-
- 1.0 TuneUp
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- TuneUp requires a memory manager, such as HIMEM.SYS, to run properly.
- You must have the following conventional and extended memory
- available:
- DOS-based Program Conventional Extended
- Norton Diagnostics (NDIAGS) 512K NONE
- Norton Disk Doctor (NDD)* 360K 2 MB
- Space Wizard (SPACEWZD) 360K 2 MB
-
- * Please note that Norton Disk Doctor may take a long time to load
- during TuneUp. This is normal, so please be patient.
-
-
- 2.0 Installation with Setup Wizard
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- NOTE: DO NOT install Norton Utilities to a folder with a name longer
- than 40 characters. The DOS-based Norton Utilities programs will not
- run properly.
- =========================
- During installation, Setup Wizard attempts to rename older Norton
- Utilities programs to *.old, and if files with this extension already
- exist, to *.bak. If both extensions already exist, Setup Wizard over-
- writes the older file without creating a backup first.
- =========================
- Microsoft Office 95's FindFast feature may cause problems with
- Setup Wizard. Installing Norton Utilities while FindFast is running
- will cause Setup Wizard dialog placement problems (dialogs may also
- appear off the screen) and conflict with its initial Windows 95
- restart procedure. Should you experience these problems (or if you
- are reading this prior to installation), you should remove it
- temporarily from your StartUp folder.
-
-
- 3.0 General Points of Interest
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Several Norton Utilities programs lock the drive on which they are
- working. If the drive is written to while it is locked, the program
- must restart. As odd as this sounds, this process is normal for
- multitasking operating systems. This process is commonly noticed on a
- drive containing the swap file. For example, if the swap file grows
- in size while Norton Disk Doctor is diagnosing the disk, Norton Disk
- Doctor will restart in order to verify the newly written data on the
- disk.
- =========================
- Some programs, such as the IBM RRTask List program, prevent Norton
- Utilities programs from obtaining a drive lock. Under these
- circumstances, remove this program from memory by removing it from
- the StartUp folder and/or from the "LOAD=" line of your WIN.INI file,
- restart your computer, and try the Norton Utilities program again.
- =========================
- The DOS-based programs that accompany Norton Utilities for Windows 95
- have the following minimum memory requirements:
- DOS-based Program Conventional Extended
- Norton Diagnostics (NDIAGS) 512K NONE
- Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) 360K 2 MB
- Space Wizard (SPACEWZD) 360K 2 MB
- Disk Editor (DISKEDIT) 360K 2 MB
- UnErase (UNERASE) 360K 2 MB
- UnFormat (UNFORMAT) 360K 2 MB
- TuneUp (TUNEUP) 360K 2 MB
- Rescue Restore (RESCUE) 512K NONE
-
- Most of these programs run in protected mode, therefore a memory
- manager, such as HIMEM.SYS, must be loaded.
- =========================
- The protected mode DOS Norton Utilities programs may display
- "Run-time error R6009 - not enough space for environment" if your
- PATH environment variable contains more than 128 characters.
- =========================
- If you are running the Norton Desktop for Windows, the following lines
- must be removed from SYSTEM.INI file:
- device=c:\ndw\vfintd.386
- device=c:\ndw\vnss.386
- =========================
- Norton Disk Doctor can be used to diagnose and recover drives under
- Windows 95. However, many of the operating system functions needed
- by the other utilities are not available in this mode, and therefore
- the other utilities are not supported under safe mode. If you have an
- emergency situation and you cannot start Windows 95 normally, we
- highly recommend that you refer to Appendix A, "DOS Recovery
- Procedures" in the Norton Utilities User's Guide.
- =========================
- Beware of disk repair programs that are not specifically designed to
- repair the Windows 95 file system. Using such a program can cause
- corruption of long file names. If you accidentally run a disk repair
- program not designed for Windows 95, don't worry. Norton Disk Doctor
- will report and repair problems with long file names.
- =========================
- Hard disk drives with more than 1024 cylinders may cause problems with
- Norton Utilities if improperly partitioned. You can overcome this
- problem by using an Enhanced IDE (EIDE) or SCSI controller, upgrading
- your system BIOS, or through the use of third-party disk partitioning
- software.
- =========================
- The Windows 95 Setup Wizard does not automatically include Quick View
- as part of the installation process. Quick View must be installed in
- order to use the Quick View feature in UnErase Wizard and Space Wizard.
- If Quick View is not installed on your computer, you can add it by
- doing the following:
- 1 Click Settings, then Control Panel from the Start menu.
- 2 Click Add/Remove Programs.
- 3 Click the Windows Setup tab.
- 4 Click Accessories from the list box, then click Details.
