Introduction
^^^^^^^^^^^^
Point software? What kind of funny thing is that? Do I need it? Is it
worth something to me?
We'll clear up all these questions before we get to the technical
section.
When you're online with a normal terminal program and connected to a Box,
then you always have to do a number of operations:
* Wait for an answer from the remote computer
* Key-in User-Id * Key-in Password (if you can remember it)
* Read all messages
* Up and Down-load files
Ok, the first few points you can automate using a Script File, but you'll
have problems with the last two: messages and files. If you're one of
those whose just subscribe to magazines and don't want to know what's
behind the stage, then it's best that you delete this software and throw
away this documentation and be happy that you're not hooked on Fido getting
one of the Fidiots. Also, when you're satisfied with your single "BLABLA"
Area and not interested in other Mail then forget the whole thing and
continue to be online with your terminal program.
But, when you try like crasy everyday to get connected with the box of
your choice so that you can get hold of the latest rumours, then the
Fido Point Software is perfect for you.
You'll probably noticed that your Boss has very many Areas (or boards) to
chose from, divided into different areas of interest (sure, someone with
an IBM PC isn't interested in how many bombs an Atari displays). That's
why the different "pin boards" were created, so you don't have to
struggle through all the messages that exist in Areas which don't
interest anybody. Have you tried the following: while online, and while
the telephone cost keep going up, read a message, stop and think about
answering it (then maybe typing in an answer), read the next message,
stop and think about...
When you're an "old timer" you've probably had the idea of doing all
processing via a Script file, shove your messages into a buffer file as
they scroll by, use an editor offline to read everything, and then during
your next call typing in your answers. It's a pretty roundabout way of
getting things done, huh?
Now you've got it. Thats just what Fido Point Software is for. Think
about the following: You have a mini-mailbox which contains only those
Areas you're interested in. And when you have the programs which would
send you the latest mails to read... And THAT is what you get with Fido
Point Software.
Your favorite mail box (lovingly called BOSS) sends to you all new mails,
compressed to save memory and telephone cost, from the Areas which you
requested. Because your favorite box doesn't want to live from charity
he waits till you call, using a special program, and then sends your
mails at your cost to you. And you don't even have to enter your user-id
and password because the software automatically does it for you. You can't
get more comfortable, can you?.
When you've received your mail packets the software takes over the
responsibility of decompressing them and of moving them into the correct
Areas (folders), just like your Boss, your mini-mailbox is divided into
Areas of interest.
All unpacking and distributing of messages into the different Areas is
done offline, that means, Ma Bell doesn't make a penny after you've
received your mail - there's no connection. Now you can peacefully read
your mail and take your time about answering (refer to your Mail Editor
documentation).
When you finished, your software creates a mail packet for your Boss and
the next time you call up your mail will be sent out, compressed of
course. As a reward, you'll receive new mail, if any is there.
As you can see, Fido Point Software pays for itself under the following
conditions:
- You call the same MailBox regularly and access the same Areas.
- You're interested in communication and information and not just in
up or downloading the newest files.
- You're interested in many of the Areas offered.
(An extract of Werner Berghofer's "What is a Point", 2:310/2)
Fidonet is a private, international computer network which contains
at this time (Nov. '90) about 8000 computers ("Nodes"). FidoNet was
founded by former Apple system programmer Tom Jennings and a friend.
The first Node, Fido #1, was installed on DEC Rainbow. Two months
later FidoNet had grown to more than 60 computers.
Although most computers in this network operate under the
MS-DOS operating system FidoNet is not a synonym for MS-DOS
mailboxes but defines the nature and manner on how over a asynchron
modem messages are exchanged ("Protocal") and the internal structure
of the messages. FidoNet doesn't have any professional ambitions,
it is run solely by unpaid amateurs.
Originally Tom Jennings had one basic principal which he wanted
all participants to take to heart:
"Thou shalt not excessively annoy others.
Thou shalt not be too easily annoyed."
FidoNet is separated into Zones, Regions, Networks and Nodes.
A Fidonet Zone is a continent, a Region is a country or a state, while
a Network can be a state or county. The smallest unit on FidoNet is
the separate computers, the FidoNet Nodes. Every Node has its own
unmistakable numeric designation, a "Matrix Address". This is what
different Matrix Addresses look like:
1:135/20
2:310/12.0
310/2
3:748/56
4:61/12.1@fidonet
