Hard Drive Manager. It is not necessary to use it, and in the U.S.A. ICD is 
  186. already a very popular standard. However in the Manual there is an exact 
  187. description of how to use it.