- 5 Click Quick View putting a check mark to the left of it.
- 6 Click OK and then Apply.
- You will be prompted to insert your Windows 95 disk.
- =========================
- Some computers start in monochrome mode after running Windows 95.
- Any DOS program may display in monochrome because of this. To
- correct this problem, try typing MODE CO80 at the prompt.
-
-
- 4.0 Norton Protected Recycle Bin and Norton Protection (NProtect)
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- To configure various Norton Protection (NProtect) features,
- context-click (right-click) on the Recycle Bin icon, then click
- Properties from the context menu.
- =========================
- NProtect uses available free space to protect your files. Once the
- free space available reaches a specified threshold, NProtect will
- start purging the oldest protected files to free up just enough space
- to protect the latest deletion. This threshold is currently set to
- 10% or 10 MB of the current disk partition, whichever is less.
- =========================
- The Norton Protected Recycle Bin will protect up to a maximum of 1500
- files.
- =========================
- NProtect will not automatically make room on a removable drive if that
- drive was empty at startup. NProtect needs to acquire size measurements
- regarding the drive in order to make room and will re-acquire this
- information once a deletion has taken place or it detects that the
- volume in that drive has changed.
- =========================
- Before compressing a drive, you should empty the files that have been
- protected by Norton Protection. This will speed up the compression of
- the drive. To empty the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, context-click
- (right-click) the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, then click Empty
- Norton Protected Files.
- =========================
- Purging protected files while a disk utility program is processing may
- not complete. You will notice that the NProtect shield does not
- change after purging the files if the Show Norton Protection status
- icon is checked. Simply close the disk utility and retry the purge
- command again.
- =========================
- If Show Norton Protection status is checked and you check or uncheck
- the Use Large Icons check box on the Plus! tab in the Display
- Properties, then the Recycle Bin icon may appear stretched or
- shrunken. To fix this, go to the Desktop Item tab in the Recycle Bin
- Properties, uncheck the Show Norton Protection status check box,
- click the Apply button, and then check the Show Norton Protection
- Status check box and click OK.
- =========================
- The Show Norton Protection Status feature may automatically shut-off
- should Windows run out of memory. Once you resolve your memory
- problems, you will need to turn this feature on manually.
- =========================
- To uninstall Norton Protection, use the Selective UnInstall option and
- choose UnErase Wizard. This will remove both the Norton Protected
- Recycle Bin and UnErase Wizard from your computer. Simply open Add/
- Remove Programs from the Control Panel to start Setup Wizard's
- Uninstall programs.
-
-
- 5.0 Norton Diagnostics (NDIAGS) DOS-based program
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Norton Diagnostics will reboot your computer when performing a
- Comprehensive Memory Test. The drivers for compressed drives are
- temporarily disabled during this process. Be sure to start your
- computer normally after using Norton Diagnostics so that the drivers
- for compressed drives are loaded and the drives are properly mounted.
- =========================
- Do not run the Comprehensive Memory Test option from NDiags on a
- "swapped" compressed drive (where your "C:" is compressed and another
- drive is the host drive). If you accidentally run Ndiags in this
- configuration, you must rename your compressed drive drivers back
- to their original names before restarting your computer. To do
- this, look for the files dblspace.nds or drvspace.nds in your
- root directory, and rename them back to dblspace.bin or drvspace.bin,
- respectively, then reboot.
-
-
- 6.0 Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) Windows-based and DOS-based
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Norton Disk Doctor is designed to restart upon detection of writes to
- the disk that is being diagnosed. This is needed to insure the
- data integrity on the disk when repairs are required. This restart
- may occur several times during a single NDD session.
- =========================
- When running the DOS version of NDD on a computer containing one or
- more drives with invalid boot records, you may receive a message
- saying "Can't access drive x: (Abort, Retry, Ignore)". Select Ignore,
- and NDD will continue loading. Select the drive to repair the problem.
- =========================
- Norton Utilities programs should not be run during system startup with
- other programs that require exclusive access to a drive. For example,
- do not run Norton Disk Doctor and ScanDisk on the same drive at
- startup. Doing so will produce an error message.
- =========================
- Using Norton Disk Doctor on either SyQuest 270 or Adaptec 2940w drives
- may warn you of the inability to access partitions on drive 1. If you
- get a message indicating this, go into the Windows 95 hardware manager
- and uncheck INT 13 Unit operation for the device if it is enabled.
- =========================
- Make sure you are running under Windows 95 MS-DOS mode when using the
- DOS-based Norton Disk Doctor program to repair the boot record.
