- VFXLIB V0.95

- Permission is granted to use, copy or redistribute this executable so long
- as it is not modified and that is is not sold for profit.
-
-
- Purpose : A "librarian" under Windows 3.1 for the Ensoniq VFX synth familly.
- ---------
-
- Note : This version (V0.95) has only been tested on a 486 computer with a
- ------ Musiq Quest Midi card (MPU 401 compatible) under Windows 3.1 and a SD1 synth.
- However, it should work as well as previous version (V0.9) for which no
- problems were reported to me.
-
- There is no plan for a subsequent version, but you may have a look at
- SoundLib, my future muti-synth shareware librarian.
-
- SoundLib is due to be out in spring of 1995, and it will implement a real library
- where you'll be able to put and retrieve all the patches you own.

- User guide
- ------------
-
-
- Overview :
- ----------
- When you launch VFXLIB.EXE, a window appears with 2 lists.
- The first list (on the left), is the Librarian list : all you can do with this list is
- loading a bank from your hard-drive.
- The second list (on the right) is the Bank List. You can modify this list by
- adding (with the "Write" button) patches selected in the Librarian list.
- You can also modify the name of a patch in the Bank list by double-clicking on it.
- Then, you can save the edited Bank in a file or you can send it to the synth.
- Above each list, there is a test button, that lets you hear the selected patch by loading
- it in the edit buffer of the synth.
- Cakewalk owners can also load a bank in the "patches.ini" file by using the
- "Copy to Cakewalk" function.
-
-
- Install :
- ---------
- create a new directory, and decompress the archive file VFXLIB.ZIP in that
- directory.
- If you want to use vfxlib with cakewalk, you must edit the vfxlib.ini file
- to enter the complete path for the patches.ini file.
- Then launch vfxlib and choose "Midi/Configure". If you have several midi ports,
- choose the good "Midi In" and "Midi Out" port for your VFX.
- You can add VFXLIB to the program manager by selecting "New..." in the file manager's
- "File" menu (Don't forget to put the working directory to where your .syx files are).
-
-
- Note :
- - Midi In port doesn't matter since the "Midi/Receive" function is not available.
- - You must select 1 as the base channel on your synth (it's on the "Midi Control"
- pages of the VFX).
-
- Instructions :
- --------------
-
- When a bank is loaded into a list, each patch appears in this form :
- <nb> [<bk>-<x>] <name>
-
- <nb> is the number of the patch in the bank, beginning at 1.
-
- <bk> corresponds to one of the 10 "bank buttons" on the synth and is numbered
- from 0 to 9.
-
- <x> is the number of a patch on the VFX page and is numbered from 1 to 6.
-
- Menus :
- -------
-
- "Librarian List" menu :
- Open : lets you choose a fileName containing either a bank of 60 patchs
- or a single patch, and loads it into the "Librarian List". This list
- cannot be edited, but you can copy patches from it to the "Bank List"
- using the "Write Button".
-
-
- "Bank List" menu :
- New : This load an empty bank into the "Bank List". A previously
- loaded bank in this list is erased (but you are warned if the bank was
- modified).
-
- Open : lets you choose a fileName containing a bank of 60 patchs
- and loads it into the "Bank List".
-
- Save : Save the current bank. If the bank is new, you are prompted for its name.
-
- Save As : lets you enter a filename in which you will save the bank
- you edited in "Bank List".
-
- Save Selected Patch : lets you save the single patch that is selected in the
- "Bank List". A filename is automatically built from the patch name, but you
- can overwrite it.
-
- Copy To Cakewalk :
- Note : This has only been tested with Cakewalk 2.0 for Windows.
- This function lets you copy the patchs names of the loaded bank into
- the patches.ini file. Then (after restarting Cakewalk), you can choose
- the patches in Cakewalk tracks by using their names.
- Specials program numbers (124 to 128) are also copied, letting you select
- the appropriate bank from the synth. To do so, you must assign two tracks
- to the same midi channel. On the 1st track, choose the patch you want to
- use. On the 2nd track, select the bank (ROM 0, ROM 1, Internal...) by
- choosing the corresponding Special Number. (You may have to go back to the
- begining of the tracks for the changes to take place).
-
- "midi" menu :
- Send : The bank previously loaded into the "Bank List" is sent to the
- synth, using the Midi Out device you selected with "Midi/Configure".
- A pop-up shows you the progression of the Midi transfert, and you can abort
- it by pressing the "Abort" button (doing so, the first patches should be
- loaded correctly).
-
-
- Receive : Not implemented...
-
- Configure : This lets you select the Midi In and Midi Out ports you want to use.
-
- "help" menu :
- About : Shows a copyright notice.
-
- =================================
- Here are some "How to" :
-
- hear a patch from a list :
- --------------------------
- Select the patch you want to hear and press the test button above the list.
- The patch is now loaded in the edit buffer of the synth and you can play on
- your keyboard to hear how it sounds.
-
- Change the name of a patch :
- ------------------------------
- To change the name of a patch in the "Bank List", just double-
- click on it. A popup-window appears in which you can edit the
- name.
-
- Copy patchs from the "Library List" to the "Bank List" :
- -----------------------------------------------------------
-
- This is very simple : select one or more patches in
- the "Library List", select the destination into the first list,
- and just press the "Write" button.
- On the "Library List", you can select or deselect a patch by
- control-clicking on it with the left mouse button. To select adjacent
- patches, use shift + left button instead.
- This feature is very usefull for building a new bank by picking out
- patches from several other banks, or for changing the layout
- of patches into a single bank.
-
- Quit :
- ----------
- To quit VFXLIB, choose "close" into the system menu of
- the window. You should be warned if your last edits were not saved.
-
-
-
- That's all,
-
- Enjoy !
