- ---------------------
- READ THIS PLEASE
-
- First unzip the file TUSF.ZIP and run Install from within Windows.
- The Install Kit will then guide you trough the installation process.
-
- This software is supposed to run with windows 95 and 3.1x (uses WIN32
- functions - reports if it works without WIN32 expansion installed). It is a
- 16 bit application.
- I haven't checked it yet with NT. Should work anyway...
-
- - IMPORTANT, MAY CAUSE MALFUNCTION -
- A TEMP directory must be available in C:\TEMP. Temporary files will be saved in
- with the name TEMP.WAV and TEMP.BAK. Create this directory before running TUSF
-
- BWCC and CTL3DV2 dynamic link libraries (DLLs) are shipped in this package
- Installation will copy them in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
- If you do not trust the setup kit, modify the entries in file DISK.1 or
- backup your originals.
-
- BWCC is the Borland Window Custom Control Library
- CTL3DV2 is the Microsoft Windows 3D Control Library

- What the Hell is this stuff ?
- -----------------------------
-
- The Ultimate Sound Factory is an easy-to-use Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
- software designed for Windows on a PC, so if you've got a Sun Sparc XXXXII
- Workstation, you can spare yourself the download.
-
- System Requirement:
-
- - a PC.
-
- If you intend to work with large samples (actually over 10,000 bytes), I
- recommend something with a good processing power, say a Pentium, although
- it works perfectly well on my 486DX2-66. A 65536 points FFT is performed
- in less than 1 minute on my DX266. A 65536 points DFT is useless but should
- be performed in something like 2 days (at least) so don't use this archaic
- feature.
- NOTE: You'll also need a MathCoprocessor. If you haven't and still want to run
- tusf, send me an email and I'll recompile it especially for you with floating
- point emulation (what a nice guy I am...)
-
- - a SoundCard.
-
- I've got an old 8 bit SoundBlaster, and it works with the win95 SB drivers
- installed. I even get basic full duplex record/playback! 16 bit samples
- are now supported although I haven't been able to test the feature. Report
- bugs and misbehaviour... FFT output is still 8 bit. That's far enough to
- detect peaks.
-
- - memory.
-
- Huge amount of memory is great. Less is worse.
- It works perfectly well with 8 Mb. Should be fantastic with 64Mb... ;)
-
- - disk space.
-
- Windows swaps often if you try an FFT on a 200Kb sample.
- Tusf is something like 900 Kb with the DLLs and the examples.
-
- - a SVGA card.
-
- Tusf looks really fine on a 1024x768 board.
- If someone explains me how to make 256 colors in C, I would put a few nice
- effects which I haven't yet managed to do.
- NOTE: Using Win95 "small fonts" or 640x480 display may mess up with the
- screen.
-
- - a basic knowledge of how DSP works.
-
- If you haven't that, just take a quick look at the helpfile.
-
- Beware!!! TUSF is not supposed to be professional stuff. I developped it
- because I was bored to death waiting for the French National Service. Don't
- expect to much... But if it fits your requirements then I would be more than
- glad to hear from you and design a few more personalised features.
-
-
- * 3 *
- What can I do with that ?
- -------------------------
-
- Well, that's your problem, but this software is for DSP which is filtering,
- spectrum analysis, signal analysis, noise reduction and a lot of other
- things that I let you discover.
- In addition, Tusf reads IFF-Amiga, WAV and headerless samples. 01/97 release
- can also record huge samples.
-
- * 4 *
- Is Tusf free ?
- --------------
-
- YES, it is. But if you want to send me something, you're welcome. Money
- is accepted (:-]. A postcard would be also nice.
-
- * 5 *
- Is there a user support for Tusf ?
- ----------------------------------
-
- I usually respond to email...
-
- * 6 *
- Will there be other versions ?
- ------------------------------
-
- There are currently two releases of Tusf: 11/96 and 01/97.
- 01/97 is far better than 11/96 which was awfully crippled.
- Disabled menu items may be enabled in a next version...
-
- * 7 *
- Troublshooting
- --------------
-
- Well it works at home (486DX2/66 8Mb Ram running Windoze95), I'm waiting for
- your bugs reports.
-
- KNOWN BUGS:
- Version 11/96
- - unexpected crash due to memory allocation malfunction (Windoze bug)
- - garbage on some displays
- - bogus SAVE DFT function
- - saves into a corrupted WAV format
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The author cannot be responsible for any damage caused by this software
- Fortunately it seems fairly stable... ;-)
- This software is free. You can distribute it as much as you want as far as
- this Readme.txt file is included in the distribution without any modification
-
- IMPORTANT:
- Feel free to send your comments and report any bugs you may find. I really
- want to hear from you.

-
- ---------------------
- History:
- ---------------------
-
- November 1996 Release:
- - bugs:
- A major bug in the malloc functions caused the software to sometimes crash.
- A minor bug in the SAVE/DFT function could garbage the saved file (?)
- An awful bug in the Save Sample function produces corrupted WAV files
- Display trash if in 640x480 in the filter factory or in "small font" mode
- Lame installation program (really lame)
- Filterfactory crashed if user enters craps for parameters - your fault anyway
-
- January 1997 Release:
- + previous bugs fixed
- + add a nice installation program thanks to LZ Install Kit
- + add experimental deformation routines (sinusoid modulation)
- + add compression stat routines - experimental
- + include 4 WAV examples - 440.wav and 440-f.wav (f means "filtered")
- and djidji.wav and djidji-f.wav -> that's me playing the deedjeeridoo!
- + add record sample function - huge sample allowed (I tried it with a 4
- minutes sample and it didn't crash... but behaves strangely with 5 min?)
- now need WIN32 to work (?) <- report if you have it work without Win32
- + optimized Sample display on main window - faster but not so nice.
- + add an "Interactive Time Mode" to check sample duration
- + add full 16 bit support but not tested (lack of 16 bit soundcard)
- report malfunctions please.
- + add standard clipboard Cut/Copy/Paste functions (not OLE compliant)