The general format of a FidoNet address is
Zone:Network/Node.Point (4-D-Address or four dimensional address).
Now an optional part of the address is the "Domain", which is
placed after the numeric part of the address. An obligatory Domain
definition doesn't exist at this time.
At this time the FidoNet Topography is defined as follows:
Zone 1: USA, Zone 2: Europe, Zone 3: Australia, Zone 4: South
America, Zone 5: Africa, and Zone 6: Asia. Zones are made up
of Regions, Regions are made up of Networks which are made up of
Nodes. Zone numbers are always one digit, Regions numbers contain
two digits, and Network numbers are generally three or four digits
long. Nodes numbers can be up to five digits. A Node is normally
equal to "Point Zero".
The full Address Format, Zone:Net/Node.Point, is not binding:
if the FidoNet Address Zone and/or Point is missing then the local
Zone is assumed as default while zero is assumed as the Point. When
in Europe (Zone 2) the address 2:310/2.0 is identical to 310/2.
PART 1
SUCCESS, THE FAST WAY
Author: Erich Jeckl
Translator: Frank Bell
Nothing is more frustrating then the endless study of extensive,
complicated documentation. Therefore Part 1 was created so that you can
become an active FidoNet Point the fast and easy way.
It is very important and useful when using FidoNet to first get experience
as a Point.
That's why the first part of this documentation emphasizes getting started
as a Point.
The following, minimal configuration is necessary:
- An Atari ST, STE, or TT with at least 1 megabyte memory
- A harddisk with 2 to 3 available megabytes
- A modem
and the following programs:
- BTS - the shell, which makes an installation easy
- LED - the message Editor
- ACS Package - containing Come_in, Go_Out, and Tidy_Up
- Compression software - ARC, LHARC, ZOO, and UNZip
- BinkleyTerm/ST 2.40 - the Mailer
- An ASCII text editor
How do you get hold of this software?
The ACS Package is Shareware; I don't think we have to go into what
Shareware is, do we?
For those that don't know, Shareware is not Public Domain (PD)!
You can try Shareware out if it fits your needs, but if you use it
then you should help the programmer out financially.
This Demo version can be downloaded from many mailboxes or direct
from the programmer: Roland Bohn. The programs are purposely
incomplete and at times may not behave as wanted, as long as you
haven't payed and got your serialnumber.
Just the ACS Package took the programmer, Roland Bohn, a full year
of development, almost as a full time job.
When you send in your Shareware payment to Roland you'll receive
your Serialnumber, will be registered, become eligible for updates
and what could be the most important:
You can, as a registered user, ask the Programer questions about ACS
because not all features are extensively documented. It is possible
that you misunderstand something, so it would be a great help if you
know that there's someone who might be able to explain you some things.
Where should you send your Shareware payment:
The best way is to send me your Donation (together with your Homeaddress) to
the following address in Germany:
Roland Bohn
Dueppelstr. 25
D-4630 Bochum 1
Germany
The Shareware-Donation for Users within Europe is DM 50. For Users outside
of Europe it is US$ 40.
All Users should send their Shareware payment in Banknotes (i mean Cash)
via registered mail, insured, to the above address. This is most likely the
easiest and securest method. I've never had problems with that till now.
If somebody has too many money or doesn't want to send me the Donation in
Cash, for whatever reason, then he can transfer it to the following account:
Roland Bohn
Account No.: 101306710
Bank No.: 430 500 01
Sparkasse Bochum, Germany
It happened often that new Users from foreign Countries transferred theyr
Donation to my account but the Bank kept 20 DM for taxes. Please remember
this and add this difference to the Donation or pay yourself the taxes for
the transferation.
Good, now that we gotten that out of the way and you're the owner of the
above programs we can get started.
First you should create a folder on your harddisk (it wouldn't be a bad
idea if you name it FIDO or POINT).
Copy the following programs into this folder:
- BTS.PRG, BTS1.RSC, BTS2.RSC
- LED.PRG and LED.RSC
- Come_In.TTP
- Go_Out.TTP
- Tidy_Up.TTP
- BT240.TTP and BINKLEY.LNG
- A text editor
In the FIDO folder create the following folders (they'll be explained
later):
- DOWNLOAD
- MSGS
- INBOUND
- OUTBOUND
- PACKER
In the last folder, PACKER, copy in the following packer programs, these
programs are, at this time, the most widely used compression programs
available for the Atari ST:
- ARC.TTP
- UNARJ.TTP
- LHARC.TTP
- ZOO.TTP
- STZIP.PRG
With these programs in your PACKER folder it doesn't matter what
compression program your Boss uses. You're ready for everything.
Ok, are you done? Now we can get on with installing the Fido Point
Software.
- Click on BTS.PRG (double click of course)
An error message dialog box will be displayed informing you
that the BTS.PRM file doesn't exist, don't worry: that's what
we're creating now! Press "RETURN" or click on the "OK" box.
The shell program is loaded and you'll get the following Menu line:

