  19.         Welcome to Multi~Lang,  the multiple language look-up system  for 
  20.         the Atari ST series.   Multi~Lang is a desk accessory that allows 
  21.         you  to convert words between several different  languages.   You 
  22.         may  configure  Multi~Lang to convert between up to  9  different 
  23.         languages.   Multi~Lang  uses a disk-based dictionary  search  to 
  24.         save on valuable memory.
  25.         
  26.         
  27.         Installing Multi~Lang
  28.         ---------------------
  29.         
  30.         To  install Multi~Lang,  simply copy the files  MULTLANG.ACC  and 
  31.         MULTLANG.DIC  into  the root directory on  your  boot  disk,  and 
  32.         MULTINST.PRG into the AUTO folder.   Now reboot your machine  and 
  33.         Multi~Lang  will load automatically.   The MULTINST.PRG  file  is 
  34.         optional,  but is required if you wish to use CTRL/SHIFT/SHIFT to 
  35.         trigger Multi~Lang.

  38.         Activating Multi~Lang
  39.         ---------------------
  40.         
  41.         You  may  activate Multi~Lang in two  different  ways.   You  can 
  42.         select  it  from the DESK menu on the desktop,  as you  would  do 
  43.         with  any  Desk Accessory,  or use  the  CTRL/SHIFT/SHIFT  hotkey 
  44.         combination.   If  you wish to use the hotkey you must place  the 
  45.         MULTINST.PRG program in your AUTO folder.

  48.         
  49.         Using Multi~Lang
  50.         ----------------
  51.         
  52.         Multi~Lang is designed to be very easy and fast to use.  When you 
  53.         activate Multi~Lang you are presented with a screen similar to:

  64.         At the '>>' prompt simply type the word that you wish to  convert 
  65.         and  hit return.   Multi~Lang will now search the dictionary  for 
  66.         the word that you have entered.
  67.         
  68.         If  Multi~Lang  finds  the word that you  have  entered  in  it's 
  69.         current  dictionary  it  will  display  the  translation  in  all 
  70.         available languages, and you will get a screen similar to:

  88.         If you now hit a key the search will now continue looking for any 
  89.         other matches in the dictionary.   If you hit UNDO at this  point 
  90.         you  will return to the word prompt.   You may stop searching  at 
  91.         any point by holding down both of the Shift keys.
  92.         
  93.         To exit from Multi~Lang hit the UNDO key at the word prompt.
  94.         
  95.         Multi~Lang  performs partial work searches.   This means that  if 
  96.         you  enter  'DISK' then Multi~Lang would match it to  words  like 
  97.         'DISKETTE' and 'HARD DISK'.
  98.         
  99.         
  100.         Updating Multi~Lang
  101.         -------------------
  102.         
  103.         You  may  update  the  Multi~Lang  dictionary  (normally   called 
  104.         MULTLANG.DIC)  by using a normal text editor.   The  text  editor 
  105.         must be capable of loading and saving a raw ASCII text file.
  106.         
  107.         The format of the Multi~Lang dictionary is as follows:
  108.         
  109.         Line1:      Number of Languages in the dictionary.
  110.         Line2:      Names of the Languages.
  111.         Line3:      First set of words.
  112.         Line4:      Second set of words.
  113.         Line5:      ...etc...
  114.         Last Line:  Stu!
  115.         
  116.         Example dictionary file:

  124.         NOTE:  All words must be separated by *'s.

  126.                The last line of the file must be 'Stu!'.

  128.         You can place comments on the end of any line as long as it comes 
  129.         after the terminating '*'.
  130.         
  131.         
  132.         You  may change the dictionary that Multi~Lang uses  by  pressing 
  133.         the  'Insert'  key when you are prompted for a  word.   You  must 
  134.         enter  the  full pathname of the dictionary including  the  drive 
  135.         identifier. eg: C:\MULTLANG.DIC, F:\MULTLANG\WORDS.DIC
  136.         
  137.         You  may  store  up  to 10 dictionary  names  in  the  Multi~Lang 
  138.         configuration  file  for easy switching.   To store  the  current 
  139.         dictionary  name press Shift and any function key.   To recall  a 
  140.         previously stored dictionary name just hit the function key  that 
  141.         you assigned it to.   You may view the contents of the dictionary 
  142.         list  by hitting the TAB key.   Deleting an entry may be done  by 
  143.         pressing CONTROL and a function key.
  144.         
  145.         The  current  dictionary configuration can be saved  by  pressing 
  146.         CONTROL S, and reloaded by pressing CONTROL L.  The configuration 
  147.         is  written  to  a  file called MULTLANG.CFG  on  the  disk  that 
  148.         Multi~Lang  was  originally  loaded  from.   This  file  will  be 
  149.         automatically loaded every time that Multi~Lang is booted.
  150.         
  151.         
  152.         Trouble Shooting
  153.         ----------------
  154.         
  155.         PROBLEM:  Multi~Lang  doesn't stop searching but stops  accessing 
  156.                   the disk.
  157.         SOLUTION: Check that your dictionary file is terminated with Stu!
  158.         
  159.         PROBLEM:  Words  exist  in your dictionary but are not  found  by 
  160.                   Multi~Lang.
  161.         SOLUTION: Check that you dictionary is in UPPERCASE.
  162.                   Make  sure  that  you haven't  padded  your  word  with 
  163.                   spaces.
  164.         
  165.         PROBLEM:  Multi~Lang crashes when you attempt a search.
  166.         SOLUTION: Check the format of your dictionary.
  167.         
  168.         PROBLEM:  Multi~Lang doesn't display all of the languages.
  169.         SOLUTION: Does   the  dictionary  have  the  correct  number   of 
  170.                   languages indicated on the first line.
  171.         
  172.         PROBLEM:  If you still have problems...

