- PC Paintbrush 5+
- Release Information / Read Me file
-
- Thank you for purchasing PC Paintbrush 5+, the latest in ZSoft's line of
- color and gray scale image editing products for DOS. This file contains
- specific release information that became available after the manuals
- went to print.
-
-
- Version Information
- --------- -----------------------------------------------------------
- 1.0 Initial Release. Please read notes, below.
-
-
- PC Paintbrush 5+ has additional scanner support. If you have
- the Marstek M-6000CG or the Intel Satisfaxtion scanner, see
- Scanner Information below.
-
- PC Paintbrush 5+ has added three-pass color scanning.
- Therefore, the Howtek Personal Color Scanner and the
- Microtek "Z" models can scan in color as well as gray
- scale and black and white.
-
- Support for the Princeton Graphics LS300 has been removed.
-
-
- Additional halftone patterns are available with the Options
- Image Type and Halftone command in scanning mode. These
- halftone patterns are available if your scanner supports
- them.
- The additional halftone patterns are the following:
-
- Error Diffusion: also known as Floyd and Steinberg. Best
- used on images that are composed of medium shades of
- similar hues, but that do not have a great deal of black
- and white. Preserves greatest detail on-screen and when
- printed.
-
- Scanner Defined 1 and Scanner Defined 2: any two
- additional halftone patterns available with certain
- scanners. For example, your scanner may be able to halftone
- in a diagonal line pattern.
-
-
- It is easy to start a gray scale picture in
- PC Paintbrush 5+.
- When you choose the File New command, you can choose
- to load either a gray scale palette, the current palette,
- or the standard PC Paintbrush palette.
- Choose Gray Scale to start a new picture with a gray
- scale palette.
- Choose Current to start a new picture with the palette
- you used last.
- Choose Standard to start a new picture with the standard
- PC Paintbrush palette.
-
-
- If you are applying a filter in the scanning mode,
- the filter affects just the area of the picture you
- see on your screen.
- If the picture is too big for your screen, you can
- try using the filters in the editing mode of PC
- Paintbrush. Use the Display Zoom Out command
- to zoom out until you see your entire picture. Then use
- the Box Selection, Scissors, or Magic Wand tool to define
- the area you want to change. Choose the Edit Filter
- command and choose the filter you want to use.
-
-
- Remove Spots is the only filter available for black and
- white pictures.
-
-
- Choose Options Brush Style to change the shape of all the
- paintbrush tools, as well as the Soft Airbrush, Line,
- Smudge Spraycan, and Clone tools.
-
- Double-clicking the Curve tool does not display the Select a
- Brush Style dialog box.
-
-
- If you are in an application other than PC Paintbrush and want
- to capture a screen in super VGA mode (640 x 480, 256 colors;
- 800 x 600, 16 colors; or higher), use BIGFRZ, a special
- version of Frieze that is included with PC Paintbrush 5+.
- For example, if your PAINT.BAT file has a command
- line that looks like this:
-
- FRIEZE HP300P P1 0000 ACNQ 640 480 4
-
- you would type this :
-
- BIGFRZ HP300P P1 0004 ACNQ 640 480 4
-
-
- If you are installed for a high resolution video mode
- (256 colors, 640 x 480 or higher), you might not have
- enough free memory to use the Scissors, Magic Wand, or Paint
- Roller tools, or to open or save a file in the GIF
- file format. You should have approximately 550 K memory
- available before you start PC Paintbrush 5+. For information
- about freeing memory, see your DOS manual.
-
- If you cannot free enough memory, you can try running
- TINYFRZ instead of FRIEZE. Use a text editor to change
- the batch file you use to start PC Paintbrush 5+ and
- replace FRIEZE in the batch file with TINYFRZ. You cannot
- print or capture your screen if you use TINYFRZ.
-
- If you continue to have memory problems, please call
- Technical Support to receive a different version of PC
- Paintbrush 5+. This version requires less memory to run,
- but is slower. Technical Support can be reached between
- 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern time at (404) 428-0008.
-
-
- If you have other problems loading a .GIF file, please call
- Technical Support. You may be asked to run GIFHDR.EXE,
- a utility that was copied to your PC Paintbrush directory
- during installation.
-
-
- If you need additional information or wish to check for driver
- availability, call the ZSoft Technical BBS at (404) 427-1045 or
- (404) 424-3146. Have your serial number to register for access.
-
-
- SCANNER INFORMATION
-
- Intel Satisfaxtion
-
- This scanner requires the SATISFAX.SYS driver supplied by the
- manufacturer, SAPI.EXE provided by ZSoft, and HHSCAND.SYS.
