- General README File for ftp-os2.cdrom.com and ftp-os2.nmsu.edu
- Revised April 16, 1993
-
- Welcome to the Internet's OS/2 archives at ftp-os2.cdrom.com and
- ftp-os2.nmsu.edu!
-
- Both ftp-os2.cdrom.com and ftp-os2.nmsu.edu contain the latest in OS/2
- shareware and freeware for IBM's popular 32-bit DOS and Windows compatible
- operating system for PC compatibles. Each site mirrors the other -- files
- available at ftp-os2.cdrom.com are also available at ftp-os2.nmsu.edu, and
- vice versa. You may use whichever site you find more convenient, network
- conditions permitting.
-
- No warranties, expressed or implied, apply to any software or
- information obtained from this site.
-
- This site contains these primary subdirectories:
-
- /os2/ibm Files located below this subdirectory are also
- found at software.watson.ibm.com -- this directory
- provides a "mirror" of that site.
- /os2/2.1 Files located below this subdirectory are intended for
- IBM OS/2 2.1 only.
- /os2/2.x Files located below this subdirectory are intended for
- IBM OS/2 2.x only. Software is typically 32-bit code,
- and the information files deal with tips and software
- specific to these versions of OS/2.
- /os2/all Files located below this subdirectory are intended for
- all releases of OS/2.
- /os2/1.x Files located below this subdirectory are for use
- under OS/2 1.x only.
- /os2/new New additions to the Internet OS/2 archives
- are crosslisted here for a short time. Look for that
- latest bit of just released software in this
- directory.
-
- Subdirectories below each of these six are arranged by category. Files
- are often crosslisted in different directories for convenience.
-
- Since the ftp-os2.cdrom.com and ftp-os2.nmsu.edu OS/2 archives depend on
- volunteer submission of OS/2 software and information, you are encouraged
- to contribute any files that are not already located here. Put these new
- files in directory /os2/incoming on ftp-os2.cdrom.com, making sure that any
- necessary documentation accompanies them. Use a common archive format
- (e.g. ZIP) and transfer in "binary" or "tenex" mode (see below). (Uploads
- will not be accepted at ftp-os2.nmsu.edu.)
-
- You may also retrieve files in /os2/incoming that others have just recently
- submitted, but be aware that such files have not undergone any testing.
- When approved by the maintainer of these archive sites, these new files
- will be distributed through the Usenet's comp.binaries.os2 newsgroup and
- moved to their proper places in the archives. (For full submission
- guidelines, please consult the file /os2/all/info/startkit/policy.txt)
-
- To locate a particular file on ftp-os2.cdrom.com or ftp-os2.nmsu.edu,
- please retrieve (in ASCII mode) the /os2/00index.txt file. This file
- contains a complete listing, with one line descriptions, of all tested
- archives. (Files located in /os2/incoming are not listed in this index.)
-
- Files stored on ftp-os2.cdrom.com and ftp-os2.nmsu.edu are normally in the
- latest Zip archive format (as binary files), although some information
- files are stored in ASCII. This Zip format is compatible with
- PKWare's PKUNZIP Version 1.93 and later, and Info-Zip's UnZip Version
- 5.0 and later. An OS/2 version of UnZip (and the corresponding Zip
- utility) can be found in /os2/2.x/archivers (or /os2/all/archivers for
- the OS/2 1.x compatible version).
-
- When transfering binary files (Zip or otherwise) from ftp-os2.cdrom.com or
- ftp-os2.nmsu.edu, be sure to use your ftp software's "binary" or "tenex"
- mode.
-
- Note that while OS/2 2.x runs both DOS and Windows software exceedingly
- well, ftp-os2.cdrom.com and ftp-os2.nmsu.edu are not intended to duplicate
- the contents of the Internet's fine DOS and Windows archives. Please see
- the README files located in /os2/2.x/dos and /os2/2.x/windows,
- respectively, for information on the Internet's DOS and Windows archive
- sites.
-
- OS/2 beginners and experts alike will enjoy reading the Internet's OS/2
- Frequently Asked Questions List: User's Edition. The current release of
- this List can always be found in directory /os2/all/info/faq.
-
- While ftp-os2.cdrom.com and ftp-os2.nmsu.edu are open to all users at all
- hours (excepting any system or network outages), if you are accessing these
- sites from outside North America you may wish to consult the Frequently
- Asked Questions List for information on OS/2 archives located on other
- continents. The ftp-os2.cdrom.com archives are located in Walnut Creek,
- California. The ftp-os2.nmsu.edu archives are located on the campus of New
- Mexico State University in the United States.
-
- If you are having difficulty retrieving files from ftp-os2.cdrom.com or
- ftp-os2.nmsu.edu, please ask your local system administrator for
- assistance. If you still require help, or if you have any questions or
- comments regarding the OS/2 archives, please mail Michelle Molitor, the
- maintainer of these sites, at os2bin-request@csd4.csd.uwm.edu. This
- address is intended for questions relating specifically to these sites.
- Your more general OS/2 questions should be directed to the forums described
- in the OS/2 Frequently Asked Questions List, including the Usenet's various
- OS/2 newsgroups.
-
- By default, ftp-os2.nmsu.edu will send directory listings in a friendly,
- uncluttered format (with text descriptions). If you wish to include file
- dates in the directory listings, use the command:
-
- ls -d
-
- from your ftp software. (The ftp-os2.cdrom.com site uses the more
- traditional directory listing format for ftp sites.)
-
- The entire contents of the OS/2 archives on ftp-os2.cdrom.com (save the
- most recent submissions) are available on CD-ROM from Walnut Creek for
- $29.95 (plus shipping). To order phone 1 800 786 9907, +1 510 947-5996 or
- FAX +1 510 947-1644 or email info@cdrom.com.
-
- Again, welcome to the Internet OS/2 archives, and welcome to OS/2.
