  1.                            THE 16550 UART

  3.                            WHO NEEDS ONE?

  6. The UART is located on your serial communications board and controls
  7. reception and transmission of data through your serial communications
  8. port.  There are several variations of UARTs used in personal
  9. computers.  The most popular being the 8250, 82450, and 16450.  These
  10. were released before the advent of multi-tasking and high speed
  11. telecommunications and the high speed PC data bus.  When using a 386
  12. or 286 in a multi-tasking environment such as DesQview or DoubleDOS
  13. or Windows, and a high speed communications device, (ie. 9600 bps
  14. modems) the ability to switch tasks reliably when conducting
  15. communications is vital.  With the 8250, 82450, and 16450, this
  16. ability is lost.  Once communications are initiated and the PC is made
  17. to move on to another task, the CPU time is split, this causes an
  18. "overflow" of data at the serial port, usually this causes the
  19. download or upload to terminate abnormally.

  25. The 16550 UART uses a small data buffer with FIFO (first in first out)
  26. to be able to conduct communications without failure.  There are also
  27. several variations of the 16550.  The 3 main ones are the National
  28. SemiConductor NS-16550AN & NS-16550AFN, and the Western Digital
  29. 16C550-PL, all these will do the job.  The NS-16550AFN is rated for
  30. operation in bus speeds of up to 20 MHz.  This is usually not a
  31. problem in any case.

  33. As of yet there are very few PC's which come equipped with these 16550
  34. UARTS, you can tell if you have one by looking on your serial board
  35. for a 40 pin chip with the numbers 8250, 82450, 16450 or 16550 on it.
  36. If your PC does not have one and you are experiencing problems with
  37. your modem or data transmission you probably need one.