The necessary BINKLEY.CFG options for BinkleyTerm/ST are created here.
SYSOP: Enter your name here.
SYSTEM: Pick out a system name. This text will be shown to your
Boss when you're polling there.
For example: "Here is Point #99".
ADDRESS: For example: 2:241/5811.99@fidonet
Now I have to explain that last one:
As a Point you need a Boss, of course, you have to be able
to call somebody (Poll). The first part of the address
is his, in the above example: 2:241/5811.
Every Point has a number, which is separated from the rest
of his address with a decimal point (Point, got it?).
Again, in the above example "2:241/5811.99".
After the "at" sign is the NetWork name: we, as a FidoNet
Point, belong to FidoNet. Other Nets can also be entered
here, for example AlterNet or EggNet. But we can also leave
it blank as it's not necessary.
PRIVATENET: Here's where we enter our Fake Address, that is, the
PointNet address of your Boss. For example: 5811.
Why a Fake Address? Well, thats higher FidoNet mathematics
and we'll get to it later. For now just enter the number
that your Boss gave you.
BOSSPASSWORD: Here you can type in the password your Boss gives you.
Your password can't be longer then six characters. Boss'
software will recognize you via your password an let you
into his system.
BOSSPHONE: I really don't think I have to explain this one.

What the individual Flags mean can be read about in the BinkleyTerm 2.40
documentation. Here we're going to set up the necessary BINKLEY.CFG file.
As Points all we have to do is click on the following three boxes
NOCOLLIDE NOZONES and NEWNODELIST
to activate what we need. We'll leave this dialog box with OK.
When you click on the Mailer-Paths, you will see the Path Configuration Box:

+--------------------------------------------+
LOGLEVEL: Here we control how much information is written to the log
file, lets try 5 (1=little is written to the log file,
5=just about everything is written to the log file).
As of here you only have to use the mouse, just click on the underline
and a file selector will be displayed so that the correct file paths can
be selected.
MOUSE CLICK (a fast double click)
|
|
LOGFILE: _V__ Enter here the name of your log file, try LOGFILE.LOG.
This file will contain a protocol of everything your Fido
Point Software does. You can look into this file with a
normal text editor and see what your programs have done.
Careful, this file will be longer every time its written
to. You should periodically delete it.
NODELIST: You don't need a Nodelist as a Point, because you only
call your Boss. But just for the fun of it you can enter
the path for a future Nodelist.
What's a Nodelist?
Oh, we haven't gotten around to that yet, have we? A
Nodelist is sort of a telephone book in which every Node,
worldwide, is listed with its telephone number. The
Nodelist is an ASCII text file and is updated weekly, lets
see Ma Bell do that. In this form though its not very
useful, it has to be "compiled": made machine readable.
Using the File Selector box you have to set the file path
for your NodeList Folder. For example: \FIDO\NODELIST\.
DOWNLOADS: Create a path that points to the \FIDO\DOWNLOAD\, as a
Point you don't need it, believe me.
NETMAIL: Here's the file path where your Netmails should land. Its
important that the filename is also present. The correct
way in our case is \FIDO\MSGS\NETMAIL. Note that the
filename extension isn't used.
NETFILE: The path should point to the INBOUND folder. This is
where files which your Boss sent you, or files which you've
asked for via his FileList (technically: Requested) end up
once they been received via BinkleyTerm/ST.
An example: \FIDO\INBOUND\.
HOLD: This path points to your OUTBOUND folder: \FIDO\OUTBOUND\.
For now that's all you need. Double check everything, if its correct
then click on OK.
Now we can setup the Modem Strings:

and my init string is "AT&D3&C1S0=0|" (without the quotes).
PREFIX: My modem uses "ATD".
SUFFIX: My modem doesn't need anything here.
ANSWER: My modem doesn't need anything here either.
BUSY: I use "AT&D0M0H1|" but "AT&H1|" is used by others.
My modem doesn't need anything else but maybe yours does. Check out
your modem handbook if you have further questions.

