- WELCOME
-
- To help you get started, Web America Networks has provided you with Microsoft
- Internet Explorer, which includes the basic Windows95 Internet features you
- will need. These include a web browser, email and a news reader.
-
- Of course, there are a number of Internet products on the market today.
- Examplesinclude the commercial version of Internet Explorer, Netscape
- Navigator and others. If you wish to use other Internet software (that
- you may already own) you can do so without any difficulty since the interface
- between your software and Web America Networks' access services are
- standardized. Any product that conforms to the standards will work fine,
- including those for Macintosh(R) and UNIX(R).
-
- Versions for these OSs may be included with your CD, but they are not officially
- supported by WANS. They will be located in the "Options" directory on your
- CD-ROM, along with versions of Internet Explorer that do not require the use
- of the signup server.
-
- No matter what software you are using, you will go through the same basic steps.
- Set up your communications hardware.
- Make sure the dial-up networking is installed
- Make sure the Internet (TCP/IP) protocol is installed and configured
- Create a connection to Web America Networks (automatically or manually)
- Dial Web America Networks
-
- The sections that follow give you a step-by-step explanation of the process. The
- information you will need (such as user name, password, dialing numbers) has
- been included in the welcome letter you received with this sign-up kit.
-
- The first section that follows explains how to set up the software on Windows95.
- The second section outlines the details you would need if you already have a
- browser and just want to begin using Web America Networks as your new
- Internet Service Provider.
-
- As with any new software installation, it is always a good idea to close other
- applications and backup your system before proceeding.
-
-
- Windows95
-
- Here's a quick look at the steps required for connecting to the Internet by using
- Dial-Up Networking in Windows95. The automatic installation process will guide
- you through most of these steps.
-
- Version 3.02 of the Microsoft Internet Explorer software is included on your
- CD-ROM if you are using the Windows95 operating system. This is the latest
- version of Explorer and includes many new features, such as security and an
- integrated email reader.
-
-
- Basic Installation
- Step 1 -- Starting Setup
-
- Insert the CD-ROM into the CD drive (usually D:\). Windows95 should
- automatically start the application and display the Web America Networks
- startup screen. If youhave previously installed Microsoft Internet Explorer
- you will start at step 5. If you wish to completely re-install the software,
- you should remove the existing version first using the "Add/Remove Programs"
- option on the Control Panel. You should ALWAYS remove a "beta version" you
- may have installed.
-
- If it does not start within about 30 seconds choose "Run" from the START
- button and type "D:\Setup.exe". Choose "Install Internet Explorer" on the
- "Web America Networks" screen to start the installation process.
-
- Step 2 -- Licensing
-
- Once you have chosen to install the software you will be presented with a license
- agreement for the Microsoft Internet Explorer. There is no charge for the
- software, but you should read the agreement carefully before proceeding.
- Choose "yes" if you wish to accept the agreement and continue the installation
- process.
-
- Step 3 -- Choosing Components
-
- Once you have accepted the license agreement, the installation kit will copy a
- number of programs to your computer. It is possible to select which components
- of the Explorer software you wish to install. The Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Setup will prompt you with "Would you like to select which optional Internet
- Components are installed?" Most users will choose "no" and install all the
- components available.
-
- The next screen, titled "Optional Components" will present you with a set of
- check boxes. If you choose to install only some of the components you can
- do so by checking or unchecking the boxes on the form. Some of the features,
- such as Internet chat and Internet conferencing may not be available at the
- time you sign up. It does no harm to install these now if you may be interested
- in using them at a later date. Click "OK" to continue.
-
- Next, you will be prompted for the directory in which to install Internet Explorer
- on a screen titled "Internet Explorer Installation". You have the choice of
- "C:\Program Files" and "Other location". It is recommended that you take the
- default as shown by Windows (the filled-in dot).
-
- The components you have selected (of all) will be installed. You will see a
- progress screen titled "Installation Status" that highlights the components as
- they are installed.
-
- Step 4 - Rebooting
-
- It is necessary for the computer to reboot before the new software can be
- completely installed. Choose "yes" to reboot the computer when you get the
- "Microsoft Internet Explorer Setup" screen that asks you about rebooting.
- If the system does not reboot, you should choose "Shutdown" from the
- Windows95 START button.
-
- Step 5A - Automatic Configuration
-
- Once the system has rebooted, click on the "Internet" icon on the desktop. This
- will start the Internet Explorer and begin the final personalization of the
- program. The system will open the a graphic screen that displays the "Sign Up
- Now" banner.
-
- Pressing the "Connect to Server" button will connect you to Web America
- Networks' Registration Server. It is important that you NOT CHANGE the
- user name for this portion of the process. The user name should always be
- "signup" and the password should be "NOPASSWD". This login will only allow
- you to connect to the registration server.
