- FX V1-5, 6th July 1996
- ======================
-
- Introduction
- ============
-
- This is version 1-50 of FX, a sound processor and sound effects generator
- for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. This readme file contains installation
- instructions and warnings, please read it before installing FX. The
- remainder of this README file assumes you are reasonably familiar with
- DOS and Windows.

- Warnings
- ========
-
- Please be aware of two risks:
-
- 1. I use FX at home but it's not a commercial product and as such
- hasn't been exhaustively tested (what did you expect for free?). It's
- therefore possible that it may behave unpredictably; make sure you
- save all important data before running FX. I'm sorry if this sounds
- alarmist, I have been using FX myself for some time and know of no
- serious bugs it's but it's an unfortunate fact of life that any
- misbehaving Windows application can crash your complete Windows system
- so please take care.
-
- 2. FX generates both WAV files and direct output for your sound card.
- It's possible to use FX to generate frequencies and power levels that
- can't be found in normal music. It's therefore theoretically possible
- to overload something connected to the sound card output (e.g.
- speakers, an external amplifier or your ears!). Again I must stress
- that I haven't been able to do this on my system but I can't
- discount the possibility that someone somewhere could do so. When
- you're experimenting with FX things to do include (but aren't limited
- to): a) make sure that you have output volumes set to a very low level
- when first playing new sounds b) don't use headphones, c) disconnect
- external kit such as amps.
-
-
- Hardware and software requirements
- ==================================
-
- Any PC running Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 with a minimum of 3.0Mb free disk
- space and a 16 bit sound card. FX can be very processor hungry so faster
- PCs are better. The help file talks in more detail about hardware
- requirements and performance issues. Note that a 16 bit sound card is
- mandatory.
-
- You will also require a copy of PKUNZIP to unpack the files.
-
-
- Installation
- ============
-
- As this is a freeware product I haven't written a slick installation
- utility so please follow the instructions below:
-
- 1. Create a directory for FX (e.g. c:\FX). If the FX directory already exists
- from a previous installation delete all files from the previous version.
-
- 2. Copy the file FX.ZIP into the directory created in (1).
-
- 3. Unpack the file using PKUNZIP - i.e:
-
- C:\FX> PKUNZIP FX
-
- 4. This will result in FX.EXE, FX.HLP, CTL3DV2.DLL and a small
- collection of files with the extension .LYT.
-
- 5. If you don't already have a copy of the file CTL3DV2.DLL in your
- windows system directory copy it over. The command for Windows
- 3.1 users with Windows installed in the usual place is:
-
- COPY CTL3DV2.DLL C:\Windows\system
-
- If you already have a copy of this file in the system directory
- you can ignore this step.
-
- 6. Delete CTL3DV2.DLL from the directory you created in (1). If you omit
- this step FX will display an error message saying that CTL3DV2 hasn't
- been correctly installed.
-
- 7. Create a program manager or task bar entry for C:\FX\FX and you're ready
- to run.
-
- 8. Run the program, click the help button and read the help file to
- get instructions on using FX. The LYT files contain FX "layouts", these
- are graphical FX configurations which generate sounds. Try loading
- them to see some examples of how you can use FX.
-
-
- For users of FX V1-0
- ====================
-
- The help file contains a detailed list of updates and changes. Highlights
- include new tools including filters, various UI improvements, better internal
- algorithms, more examples and a host of bug fixes and minor improvements.
- Unfortunately layouts created with FX V1-0 cannot be read by V1-5 as the LYT
- file format has changed. Sorry.