Here's where the ACS.CFG file is going to be created. This file is
needed by all programs in the ACS Package.
The new Version of ACS requires a Serialnumber to work properly. You will
receive your Serialnumber after you sent your donation. You have to type
it in correctly at the Serial-Statement in this dialog.
ExtraExpArea: This is only used by Nodes. But to be on the safe side
install this: \FIDO\MSGS\EXTRAEXP.
BadMsgs: Doesn't sound too good, does it? A little later you're
going to install AREAS. Areas are something like pinboards,
areas of interest, or something like that. Your Boss has
a list of Areas from which you can take your pick and order
from him. How they are ordered comes a little later too.
Normally your Boss packs new messages from these Areas and
has them ready and waiting for your next Poll where
BinkleyTerm/ST will automatically import them for you.
Then Come_In calls the packer program which unpacks them
and moves individual messages into the prepared Areas, just
like the postman sorts mail into the correct mailboxes.
But when a message doesn't belong any place or for some
reason it can't be moved into the correct Area its placed
in "BadMsgs" from where you can read it and/or move it to
the correct Area.
An example of the path is: \FIDO\MSGS\BADMSGS.
AvailAreaList: Only for Nodes. (Explained in Part 2.)
EchoList: Only for Nodes.
FileFixReportArea: Only for Nodes.
I'm sure you remember that at the beginning we created a folder named
PACKER. This folder contains ARC, ARJ, LHARC, ZIP, AND ZOO. Now its
necessary to inform the ACS Package where it can find the programs and
which ones to use.

HINT: In this example the Arguments for LHarc refer to the Versions 1.13xx.
If somebody still uses the LHarc recompiled by Jon Webb, he has to
use it as the ARCer is used. That means that the same Arguments should
be used and that the Extra-Command Flag is turned off.
You can also use the mouse to select the paths. Just click on the
lines to display the fileselector and from there the correct paths.
ArcImp: When your Boss packs your Packets with an ARCer the program
entered here is used: \FIDO\PACKER\ARC.TTP x. (That 'x' should
be entered after at least on space).
And the same applies to the following packers.
ArcExp: --+--> Here the message that you export to your Boss will be
LzhExp: --+ packed using the appropriate compression program. The
ZipExp: --+ process, that is the installation is the same as importing
ZooExp: --+ with the exception of "ARJ", which doesn't exist yet.
When everything looks good then click on Ok.
Now click on the ACS Flags Button (lower left hand corner) to install the
Flags for each Program.

Within the ACS Package we have so called Keywords with which you can
control certain functions of the indicated program. The control is
passed to the programs in that you just click on the Keyword, thus
inverting it, and activating it.
In Part 3 of this manual you'll find a description of all of these
parameters. But first I think we can be satisfied with those items which
affect a Point.
Again, one after the other.
Come_In
=======
You need Come_In to process the mail packets you've received from your
Boss after a Poll. Come_In calls the unpacker and moves the messages
into the correct Areas. In Fido we call this "Importing".

Tidy_Up
=======
This is one of the most complicate programs. It delete messages which
were marked for deletion (Killed) by your message editor, it removes
duplicate messages (messages which are 100% identical with each other,
its possible that your Boss sent the same messages twice), it deletes
messages which are older then NNN days(you can set the number of days,
NNN, you wish to keep your old messages, after that, they are deleted).
Nodes use Tidy_Up to scan Areas to send messages out to its Points. As a
Point you don't need this because LED does it for you. When your LED
options are set to 'Skip Sanner' your outgoing messages are copied to
the NetMail Area, the Exporter knows that and packs all outgoing
messages only from that Area.
Keywords
--------
Days:____ Enter 200 ;Your message will be removed after 200 days.
This is the default value used in all Areas
when the Areas themselves don't have any

CrashMail -------- ;Now this is a little complicated, what is
Crashmail? When you send a Netmail directly
to someone other then your BossNode we call
that Crashmail.
An example: My BossNode is 2:310/12. Now I
want to send a NetMail (matrix) to Node
2:252/101. The correct way to do this is to
send your NetMail to your Boss and he routes
it further. CrashMail is the back door. If the
destination Node allows CrashMails and you
have a NodeList installed you can call up the
Node and send your message directly to him.
CrashMail means that you can send mail
directly to the recipient, also via Air Mail.
Like in real life, Crashing via FidoNet is
expensive because you have to call your
recipient.
How that works can be read about in Part 3.
UseExtraExpArea -------- ;only for Nodes.

