- [1.0] IMPORTANT NOTE: WEBSLEUTH98 AND YOUR
- WEB BROWSER
-
- WebSleuth98 can be set to launch your default Web browser
- directly from within the program, by double-clicking on
- a reference in any of WebSleuth98's View windows. This
- feature will work with ANY 32-bit Web browser, INCLUDING
- Netscape Navigator(TM). Whichever is currently set to
- be your DEFAULT browser is the browser WebSleuth98 will
- launch.
-
- However, in order for this feature to work properly,
- your Windows 95 system must have certain system
- components which were not included in older versions
- of Windows 95. If your system is lacking these system
- components, you will get an error message when you
- attempt to launch an external Web browser from within
- WebSleuth98 . To fix this problem, you need to install
- Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 or above, which
- will replace the missing system components. YOU DO NOT
- NEED TO MAKE INTERNET EXPLORER YOUR
- DEFAULT BROWSER. You only need to install it.
- You can then continue using your existing Web browser as
- you did before. If you do not have Internet Explorer,
- you can install it from the WebSleuth98 CD-ROM, or you can
- download it free from Microsoft at the following URL:
-
- If you do not have Microsoft Internet Explorer installed
- on your system, you can still use WebSleuth98 , but you will
- not be able to view Web pages within WebSleuth98 (in the
- Web Page View) or launch your Web browser directly from
- WebSleuth98 .
-
-
- [2.0] Getting Started
-
- [2.1] If your Internet Provider is America Online:
-
- If you access the Internet via America Online (AOL), it is
- very important that you confirm you are using AOL v.3.0
- for Windows 95 (This is relatively new as of 10/96, and only
- available by download.*). To do this, Open America Online,
- go to Help--About America Online and read the version
- number there.
-
- *Important: While there is an AOL 3.0 that works in
- both Win 3.1 and Win95, only AOL 3.0 for Win 95 uses
- a 32-bit dialer, which is required by WebSleuth98 .
- (The version on disks being distributed by mail and
- magazine, etc., is the 16-bit, Windows 3.1 compatible
- version.) If you have the 16-bit version, you can
- connect to AOL and go to the Members Services
- area to download the new version.
-
- You must also have either Netscape 3.0 or later, or Internet
- Explorer installed in order to use WebSleuth98 with your AOL
- connection.
-
- Once you have the Win95 version, you first sign up on AOL as
- usual, then start up WebSleuth98 .
-
-
- [2.2] If your Internet Provider is Compuserve, MSN, or other
- with full PPP connection:
-
- If you use an independent ISP, CompuServe, or Microsoft
- Network [MSN], you need to use the Microsoft dialer
- supplied with Windows 95 to connect to the Internet.
-
- Compuserve and MSN users already have this installed,
- if you are already accessing the Internet through this
- account.
-
- 1. MSN USERS: MSN customers must be signed up for
- Internet privileges through Microsoft Network.
-
- 2. COMPUSERVE USERS: You must be using
- CompuServe 3.1 (or later), which makes use of
- the Microsoft dialer.
-
- 3. INDEPENDENT ISP USERS: If you are not currently
- configured to use the Windows 95 dial up networking,
- please use the following instructions to do so:
-
- If you are not currently using Windows 95 Dial-Up
- Networking, you may have to install this feature.
- To find out if you need to install it, choose the
- Start Button from the Windows 95 Task Bar to see
- the Start Menu. Under Accessories, look for Dial-Up
- Networking. If it is not present, you will need to
- install it (with TCP/IP capability).
-
- See your Windows 95 documentation for further
- information on how to install Dial-Up Networking.
- You can also contact your ISP for technical support.