  200.         You may type European (8 bit ASCII) characters into Multi~Lang by 
  201.         using a special key combination.   To enter a special  character, 
  202.         you  must  precede a key press with either the up or  down  arrow 
  203.         keys.   For example if you wish to type the character 'ä' you can 
  204.         press  the  up  arrow  followed  by  the  '$'  key.    Other  key 
  205.         combinations are shown below:

  340.         The Dictionary Optimizer
  341.         ------------------------
  342.         
  343.         If  you wish to perform a very quick search for a word  you  will 
  344.         need  to  use  the  dictionary  optimizer.    OPTIMIZE.TOS  is  a 
  345.         dictionary optimizer program that re-arranges your dictionary and 
  346.         produces an index file for maximum speed.
  347.         
  348.         This operation may take a long time,  especially if you only have 
  349.         floppy  disks.    I  therefore  recommend  that  you  place   the 
  350.         dictionary file in a Ram-Disk for optimum speed.
  351.         
  352.         You  may  only use the optimizer on words that are in  the  first 
  353.         language  in the dictionary (the one that appears  first).   When 
  354.         OPTIMIZE.TOS is ran,  you will be asked to enter the filename  of 
  355.         your  dictionary and of a temporary file.   The drive  that  will 
  356.         hold the temporary file MUST have enough space to hold a copy  of 
  357.         the dictionary.
  358.         
  359.         The  optimizer will now scan your dictionary several  times,  and 
  360.         will  eventually tell you that the optimization is  complete.   A 
  361.         file   called   MULTLANG.INX  (if  your  dictionary   is   called 
  362.         MULTLANG.DIC), will have been created, this is the index file and 
  363.         must  be  kept in the same directory as  your  dictionary.   This 
  364.         process may take a while on a large dictionary.
  365.         
  366.         WARNING:   ALWAYS  TAKE A COPY OF YOUR DICTIONARY BEFORE  RUNNING 
  367.         THE OPTIMIZER. IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG YOU RISK LOSING YOUR DATA.
  368.         
  369.         ** IF YOU EDIT THE DICTIONARY YOU MUST RE-RUN THE OPTIMIZER **
  370.         
  371.         To  perform an 'optimized search' using Multi~Lang,  prefix  your 
  372.         word  with  a "!".   Eg:  if you want to  perform  an  'optimized 
  373.         search' on the word DISKETTE,  you would enter !DISKETTE.  If the 
  374.         index file is not available a normal search will be performed.
  375.         
  376.         An  optimized  search will scan the dictionary from  the  section 
  377.         that contains the word that you have entered.   For  example,  if 
  378.         you enter !ZWERG,  the search will start from the 'Z' section and 
  379.         continue to the end of the dictionary.

  381.         
  382.         
  383.         Compatibility
  384.         -------------
  385.         
  386.         Multi~Lang  should  be  compatible with  most  programs  and  all 
  387.         versions of the standard ST,  it has been tested on the following 
  388.         versions of TOS:  1.0 (1985),  1.2 (1987), 1.4 (Rainbow TOS), 1.6 
  389.         (STe),  1.62  (STe),  2.05 (Mega STe).   Multi~Lang makes no  un-
  390.         documented  calls  to  the  operating  system  to  ensure  upward 
  391.         compatibility with whatever Atari plan for the future.
  392.         
  393.         You  may  encounter problems if you use an extended  screen  mode 
  394.         that  occupies more than 32K of RAM.   Although I have  tried  to 
  395.         make Multi~Lang compatible with large-screen Moniterm monitors, I 
  396.         cannot guarantee that everything will work.   If you own a  large 
  397.         screen  monitor and would like to run Multi~Lang  on  it,  please 
  398.         contact me and I'll write a custom version.
  399.         
  400.         Multi~Lang will not work with programs that update the screen  on 
  401.         the  Vertical  Blank  Interrupt.   This  includes  programs  like 
  402.         monochrome / colour emulators.
  403.         
  404.         Although Multi~Lang has been tested thoroughly on many systems, I 
  405.         cannot  guarantee that it will function correctly on all  setups.  
  406.         I  therefore do not accept responsibility for any loss or  damage 
  407.         of data or hardware through the use of this product.   If you  do 
  408.         encounter  problems  then please contact me and I'll  attempt  to 
  409.         produce a fixed version.
  410.         
  411.         
  412.         Known Problems
  413.         --------------
  414.         
  415.         On  TOS  1.0  machines  the VT52  cursor  will  forget  where  it 
  416.         originally  was when you exit Multi~Lang.   This is a feature  of 
  417.         this TOS version, I am working on a solution.
  418.         
  419.         You  should  be  aware  that  not  all  programs  can  be  safely 
  420.         interrupted  by pressing CTRL/SHIFT/SHIFT and may respond with  a 
  421.         system crash - this is the case if a disk access is in  progress.
  422.         If  you  try  to  trigger Multi~Lang  and  nothing  happens  then 
  423.         Multi~Lang is not available due the current state of your machine 
  424.         -  if Multi~Lang was triggered at this point your  machine  would 
  425.         crash.   If  you can select Multi~Lang from the menu bar  then  I 
  426.         recommend that you do so as this is the only 100% safe way.
  427.         
  428.         The  dictionary  that  is supplied  with  Multi~Lang  is  German-
  429.         English-German.   It  may contain errors as it has been  compiled 
  430.         from many different sources.   If you find any discrepancies then 
  431.         please feel free to correct them,  if you make extensive  changes 
  432.         then please send a copy to the author, he'll be forever grateful.