The big advantage of your Point is your short online time, and that
your telephone cost are kept low, because you can read and
answer your message while offline.
As mentioned earlier your Boss has all messages organized into special
Areas such as technical and Science just like some blackboards and post
office boxes. In FidoNet these boxes are called Areas.
Every Area has its own name (on some Nodes they have numbers). You can
decide which Areas you want from a list.
How do you get these Areas?
During the beginning of your Point existence your Boss is going to tell
you that you only have access to one Area; this Area could be called
LOCAL, INTERNAL, TEST, or something similar and is located only within his
PointNet. It isn't routed further. This Area, we'll call it LOCAL, is
now going to be installed.
Proceed by clicking on the Add button, located in the bottom part of the
Area dialog box. You then get the following:
+----------------------------------------------+
| Add Area |
| |
| Name : LOCAL____________ Days: 10_ |
| Path : \FIDO\MSGS\LOCAL_________________ |
| Origin : Hello Points. I'm new here.______ |
| Password: _______ |
| |
| Nodes Pass through: O Cancel Ok |
+----------------------------------------------+
Name: The name of the Area is inserted here.
In your case: LOCAL
Days: And here you can enter the number of days messages in this Area
won't be deleted. This entry has priority over the ACS.CFG
option. Lets start with 10 days.
Path: Here you can use the well known double click with the mouse to
get the File Selector. Click on the folder MSGS (don't
forget, otherwise your Area name is going to be in your root
directory) and enter the first eight characters of the Area
name (without its extension) in the file field of the File
Selector box. In our case LOCAL. If the Area name was
LOCALCHATS for example, then you would enter "LOCALCHA" or
similar (but unique).
Origin: You can pick out and use an Origin in every Area. You can also
leave this line empty and the Origin from the previous dialog
box will be used as a default Origin.
Password: For Nodes.
(Some Areas are only available using a Password.)
Passthrough: This Option is primarily for the Node, to disable some Areas.
Nodes often receives lots of Areas which they don't want to
read. Then they turn Passthrough for this Areas on, to
disable the NewMsgs-Flags within the LED.
Nodes-Button: If you click on this Button you'll get the Nodes Dialog on
the screen. Here you can enter the Nodes which are connected
to the actual Area. Please enter here your Boss' Nodenumber.
Why are there so many free Entries? Well, normally there
are many other Nodes who are connected to one Area.
As long as you're only a Point there is only your Boss
connected to this Area, because he sends you all the Msgs.
Control your entries one more time, if everything meets your needs then
press (two times) Ok.
Now you're back in the Areas dialog box.
Like mentioned earlier, you can enter an Origin in the "Origin: ____" line
which is used in all Areas which doesn't have an Origin of their own.
To the left, highlighted with a black bar, is LOCAL; When you click on
LOCAL with the mouse the Entry Menu will be shown and you can eventually
make any changes you want. Press Ok and you return to the Areas dialog
box.
There are other button: "Del", "Add", "Insert" and "Node" along with two
arrow buttons. With Del, Add, and Insert you can add more Areas or delete
the ones you have. With the Nodes Button you can enter directly to the
Nodes Dialog. Via the arrow buttons you can roll through other screens
if their existing in case you have more than 60 Areas.
Now we have to control everything again. Then click the Save button.
The program will now create a file with the name AREAS.BBS. During a
Session this file is used to see what Areas you have and points to the
MSGS folder where your messages are to be stored.

