  1. HELP!
  2. Almost every support call that comes in is about the specifics of
  3. loading a Package onto the Newton. Hopefully the below instructions
  4. will help!

  6. Newton Instructions for PC Users
  7.  
  8. Put CD in
  9.  
  10. Run Windows
  11.  
  12. Open the directory where the program is located that you will use 
  13. to load packages. Newton Connection Kit, etc.
  14.  
  15. Click on "D" or CD Directory
  16.  
  17. You will see a  pkgs directory which contains all the packages.
  18.  
  19. You should see a readme.txt - open and read. 
  20.  
  21. To go to files
  22. (all Newton files end in .pkg, text ends in .txt)
  23. Open pkgs directory.
  24.  
  25. Pick a category, like GAME_EDU - double click. There will be 
  26. 1, 2 and ALL directories in it.
  27. Pick the directory that contains packages for the Newton OS
  28. you will use.
  29. 1 - Newton 1.x packages.
  30. 2 - Newton OS 2.x Required.
  31. ALL - works on all Newtons.

  33. Double click on a  directory. It Includes a .pkg file
  34. for the Newton, and  read-me's. Always read the documentation
  35. before loading.

  37. To Install packages onto the Newton
  38. Use the Newton Connection Utilities if you have a new Newton.

  40. Apple's Newton Installer
  41. Another alternative is to use Apple's Newton Installer.
  42. Apple's Newton Installer (is called newtinst.exe) and is located
  43. in pkgs/Pc-tools/1/Newtinst.EXE.
  44.  
  45. 1.x users:
  46. The newtinst.exe file is the one to use to install ALL Newton
  47. packages (.pkg files) for 1.x users. Simply drag and drop 
  48. packages on it to install them or-
  49.  
  50. Double click newtinst.exe file. Go to Menu at top of screen, to File,
  51. and select Install Package. You'll be presented with a dialog box
  52. asking what you want to install. You must navigate to that package.
  53. Now, double click pkgs directory, then double click Game_edu and All
  54. directory, and last, double click Smalquiz. Then, on the
  55. left, you'll see Smalquiz.pkg. Just double click and it'll load into
  56. your Newton using the serial cable. On the Newton, open the Extras
  57. drawer, tap on Connection, select DOS or Windows PC, and hit Connect.
  58. The package should now start loading. If there are problems, you may
  59. have to play with the preferences in the newtinst.exe program.

  61. 2.x users:
  62. You can use NCU if you are running a 2.0 system. 
  63. Read the documentation that came with these tools to 
  64. install packages.

  66. Stuffit
  67. As a result of the Totally Incomplete CD-ROM for Newton
  68. becoming too full. We have had to leave the books 
  69. compressed in Stuffit format. To decompress them use SITEX10. 
  70.  
  71. Stuffit expander is in the 
  72. PDA10/PKGS/BOOKS/SITEX10.
  73.  
  74. Be sure you TURN OFF THE RESOURCE FORK SAVING.

  76. Set the Options on Expander to
  77. Cross Platform... MacBinary.... NEVER
  78.  
  79. Stuffing these files allows us to include more items and
  80. you can use expander on the ftp files too!
