- 3Com U.S. Robotics CONNECTIONS CD-ROM
- version 5.3 NAM
- 11/23/98
-
- CONNECTIONS must be viewed with either Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 and
- above, or Netscape Navigator 3.01 and above.
-
- IMPORTANT NOTES AND LAST MINUTE INSTRUCTIONS:
- --------------------------------------------
-
- To best use your CONNECTIONS CD-ROM, you should be aware of the
- following issues:
-
- * Always make sure the CONNECTIONS CD is in your CD-ROM drive before
- attempting to launch CONNECTIONS.
-
- * Please set your color display to 16-bit color or better. At lower
- color depths, some of CONNECTIONS' features may not run properly.
- In Windows 95, you can change your color depth from the Start bar
- by selecting "Settings," then "Control Panels," then "Display."
- Click on the "Settings" tab and adjust to either "16-bit" or
- "24-bit".
-
- * Netscape users: After installing CONNECTIONS, you might need to adjust
- your view settings back. Simply start Netscape, go to 'View' and click
- 'Show Navigation Toolbar', then 'Show Location Toolbar.' This should
- bring any buttons to the web address box back at the top. Depending which
- resolution you're running, the Netscape window might not load at full
- view. Click on the maximize window button at the top right corner
- (shaped like a square, in-between the _minimize button and X close
- button) to run at full screen mode. *Note: if you've choosen to use
- an older, Netscape 3.x browser, do not resize at the Main Menu screen.
- Click on a category you're interested in, then resize the window.
-
- * If you are having difficulty using the Adobe Acrobat reader to
- view the modem User Guides within CONNECTIONS: quit CONNECTIONS,
- open the Acrobat Reader as a standalone application, and open
- the appropriate user guide .PDF file from Acrobat's File menu.
- The User Guide files and their locations on the CD are:
-
- Faxmodem(Internal & External)56K \CONTENT\MANUALS\56kmodem\universal.pdf
- Voice Faxmodem 56K \CONTENT\MANUALS\56kmodem\universal.pdf

-
- * Snap Starter Kit Tutorial: The first time you open the tutorial and click on
- 'Exit' or 'Back To CONNECTIONS' the program will sometimes close Snap and
- return you to the desktop. If you click on either of these buttons in the
- future, CONNECTIONS will then be brought up in its own window.
-
- * Netscape 3.x, NT 4.0 and CONNECTIONS: We recommend not trying to run
- CONNECTIONS in NT 4.0 with an older Netscape 3.x browser. You may experience
- java scripting issues and/or random crashes. Please update to the Netscape
- 4.06 or Internet Explorer 4.01 included free with this CD.
-
- * Internet Service Providers and Modems: Make sure your modem is properly
- installed and configured before installing any of these services.
- The software will check modem settings at the end of the install, and need
- to get a correct configuration for it to install properly.
-
- * Windows 3.1 and Internet Explorer 4.01: If you see a "WINDOWS ONLY"
- message for some products on the CONNECTIONS CD, follow these simple
- directions.
- -If you're running CONNECTIONS, exit the program.
- -Go to the 'Program Manager' and open Internet Explorer 4.01, then close it.
- -Go back and run CONNECTIONS again. The "INSTALL SOFTWARE" button should
- now be available for all the programs that work with Windows 3.1.
-
- * Prodigy and Windows 95: If you're running the early versions of Windows 95
- (4.00.950 or 4.00.950A), you may experience problems with the Prodigy
- install after rebooting. If you update your Windows 95 to a more current
- version, this should eliminate the problem. Go to the Microsoft site:
- to download Windows 95 OSR2.
-
- * MindSpring and Windows 95: You must have your modem connected before
- starting to install this software. We also strongly recommend having a 4.x
- version browser (Internet Explorer 4.01 is included on the CD) if doing the
- MID install option. During the install, you'll be asked for a 'User ID' and
- 'Password,' or to setup a 'new account.' Click on the box 'new account' and
- continue with the install. After your PC reboots, you may see a Internet
- Signup box with a message, "Invalid command line." Simply click on 'OK' and
- then double-click on the 'Signup for MindSpring' icon and follow the
- instructions. (I'd also be a good idea to have you Windows 95 CD handy if
- needed.)
-
- * CONNECTIONS and Web Links: When running the CONNECTIONS CD and clicking on
- live web links, be sure to close the link window after visiting the site.
- If you minimize it into the background, future links you click on will also
- load minimized in the background where you can't view them until closing
- CONNECTIONS separately. If you find a site you're interested in visiting
- again, a handy way of saving web addresses quickly to your bookmarks is to
- press the [Ctrl] and [D] keys together at the same time. You can later load
- your web browser when online and go to your bookmarks section to find the
- web link addresses saved there by name.
-
- * Netscape 4.04 in Windows 3.1x: If you're running this version of Netscape
- in the Windows 3.1x OS, you may experience general protection errors when
- you exit, and errors installing software off CONNECTIONS. We advise you to
- upgrade to Netscape 4.05, or Internet Explorer 4.01 which are both included
- on the CONNECTIONS CD for free.
-
- * If your browser is not running in kiosk mode (has the buttons and web
- address area at the top), we recommend your resolution to be set to 800x600
- or higher. Go into: Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display and Settings.
- Within this area is a box labeled 'Display area'. Move the bar to the right
- so it's at least 800x600, click 'Apply' and 'OK'. After rebooting, you'll
- be able to see more of the CONNECTIONS interface.
-
- * Netscape 3.x and CONNECTIONS: On the main menu screen, you may notice the
- text animation overlaps after you've moved the cursor over them. This is a
- java scripting issue, but does not effect the performance or installation of
- any software on the CD.
-
- * If you've installed a program that doesn't uninstall completely, please
- check the individual company's website for updates and support to their
- product, or contact them directly. Programs that leave desktop shortcuts can
- be easily dragged into the recycling bin to be deleted.
-
- * When web browsing on the Internet, be aware there may be security issues to
- consider. We recommend checking for security updates and patches for
- Netscape and Internet Explorer regularly. You'll find updates to Netscape at:
- Internet Explorer updates can be found at:
-
- * Before calling tech support, you might want to check the readme files for
- Netscape or Internet Explorer, along with their on-line sources. For
- Netscape 4.06 in Windows 3.1x, you can go to their web site of known issues
- at:
- For Internet Explorer 4.01 in Windows 3.1x, you can get information through
- their dedicated newsgroup:
