- HELP!
- Almost every support call that comes in is about the specifics of
- loading a Package onto the Newton. Hopefully the below instructions
- will help!
-
- Newton Instructions for PC Users
-
- Put CD in
-
- Run Windows
-
- Open the directory where the program is located that you will use
- to load packages. Newton Connection Kit, etc.
-
- Click on "D" or CD Directory
-
- You will see a pkgs directory which contains all the packages.
-
- You should see a readme.txt - open and read.
-
- To go to files
- (all Newton files end in .pkg, text ends in .txt)
- Open pkgs directory.
-
- Pick a category, like GAME_EDU - double click. There will be
- 1, 2 and ALL directories in it.
- Pick the directory that contains packages for the Newton OS
- you will use.
- 1 - Newton 1.x packages.
- 2 - Newton OS 2.x Required.
- ALL - works on all Newtons.
-
- Double click on a directory. It Includes a .pkg file
- for the Newton, and read-me's. Always read the documentation
- before loading.
-
- To Install packages onto the Newton
- Use the Newton Connection Utilities if you have a new Newton.
-
- Apple's Newton Installer
- Another alternative is to use Apple's Newton Installer.
- Apple's Newton Installer (is called newtinst.exe) and is located
- in pkgs/Pc-tools/1/Newtinst.EXE.
-
- 1.x users:
- The newtinst.exe file is the one to use to install ALL Newton
- packages (.pkg files) for 1.x users. Simply drag and drop
- packages on it to install them or-
-
- Double click newtinst.exe file. Go to Menu at top of screen, to File,
- and select Install Package. You'll be presented with a dialog box
- asking what you want to install. You must navigate to that package.
- Now, double click pkgs directory, then double click Game_edu and All
- directory, and last, double click Smalquiz. Then, on the
- left, you'll see Smalquiz.pkg. Just double click and it'll load into
- your Newton using the serial cable. On the Newton, open the Extras
- drawer, tap on Connection, select DOS or Windows PC, and hit Connect.
- The package should now start loading. If there are problems, you may
- have to play with the preferences in the newtinst.exe program.
-
- 2.x users:
- You can use NCU if you are running a 2.0 system.
- Read the documentation that came with these tools to
- install packages.
-
- Stuffit
- As a result of the Totally Incomplete CD-ROM for Newton
- becoming too full. We have had to leave the books
- compressed in Stuffit format. To decompress them use SITEX10.
-
- Stuffit expander is in the
- PDA10/PKGS/BOOKS/SITEX10.
-
- Be sure you TURN OFF THE RESOURCE FORK SAVING.
-
- Set the Options on Expander to
- Cross Platform... MacBinary.... NEVER
-
- Stuffing these files allows us to include more items and
- you can use expander on the ftp files too!