-
- Once connected, the Registration Server will display the "Sign Up Now"
- screen. Select the "Complete Registration" button to proceed.
-
- You will then be prompted for the user name and password assigned to you by
- Customer Service. After you have entered the information and pressed the
- "Submit" button the system will download the personalization file and modify
- our Internet Explorer automatically. This should only take a few seconds.
- You will then be disconnected and ready to "surf the net"!
-
-
- Step 5B - Manual Configuration
-
- If you have a different web browser, or elect to install Internet Explorer
- manually you must follow the steps outlined below to connect to Web America
- Networks Servers.
-
- When the system reboots you will be prompted to create a dialing script that
- will enable your computer to communicate with the Internet via Web America
- Networks. The installation kit comes with a wizard that will guide you through
- the process. You should have received an introductory letter with your sign-up
- kit that contains all the information you will need to complete the forms that
- follow. The process will take no more than about 5 minutes, and once completed
- you will able to get on the Internet immediately. The initial screen for the
- dialup wizard is titled "Internet Connection Wizard" and has the label "Get
- Connected". Click on "next" to begin.
-
- Choose the MANUAL option on the "Setup Options" screen. This will ensure that
- the setup wizard provides you with the options you need.
- You will probably just click "next" on the "Welcome to Internet Setup" screen,
- but if you desire to read some general help information, you have the option to
- click on "help" before proceeding.
-
- You will be connecting to Web America Networks over your phone line, so click
- on the "phone line" option on the "How to Connect" screen, then click "next".
-
- Step 6 - Enabling Email
-
- Microsoft Internet Explorer includes a feature that enables you to read your
- email from the browser. If you wish to use this feature, click on "yes" on
- the "Internet Mail" screen. Most users will want to use this option, but some
- may already have an email reader that they prefer. If so, you may still use
- Explorer, but without the email reader. As usual, click on "next" when you
- are finished.
-
- Step 7 - Installing Files
-
- The installation kit will prepare the files you need once you click on "next"
- on the "Installing Files" screen. Your CD-ROM should still be in the drive.
-
- Some users may see additional screen at this point if they have just installed
- a new modem in their machine. The screens are the same as those that appear
- in the Windows 3.1 section on installing a new modem. The wizard will detect
- your modem and configure it, but if you want to manually adjust the settings
- you have the option to do so.
-
- Step 8 - Adding Information About Using Web America Networks
-
- Now that you have chosen the features you want, it is time to create a entry
- that tells your software how to dial up Web America Networks' modems. Start
- by entering "WANS" on the "Service Provider Information" screen. Click "next"
-
- Your welcome letter will contain information about the product that you have
- purchased and the local dialing number that you will use to get access. You
- will enter the phone number on the "Phone Number" screen.
-
- If you have purchased a metropolitan-area product (a flat rate local product)
- you will enter the 10 digit local access number. If you have purchased a
- nationwide access product you will enter that number. Enter your own area
- code, since Web America Networks is always a local call.
-
- If you will be roaming (traveling) out of your metropolitan area you will also
- be able to use the nationwide number to access the network remotely for a
- nominal roaming surcharge.
-
- The check box to "Bring up terminal window" should be blank since you will be
- using PC client software such as a browser or email client to access the
- network, not a text terminal. Your name and password are contained in the
- welcome letter that you received and may also have been provided to you by
- your customer service representative. Enter these in the spaces provided on
- the "User Name and Password" screen and click "next".
-
- When you log on to Web America Networks you will be assigned an Internet
- address. Choose this option on the "IP Address" screen and click "next to
- continue.
-
- You may get a "System Security Check" warning if you have turned on the
- optional "File and Print Sharing" capabilities of Windows95. You probably
- want to click "Yes" so that you will NOT share files or printers on your PC
- over the Internet.
-
- The Domain Name Server will enable you to type easy-to-remember names for
- your destinations on the Web (like www.wans.net). Without DNS you would
- have to type numbers like 208.205.34.1 for everything. This option should
- be set to "Server assigned name server address" . Click next.
-
- As we said, most customers will want to use the email program that is included
- with the software. To do this, click the box that says "Use Internet Mail" on
- the "Internet Mail" screen so that a check mark appears. Your email name is
- contained in your cover letter. The computer(s) that handle POP are called
- "pop.wans.net" and the computer(s) that handle SMTP are called smtp.wans.net.
- Click "next" to continue.
-
- You may or may not see two screens asking you to choose a profile in which to
- save your email settings. This will usually only occur if you are already using
- another email client. If you have already used an email program you may have
- an existing profile. If you do not see a profile in the box on the form, click
- on the "New" button. Even if you have an existing profile (as is illustrated
- here) you can create a new one for Internet mail.
