Quantum ELS with The Link: Problem and Solutions for drives made in 1992.
The following information is for owners of "The Link", a SCSI host adapter
for Atari ST computers, and Quantum ELS series hard drives with firmware
older than version 4.05. ELS drives with the newer firmware have not been
shipped by Quantum as of this writing and probably won't be until sometime
in 1993. Firmware version 4.05 or higher is required to disable parity on
an ELS drive. Parity is not supported with The Link. Unfortunately a TT,
a Falcon, or an ICD host adapter which does support parity is also required
in order to disable it so be sure to have one of these available. The
following ICD host adapters do support parity: Advantage ST, Advantage
Plus ST, AdSCSI ST, AdSCSI Plus ST. The other models do not.
Included with this file are a special version of BOOTFIX.TOS from ICD and
two other files from Quantum which will allow those with the knowledge and
proper equipment to make their own 4.05 ROMs. ELS_S405.HEX is the 4.05
firmware code in Intel Hex format. ELS_S405.BIN is a binary image of the
firmware ROM (binary format). These should have a checksum of $2E00 and be
programmed in to 27C512 32 pin PLCC EPROMs or OTP EPROMs. Quantum has used
Atmel AT27C512R-15JC OTP EPROMs so 150ns is probably more than sufficient.
An alternative is to call Quantum, explain that you need parity disabled on
your ELS drive, and tell them that you need new firmware of version 4.05 or
greater to support this. In the USA you can call 900-740-4433 to request
new ROMs. Warning! You will be automatically charged for this call and I
am not sure of the rate. If you are "blocked" from 900 numbers, try
408-944-0410.
Once you have the new ROM, carefully replace the old ROM, which is the only
IC in a socket on the ELS drive PCB. Then connect the drive to a SCSI port
which does support parity, boot the computer and run the new BOOTFIX.TOS.
After that, the drive will permanently have parity disabled and work with
The Link. Our hopes are that dealers or distributors will offer this
service to their customers since they will have better access to the
required equipment.
Thanks for supporting our products and good luck!