- You should use version 2.02 of HHSCAND.SYS. This version is available
- from Logitech's CompuServe Forum.
-
- Copy SATISFAX.SYS to your system according to the manufacturer's
- instructions. For more information, be sure to read SATISFAX.DOC
- and SAPI.DOC, which were copied to your system when you installed
- your scanner for use with PC Paintbrush.
-
- The Intel SATISFAX.SYS driver *MUST* precede the HHSCAND.SYS
- driver in CONFIG.SYS. If the SATISFAX.SYS driver is not loaded,
- the scanner will appear to work (the light will come on), but no data
- will be transferred and the scanner will time out.
-
- HHSCAND.SYS must be loaded from CONFIG.SYS and must be loaded before
- SAPI.EXE. The commands provided by the driver are listed below and
- must appear on the HHSCAND.SYS line of your CONFIG.SYS entry.
-
- CONFIG.SYS entry:
-
- The scanner driver entries in your CONFIG.SYS should look like
- this:
-
- device=SATISFAX.SYS
- device=HHSCAND.SYS
- device=SAPI.EXE
-
- Remember to include additional parameters if you want to use
- options other than the defaults. See your scanner manual for
- options available for the SATISFAX.SYS driver.
-
- Following are the options available for this scanner. If you use
- options other than the defaults, remember to add the parameter
- to the HHSCAND.SYS line of your CONFIG.SYS entry.
-
- /A=xxx Sets the base I/O address of the scanner. The two valid
- settings are 250 and 350. The default is 350.
- /I=x Sets the interrupt request number (IRQ).
- /D=x Sets the DMA channel.
-
-
- Marstek M-6000CG
-
- This scanner requires the SPI.EXE driver provided by ZSoft as well
- as the M1904.SYS driver provided by Marstek. Be sure to read the
- SPI.DOC file that was copied to your system for more information.
-
- CONFIG.SYS entries:
-
- The scanner driver entries in your CONFIG.SYS should look like this:
-
- device=M1904.SYS
- device=SPI.EXE
-
- Remember to include additional parameters if you want to use options
- other than the defaults.
-
- NOTE: The M1904.SYS driver seems to have several problems. One
- problem involves scanner setup. The only settings that appear to be
- available are DMA channel 1, interrupt 5, and scanner type 4.
- (device=m1904.sys d1 i5 s4).
-
-
- Mouse support
- -------------
-
- If you installed a drawing device other than a "Preinstalled Mouse
- (Generic)" during setup, you must load the mouse driver before you
- load the version of FRIEZE you want to use.
-
- If you use the PAINT.BAT file to start PC Paintbrush, the driver
- is loaded automatically. If you use the uniquely named batch file
- to start PC Paintbrush, you must load the driver at the DOS prompt.
- You can also add the driver command line to your uniquely named
- batch file. Use a text editor to add the device command line
- immediately above the line that loads FRIEZE.
-
-
- Running 1024x768 resolution with an interlaced monitor:
- ------------------------------------------------------
- If you are using a High Res VGA card at 1024x768 resolution with an
- interlaced monitor you may notice a "flickering" of your screen.
- This is a common problem when using an interlaced monitor with a
- halftone pattern. Use the File Open command from the main menu to
- open a new file and the flicker will stop. If you use an image with
- a similar halftone pattern, you will notice the flicker again.
-
-
- Using single button drawing tablets (digitizers):
- ------------------------------------------------
- If you are using a drawing device that has only one button on the pen
- barrel, you must select one of the 1 button type drawing devices in PBSETUP.
-
- YOU MUST DEPRESS THE ALT KEY WHEN PUSHING THE PEN TIP TO SIMULATE
- A RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON. PUSHING THE PEN TIP WITHOUT HOLDING DOWN THE ALT
- KEY IS THE SAME AS THE LEFT MOUSE BUTTON.
-
-
- Printing with Intel Visual Edge and DPTEK printing systems:
- ----------------------------------------------------------
- These printing systems require that enough EMS memory be available when
- you print to hold the entire printed image. They use standard EMS memory,
- as does PC Paintbrush 5+. Consequently, unless you have a lot
- of EMS memory, printing with these printers may fail due to Paintbrush's
- use of EMS to hold the image that is being edited. If your printouts
- are missing the bottom portion or fail entirely, the solution is to
- make Paintbrush not use EMS memory, so that it will be available at
- print time. To disable use of EMS memory in PC Paintbrush 5+,
- type "set ZEMS=0" at the DOS prompt. This sets up an environment
- variable called ZEMS, and sets its value to zero.
-