  434.         
  435.         Distribution Rights
  436.         -------------------
  437.         
  438.         The rights to distribute Multi~Lang are as follows:
  439.         
  440.         Individual Users:
  441.         
  442.         Multi~Lang  is distributed as Shareware which means that you  are 
  443.         free to distribute it,  as long as the files remain  intact.   If 
  444.         you find the program useful,  you are expected to register.   The 
  445.         registration   fee   for  Multi~Lang  is  10   pounds   sterling.  
  446.         Registered  users  will  receive a copy  of  the  latest  version 
  447.         including a copy of the latest dictionary,  and will be  entitled 
  448.         to  technical  support.   Fill  in the form at the  end  of  this 
  449.         document  and send it to the author along with your  contribution 
  450.         to register.
  451.         
  452.         Bulletin Boards:
  453.         
  454.         There  are  no restrictions for distribution on  bulletin  boards 
  455.         other  than  all  files must remain intact  and  not  distributed 
  456.         separately.

  458.         PD/Shareware Libraries:
  459.         
  460.         If  you  run  a PD / Shareware library  you  may  NOT  distribute 
  461.         Multi~Lang  without  paying  a  registration  fee  of  15  pounds 
  462.         sterling to the author.  Doing so would be a breach of copyright, 
  463.         and  is  a  criminal  offence.    An  alternative  to  the   cash 
  464.         registration  fee for PD Libraries is to send me a copy  of  your 
  465.         catalogue and credit for 5-10 disks.   For your registration  fee 
  466.         (or disks) you will be supplied with all major program updates as 
  467.         they are released.
  468.         
  469.         Computer Magazines (published by non PD libraries):
  470.         
  471.         The fee for distribution by computer magazines is negotiable  and 
  472.         distribution  rights may be refused - don't duplicate your  disks 
  473.         before contacting the author.

  475.         Computer Magazines (published by PD libraries):

  477.         There  is  no distribution fee on the condition that  the  author 
  478.         receives a 1 year free subscription to your publication.  If this 
  479.         is not acceptable,  the conditions are the same as for  magazines

  542.         Multi~Lang need not be limited to a language conversion  utility,  
  543.         you can build 'dictionaries' with almost any information in them.  
  544.         One  possibility  would  be  to build a  list  of  your  software 
  545.         collection.  Such a dictionary may look like this:

  554.         With this dictionary you would be able to quickly locate where  a 
  555.         particular program is,  and various other details about  it.   If 
  556.         you don't want a certain field in the dictionary to be  searched, 
  557.         then simply put it in lowercase because Multi~Lang only  searches 
  558.         for UPPERCASE words.   One limitation that does exist is that you 
  559.         should avoid using fields of only 1 character.
  560.         
  561.         Obviously  this  is only a small example,  but if  you  use  your 
  562.         imagination,   the  possibilities  for  Multi~Lang  are  endless.  
  563.         Remember:   the  size of your dictionary is only limited by  your 
  564.         storage device,  so on a hard disk you could have many  megabytes 
  565.         of data, and still search it using a 520 ST...!

  572.         Multi~Lang  is  under  continuous  development  and  the   latest 
  573.         versions are made available to registered users / libraries only.  
  574.         If  you  are  unsure whether you have  the  latest  version  then 
  575.         contact  me stating your current version enclosing a  blank  disk 
  576.         and  return postage.   Users outside the UK can send extra  blank 
  577.         disks  to  cover the postage charge.   If you  already  have  the 
  578.         current version I will hold onto your disk,  and dispatch it when

  605.         text files.  A prototype has already been written that translates 
  606.         at  a speed of in excess of 1000 words per minute,  but there  is 
  607.         still room for improvement.
