Areamanager version 1.2 Released 11-12-1991
==========================================================================
The multizone areafix programm
Copyright '91 by Erno Meffert
Documentation Marcel Sacksen
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The archive you just unpacked should contain the following files:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
AREAMGR.PRG = the main programm, to be run after you import your mail
AREAMGR.CTL = the controlfile, containing your areas and passwords
AREAMGR.DOC = the file you are reading now
USERDOC.TXT = the documentation for your users
Everybody is encouraged to copy and spread this programm
Areamanager is written to enable nodes and points to connect and
disconnect different echomail areas at their uplink. It works by
means of a simple netmail message to Areamanager at their boss' or hub's
system.
Allthough the programm has been tested for a reasonable period, I can not
give you garantee on anything else than the discspace it will take on your
harddisk ;-) It seems to work OK on my system though.
How it works
============
Everytime areamgr.prg is started it will scan your netmailarea for messages
adressed to itself. If a message is found the programm will look at the
from-field, to find out where the message came from, then it will look at
the subject-field for a validated password. It checks these fields with
the info in your areamgr.ctl file. If all turns out to be OK the programm
will read the message text. If it finds a valid areaname, it will add the
address of the sender to the area in your areas.bbs, OR, if the areaname
in the message text is preceeded by a - it will remove the address of
the sender from that area in your areas.bbs.
Finally areamanager will send a netmail message to your downlink,
containing all changed and available echomail areas, at your system.
It is possible to configure areamanager in a way that certain nodes can
only connect to specified areas, for instance to keep points out of your
sysop areas, this works really simple: after any of the Areanames in your
Areamgr.ctl you can put any character (A-Z) to define a "character-level"
for this area(s), only users with that character specified in the
password-line can connect to the area(s).
If the "character-level" (excuse the term, couldn't think of any better
way to describe it ;-)) does not fit to the user, the area(s) are not
even printed in the report-message.
See the Installation section, and sample .CTL file for more detail on how
this works.
Installation
============
Place AREAMGR.PRG and AREAMGR.CTL in the same directory, areamgr looks at
the environment variable "mailer" to find it's way around.
Edit the sample AREAMGR.CTL controlfile according to your address(es),
and your own AREAS.BBS
Available commands:
-------------------
#Netmail Give the complete path to your netmailarea (including area
number, no extension)
#Logfile Give the complete path and filename.ext of your systemlog
#Report Followed by "on" or "off", either turns the report function
on or off. (apart from this global command all users can
choose themselves if they want the report or not, by adding
%list or %nolist to the areafix messagetext)
#Address can be used several times to specify all your addresses
(give the complete 4D address e.g. 2:281/801.0)
#Answer Give the name Areamanager must look for in the netmail
messages. (e.g. Areafix, Echofix, Areamgr or whatever you
would like areamgr to listen to, there's no default, this
name must be specified!)
#Password Followed by the 4D address, the areafixpassword,
characterlevels, and ; to end the line
All areas can be assigned to a character-level for instance:
F (for Fidonetmail) N (for NeST areas) S (for sysop areas)
thus you can determine for every node which groups of
mailareas he/she may link-up to.
#TEXT Followed by a character(s) and a text string.
The users "character-level" defines if the text is written
to the report message or not. (See sample controlfile)
These commands are followed by a list of available areas from your BBS.
Format to use:
N_TEST N ; Nest test message area
BINKLEY.ST F ; International Binkley support area
SYSOPS.028 S ; Dutch sysop area
ATARI.028 F ; Nederlandse Atari ST area