-
-
- 7.0 Norton System Doctor
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Norton System Doctor may report 100% CPU usage when Microsoft's
- System Monitor (SYSMON) program is running. This is caused by System
- Monitor's use of all idle processor time while displaying its
- processor usage gauge.
- =========================
- Norton System Doctor may report 100% CPU usage during a pcANYWHERE
- session. This is caused by the high activity generated by constant
- video updates and modem transmissions.
- =========================
- Norton System Doctor sensors, may, on occasion, appear on Microsoft
- Access's background window. When this occurs, force the Access
- window to be refreshed by changing the size of the Access window,
- or by minimizing and then maximizing it.
- =========================
- Using High Contrast (White on Black) Accessibility Options may cause
- Norton System Doctor's text to be invisible. You will either need to
- adjust System Doctor's sensor colors, or turn off the High Contrast
- features.
- =========================
- Norton System Doctor's sensors have been configured for optimum
- performance on most systems. You should not increase the frequency
- of any sensor that can automatically run a Norton Utilities program,
- such as the Rescue Readiness, Image, Disk Integrity, and Fragmentation
- sensors. If you do notice a decrease in drive performance while
- Norton System Doctor is monitoring that drive, you may want to
- decrease the frequency with which Norton System Doctor monitors that
- drive.
- =========================
- If you don't use a mouse and you need to access Norton System
- Doctor while it is docked, reopen Norton System Doctor from the
- Start menu. To do this, press CTRL-ESC and use the arrow keys to
- highlight Norton System Doctor from the Norton Utilities menu and
- press Enter. This does not open another instance of Norton System
- Doctor. It simply makes Norton System Doctor the active window. You
- can then use ALT-Spacebar or F10 to access Norton System Doctor's
- menu.
- =========================
- Norton System Doctor's docking features are limited while using
- Program Manager (PROGMAN) as the shell, and may produce different
- results than when using the standard Windows 95 shell (EXPLORER)
- and other docking programs. There are several specific issues:
- - the autohide feature may not function correctly
- - maximize, restore, and close buttons may be grayed
- - If a minimized System Doctor is restored by using the Alt-Tab
- key, the border may display inconsistently
- - Clicking on the minimized title and opening to a full screen
- may exhibit behavior different from that of other applications.
- =========================
- You must open the properties for the given Stop Light sensor in order
- to change it's color. You cannot change the color from the Appearance
- tab of the Norton System Doctor Options dialog.
- =========================
- If you have "Always on Top" disabled in a docked Norton System
- Doctor, you will not be able to move windows past the area occupied
- by the System Doctor.
- =========================
- In rare cases, in a vertically docked Norton System Doctor, it's
- width may be larger than that necessary to accommodate the current
- set of selected sensors. To get around this problem, simply close
- and re-run the program.
-
-
- 8.0 Rescue Disk
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- You cannot save rescue items to the root of any hard disk. The root
- typically contains important data that could be overwritten.
- =========================
- Do not use the "Full Format" or "Quick Format" formatting options
- with Rescue saving to a compressed floppy. Use the "Use Available
- Disk Space" option only.
- =========================
- The Rescue disk cannot be booted on a dual-boot system with a Windows
- NT boot partition.
-
-
- 9.0 Image
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Image may report a "Volume Lock Failed." This simply indicates that
- another disk program is currently accessing the disk and Image could
- not lock the volume for its own process. Simply click OK and try
- again when disk access by the other program has stopped.
-
-
- 10.0 Speed Disk
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Norton Speed Disk is designed to restart upon detection of writes to
- the disk that is being optimized. This is needed to insure the
- data integrity on the disk while optimization is occuring. This
- restart may occur several times during a single Speed Disk session.
- =========================
- If Speed Disk needs to "Pack" your DoubleSpace or DriveSpace 2 volume,
- it can take several hours or longer. Using Space Wizard to free up
- space can help overcome this problem.
- =========================
- If Speed Disk displays a message indicating that you need to defragment
- the compressed volume file (CVF) of a DriveSpace 2 or DriveSpace 3
- drive, do the following:
- 1 Open the DriveSpace program from the System Tools menu.
- 2 Click the compressed volume to defragment.
- 3 Click Unmount from the Advanced menu.
- 4 Optimize the host volume with Speed Disk.
- After you have optimized the host volume, do the following:
- 1 Open the DriveSpace program from the System Tools menu.
- 2 Click the host volume to mount.
- 3 Click Mount... from the Advanced menu.
- 4 Optimize the compressed volume with Speed Disk.
- On rare occasions, this message may appear for a compressed Windows
- startup drive. If this occurs, please call Symantec technical support
- for further instructions.
- =========================
- Speed Disk locks the compressed volume file (CVF) while optimizing.