FILE-ECHOS
==========
In FidoNet we have the possibilities not only to receive messages
automatically but also Files. When your Boss has "File Areas" then you
too can request these File Areas and automatically receive all new files
that are copied into them. In the MS-DOS world, "Tick and Hatch" are
normal. (By the way, Tick + Hatch also exist for Atari, but FileFix has
a much simpler and easier handling.)
The installation of the FileEchos is exactly as for the Areas, except that
for the Path you have to define a real folder instead of a file. The exact
procedure is described in Part 2 of the ACS Documents.
Registering happens exactly the same way as for an Area which you want to
request, except you write to "FileFix" instead of "AreaFix". How the
works is described later in Area Registration.
The next step is "E X T R A" 's :

Set these options before working on "Session Ranking" then you won't have
any problems!
With these options you select the file paths for every single program so
that BTS can really find them. Its very simple: You just click on the
respective line and the File Selector box appears. You only have to click
on the referred program. That would be everything if it wasn't for the
Command line. In the Cmdline the necessary parameters are passed to the
program.
Example:
Export : \FIDO\GO_OUT.TTP_____________
Cmdline: -l -v -ma2:241/5811__________ (2:241/5811 is the Boss Address!)
HINT: The Option -m is used here because this example is
designed to work without any nodelist. It is intended to be
used by simple points. If somebody creates a Routefile and
want to use those Features then this Option has to be
removed.
But if somebody wonders why Go_Out still doesn't read the
Routefile then either there is nothing to export or he
has no compiled Nodelist (Version 6).
If it is required that Go_Out reads the Routefile even if
there's nothing to export, then he must add the Option -n
to the Commandline.
TxtED : \FIDO\TEMPUS.PRG_____________ (I use Tempus, but any other editor
Cmdline: _____________________________ can be taken)
Again, control everything then press Ok.
At the next Menuposition you don't have to install anything. It is just
shown to let you take a look at it:

Which programs are called and the order in which they run is set by these
options. Finally we are working on a computer, why not let it run things
automatically.
To the right you have the possibility to fix up to 10 Sessions which you
can select via the Shell function keys (or mouse click).
You can run your Point even if you are not at home. Just take a Clock which
switches your Computer on, let the BTS start automatically (with the
Autostart Option of TOS 1.4 or higher) then the BTS will start the Sessions
as you need them. You just have to remember to type in the Sessionnumber you
want to be started in the BTS Options Dialog.
For more complex Configuration there are also Errorlevel and Loopfunctions
available. If an executed Program returns a specific Value and the same
Value is found as the Errorlevel for a Session then this Session will be
executed. You can let one Session run in a loop if you turn the Loopflag on.
IMPORTANT: Please remember to insert a Loopexit-Value which you can realy
reach within that Session, otherwise you will not be able to
exit from the Session.
For our example Point we want to use two Sessions:
- Session 1 for Polling the Boss when we have written messages,
- Session 2 for "Only Poll" when we haven't produced anything and
only want to see if the Boss has something for us.
SESSION 1:
Session 1 Click; the Ranking list is displayed for this Session
Export Click; the Exporter shows up in the first line (Go_Out)
Mailer Click; BinkleyTerm (BT) shows up in the second line
Import Click; guess what's displayed in the third line?
If you've made a mistake, you can either remove the last entry with "Clear
One" or all entries with "Clear All". And there exist one more fine
thing, when an entry is clicked on its highlighted; now when you select
"Clear One" the entry is deleted even if it isn't the last one.
SESSION 2:
Session 2 Click; the Ranking list for this Session is displayed
Mailer Click;
Import Click;
In closing, after you control: Ok.

And we continue with File-Request.
What is that? File Request means that you can download Files from your
Boss in a very elegant way. You Boss has a "Files List" that contain all
his files which you have access to. You can go through this list Offline
in the peace and quiet of your home. Then, when you've selected one or
more files you can use the option "Make Request" to create a small
communique and during the next Poll you'll receive your requested files.

