- 387DX MATH UNIT & IBM ADV. DIAGNOSTICS
-
- The 387DX and Inboard 80287 Math Module will fail the IBM Advanced
- Diagnostics. This happens because the diagnostics reinitialize
- the 387DX or Math Module after the Inboard 386 has already
- initialized it. Use the CHKCOP program on the Inboard 386
- diskette, instead of the IBM Diagnostics, to test an 387DX or
- Inboard math module.
-
-
-
- CHKCOP 2.2
-
- CHKCOP is a Intel's Math CoProcessor test program. It is
- currently available on the Intel BBS or on disk. If you aren't
- able to download CHKCOP, you can request a copy from Intel
- Customer Support.
-
- The parameters for CHKCOP are :
- chkcop /c For continuous testing
- chkcop n Where n is any number from 1 to 5, the numbers on
- the command line are the tests which will be skipped. (ie:
- chkcop /c 1 4 CHKCOP will continuously test on tests 2,3, and
- 5.
-
- Test definitions:
- Test 1 - Floating point addition
- Test 2 - Floating point subtraction
- Test 3 - Floating point multiplication
- Test 4 - Floating point division
- Test 5 - Floating point constant comparison
-
-
-
- "CHKCOP HAS FOUND" AND LOCKS UP
-
- When running CHKCOP 2.2, it may lock up under certain
- circumstances. These include:
-
- ■ Incorrect dipswitch setting
- ■ A conflict with device drivers and/or TSR's
- ■ A bad chip can also cause this.
-
- If CHKCOP locks up, boot to a DOS disk and re-run CHKCOP.

- CHKCOP 2.0 INTERMITTENTLY FAILS DIVIDE TEST
-
- If CHKCOP intermittently fails the divide test, there may be a
- timing problem with the system board. Intel has confirmed that
- Chips & Technologies chip set version 82C211 will cause the
- failure. Version 82C211C should work OK.
-
- The Toshiba T1600 and Dell System 200 both use this chip set. If
- you experience this problem, examine the system board to see if
- your computer uses the Chips and Technologies chip set.
-
-
-
- CHKCOP SEEMS FASTER ON AN 80287 THAN ON AN 287XL
-
- Intel 80287 Math CoProcessor chips (6, 8, and 10 MHz) don't
- support trigonometric functions, but the 287XL does. CHKCOP skips
- the "Trancendental" test on an 80287, but executes it on the
- 287XL. Because CHKCOP runs more tests on the 287XL, the total
- testing time may be longer for the 287XL then for the 80287.
-
-
-
- SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS AND THE 287XL
-
- Several system diagnostic programs have difficulty detecting a
- 287XL properly. The following is a list of diagnostic programs
- that have been tested and their results:

- GENERAL MATH COPROCESSOR TROUBLESHOOTING
-
- Here are some things to check for if you have problems:
-
- In IBM PC, is Switch 2 of Switch-block 1 in proper position?
- Some IBM manuals show the incorrect setting for this switch.
- Follow the instructions in your Math Coprocessor manual.
- Look for bent pins. If any are bent, carefully straighten
- them.
- Is the chip offset by one or two pins?
- Is chip backwards?
- Look for 1978 only copyright on the 4.77 MHz 8088 chip. If
- found, replace the 8088. Do not replace it if other dates are
- listed in addition to 1978 or if your computer runs faster than
- 4.77 MHz.
- If V20 CPU is installed, contact your computer's manufacturer
- for compatibility information.
- Is the coprocessor speed rated too slow for the machine that
- it is installed in? Check the Intel Math CoProcessor Hardware
- Compatibility section of FaxBack.
- If you're unsure whether the chip is operating correctly or
- whether computer recognizes it, use your modem to get Intel's
- CHKCOP math coprocessor diagnostic program at (503) 645-6275 or
- contact Intel Customer Support.