- Whenever a CVF is locked, the operating system also locks the host
- drive (and any other CVF's on the same host drive). This may result
- in other disk programs failing to run on the host drive while the
- lock is in effect.
-
-
- 11.0 System Information
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Total Windows Memory value (located below the pie chart in System
- Information's Memory tab) is calculated by adding together the
- following numbers:
- total physical memory
- + total current swap file size
- + total current free space on disk
- + total size of all currently loaded 32-bit applications
- The last item is included in the total calculation because 32-bit
- applications under Windows 95 are "swapped out" by flushing them
- from memory, and then re-loading from the original disk image when
- they need to be "swapped in".
- =========================
- System Information will report the bus type for "hybrid bus" systems
- as follows:
- VL/ISA is reported as ISA
- VL/EISA is reported as EISA
- PCI/ISA is reported as PCI
- PCI/EISA is reported as PCI
- =========================
- It may take System Information an extended amount of time to gather
- information about network resources on large networks.
- =========================
- Printing a report while using some versions of Adobe Type Manager
- (ATM) may cause the reversed text headings to print incorrectly.
- =========================
- The Multimedia tab cannot gather information about the "cdaudio" MCI
- device while an audio CD is playing. System Information displays
- "Can not gather additional info" when this occurs.
- =========================
- For network, CD, and compressed drives, the Disk Usage Selection on
- the Drive Tab is the total size of all selected items as reported by
- the file system. This does not include "slack" space (wasted space
- because of the device's cluster size), so the total amount allocated
- will often be slightly more than the size displayed by System
- Information.
- =========================
- If the Windows 95 Device Manager shows an improperly configured device
- (represented by a yellow "!" symbol), System Information may be unable
- to display the correct information for this device. Also note that
- Plug & Play devices that are disconnected may be reported by the
- Windows 95 Device Manager as configured. System Information will
- likely display a disconnected Plug & Play device as configured and
- active.
- =========================
- System Information will identify a NexGen 586 computer as having a
- 386 based processor. The NexGen processor uses a 386 instruction
- set.
- =========================
- To learn more about benchmarking your computer, click Information
- from the System Benchmark window. Please note the following:
- - CMOS settings can be used to enable/disable the L1 and/or
- L2 cache. If the CPU seems slower than it should, verify the
- cache settings.
- - Some variation in the benchmark results is normal. System
- Information is designed to exclude common outside factors,
- such as most hardware interrupts, running applications, disk
- swapping, etc. However, some low-level system events cannot
- be completely factored out. These events may cause minor
- variations in benchmark results.
- - Although your computer may be the same CPU and MHz speed as
- other computers, it does not mean that it will produce the
- same benchmark results. Various other factors, such as
- the type and speed of the system bus and memory, and the
- amount and architecture of the memory cache, are accounted
- for and will affect the speed of your computer and the
- results of the benchmark.
-
-
- 12.0 UnErase Wizard
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Recently Deleted Files list shows all files that are recoverable.
- This list will display the last 25 deletions. However, if some of the
- files have been overwritten, you will not see 25 files in the list.
- =========================
- If you delete a file on a floppy disk from an MS-DOS prompt and you
- specify filename letters after a wildcard (for example,
- DEL *ILENAME.TXT as opposed to DEL FILENAME.TXT or DEL *.TXT), then
- UnErase Wizard will show the file as Unrecoverable in its Recently
- Deleted Files page. Right-click in the center of the file list to
- turn Show Unrecoverable Files on.) However, the file is usually
- recoverable if you click Next and use the subsequent Wizard pages
- to search the floppy disk.
- =========================
- If Quick View is not functioning, then refer to the note under "General
- Points of Interest" earlier in this document.
-
-
- 13.0 UnErase (UNERASE) DOS-based program
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- The DOS version of UnErase may run out of memory if you use the Change
- Directory or View All Directories commands on disks with many
- subdirectories, such as network disks. To avoid this problem, use the
- file list to navigate to the directory you want.
- =========================
- When files are deleted using the deltree command from a MS-DOS window
- in Windows 95, then you cannot use the "Unerase" button in the main
- UnErase/DX dialog to recover any of these files. When you select
- File-->View all directories and try to recover, you will get the error
- message "Error reading directory. It may be erased". To work around
- this, use the File-->Unerase To command instead.
-
-
- 14.0 Disk Editor (DISKEDIT) DOS-based program
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Under DOS 5, insufficient conventional memory may cause system
- instability. You must have at least 500K of conventional memory for
- stable operation.
-
-
- 15.0 UnFormat (UNFORMAT) DOS-based program
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Long file names are not recoverable on floppy disks.
- =========================
- UnFormat will not work on compressed disks.
-