+----------------------------------------------+
First you have to enter your Boss' NodeNumber (in case you forget you'll
be reminded by an error message). Then, like in real life, you get two
chooses:
- You enter the file names by hand; don't forget though, that the
software is very particular, when you make a typing
mistake, then its down the drain with your File request
(this time)! Capitals/small letters are unimportant.
- You use your Boss' File List!
The first time just click on "Request FILES", in the first
line the Magic Word "FILES" appears (Magic Word means,
that your Boss knows what do with that word, an extension
isn't necessary), then "SAVE".
In the OUTBOUND folder you now have a file that tells your
Boss during the next Poll that he should send his File
List. After the Poll this File List has been downloaded
into your INBOUND folder. You have to unpack it by hand
and copy it into your \FIDO\ folder. The File List from
my Boss is named:
03100012.LST
Now when you call this dialog box just click on "File-List.
A File Selector box appears, you click on the File List
from your Boss (what every its called) and low and behold,
you have the list on your monitor! You can scroll through
the list and check out the many files. With a mouse click
you can mark the files you want (they'll be inverted). If
you change your mind just click on the name one more time
and your choose will be deactivated.
When you then click on OK, you'll be returned to
"File Request Dialog"
All the marked files are listed here along with the "Total Bytes" of all
selected files (except "Magic Word" files) and again prove to yourself
that you alone support Ma Bell.
When you click on "Save" a Request File will be written to your OUTBOUND
folder.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
With that the installation is finished. Now we'll make a live test. Via
the Menu Line "Reader" - "Msgs Reader" you start LED. There you'll see
that you have the use of two Areas, namely "FidoNetmail" and LOCAL" (you
should know what the other two Areas are from previous reading:
"ExtraExpArea" and "Bad_Msgs")
"Two Areas" isn't exactly correct, because "FidoNetmail" isn't an Area.
You can't order it or cancel it. Netmail is your door to the
Fido World, through which all your Messages are sent. You've probably
noticed that it was created without you're having to install it as an Area.
Write a message to your Boss from the Area "LOCAL" (it stays in the
Pointnet), save it, and drop out of LED (with ^Q for Quit). from BTS
press the F1 key.
As long as your Boss' Node is busy the Poll Session should run as
expected.
Now your Boss knows that you have everything under control and he'll give
you the green light to order other Areas.
ORDERING and CANCELLING AREAS:
==============================
It works like this (also applies to FileFix):
You write in "NetMail" a message to AreaFix (Header: To:...) and enter the
address of your Boss. ^^^^^^^
In the line "Subj.:" key in the Password you received from your Boss and
after that possibly the parameter -l (separated by a space).
If your Boss is a FrontDoor Node (MS-DOS world) use "AreaMgr" instead of
"AreaFix" and you'll have to add a '+' sign in front of the the Area you
want to order.
You can pass up to three parameters to AreaFix:
-l, -q, -r.
these mean:
-l List. AreaFix will send you (during the next Poll, not the
current one) via a Netmail 'W/File' (an extra file) the
actual Arealist of your Boss. Most of the time this file
contains all available Areas with their descriptions.
-q Query. This is AreaFix's Netmail answer to you. It contains a
list of Areas available from your Boss. Those Areas with
a '*' are the Areas which active for you.
-r ReScan. When you send this command parameter to AreaFix then all
Areas which you've ordered with the current Netmail and
which haven't been deleted by your Boss will be rescaned
(that is, those Areas will be read one more time, starting
from the oldest existing messages, and then sent to you
during the next Poll). This has the advantage that you
can order a new Area, or re-order a cancelled Area, and
not have to wait for new messages to be written into it.
These parameters can be used separately, mixed, or all at the same time.
An Example:
-----------
From: Manfred Recla on 2:310/12.99
To: AreaFix on 2:310/12
Subj: Password -l -q
----------------------------------
atarist.eng
STOCKS
WheTHer
---
(Note: Areafix is not 'case-sensitive'!
The three '-' Signs declare the end of the List.)
With your first NetMail to AreaFix don't order any Areas, just fill out the
Heard and send AreaFix a "blank paper" (don't forget your password in the
subject line "Subj.: Password -l").
You don't have to order the "LOCAL" Area, your Boss has already done that
for you. During your next Poll you'll receive the list containing all the
Areas which you can order. Pick out what you want, write in a NetMail to
AreaFix the Areas names without any comment (ONLY the AREA NAME!)
one after the other (see the above example) and you have it made in
the shade.
When you believe that an Area is no longer interesting, you can cancel it.
You only have to write another NetMail to AreaFix except this time with a
minus sigh in front of the Area name.
An Example maybe:

From: Manfred Recla on 2:310/12.99
To: AreaFix on 2:310/12

So, for the beginning thats everything. Get busy and drown your Boss
in messages. If you have any questions, you can ask your Boss in
confidence.
Other information, such as Crashmails, Polling and Requesing in to other
Zones, which surely you don't need in the beginning, can be found in Part
3 of this manual.