-
- Your PC may ask you whether to overwrite the DNS, depending on whether you
- have installed Internet software before. Click "Yes". This will ensure that
- the settings you have entered during setup are not deleted. If you are using
- both dial-up and LAN for Internet access, you will want to discuss this with
- your LAN administrator first.
-
- You have now completed the basic configuration process. To finish the process,
- click "finish" and click on the highlighted "click here" text on the "Thank you"
- screen.
-
- Step 9 - Getting Online
-
- Most customers will be ready to start surfing the Internet. But, before doing
- this you may want to read the next section just to ensure that your computer
- system is completely set up with the Windows95 services that are needed to
- support your Internet software.
-
- You start up Explorer by:
- a). Double-clicking the "WANS" dialer icon to launch the smart dialer. The
- smart dialer will launch whatever program you desire once the connection
- is established (default is the default browser)
- b). Double-clicking the "WANS" icon (either on the desktop, if you have created
- a shortcut, or in the Dial-Up Networking folder)
- c). By double-clicking the "The Internet" icon on your desktop
-
- The "Connect To" dialog box displays the phone number for Web America Networks.
-
- Make sure that the dialing information is correct for your location. Some users
- on PBXs may require additional digits (i.e., a 9) to get external lines. If you
- are using the Smart dialer, you can set this via the "Options" button.
-
- Enter your user name and password in the "Connect To" dialog box. If desired,
- you can check "Save Password" to avoid having to enter your password each
- time you dial in.
-
-
- Dial-up Networking - Only if you do not have Dial-up Networking Installed Already
-
- Windows95 includes the communications features that your Internet software
- needs to run, but some users may still need to enable those features before
- the new software can talk to the modem and the Internet. This is probably
- the case if you have never installed any other dial-up networking software
- on your machine. The following few steps illustrate how to get Windows95
- to provide modem communications. Most of the settings listed here should
- already be set by default, but they are all included here so you will be
- aware of all your options.
-
- Open the Dial-Up Networking folder from the My Computer window (which you
- open by double clicking on the "my computer" icon on the desktop). If you
- do not see a Dial-Up Networking folder in My Computer, then it is not
- installed. See the "Installing Dial-Up Networking" Section for installation
- instructions.
-
- In the Dial-Up Networking window, right-click the WANS icon you created by
- running the Internet Connect Wizard in the previous section and choose
- "Properties".
-
- In the "Connect Using" area of the page, click the "Configure" button.
- Now choose the "Options" tab at the top and make sure the "Bring Up Terminal
- Window After Dialing" check box is NOT selected. Choose the OK button.
-
- Use the "Type of Dial-Up Server" list box at the top to select the type of
- connection as "PPP:Windows95, WindowsNT 3.5, Internet". In the Advanced
- Options group, select the "Log on to Network" and "Enable Software
- Compression" check boxes. This improves throughput of your connection.
- Make sure that Require Encrypted Password is NOT checked. The only
- protocol option selected should be TCP/IP. Click the "TCP/IP Settings"
- button to take you to the next page.
-
- Web America Networks will assign your IP address when you log on, so select
- "Server assigned IP address". The "Server assigned name server addresses"
- selection should be checked as well. Select the "Use IP Header Compression"
- check box. This improves throughput at low modem speeds. Select the "Use
- Default Gateway on Remote Network" check box. This ensures that all IP
- traffic is routed through Web America Networks. Click "OK", "OK", "OK"
-
- If your PC asks you later whether to overwrite the DNS, click "yes".
-
-
- TCP/IP Networking - Only if you do not have TCP/IP Networking Installed Already
-
- The TCP/IP networking code comes with Windows95, but you need to enable it
- before you can use your Internet software. To enable it, open your Control
- Panel (either double-click on the "My Computer" icon or choose it from the
- START button.
-
- Double-click on the "Network" icon to bring up the networking services screen.
- It is necessary to add a "Dial-up Adapter" and the TCP/IP Service. To the add
- Dial-up Adapter, choose "Add". From the screen choose "Adapter" and click on
- "Add".
-
- Choose "Microsoft" under "Manufacturers" by scrolling down to the M's. Under
- "Network Adapters" choose "Dial-up Adapter". Click "OK".
-
- You will come back to a screen that now has a Dial-up adapter on it.
-
- Adding TCP/IP is similar. Choose "Add". Select "Protocol" this time and click
- "Add". Choose "Microsoft" under "Manufacturers" by scrolling down to the M's.
- Under "Network Protocols" choose "TCP/IP". Click "OK".
-
- You will now have an entry for TCP/IP on your Dial-up Adapter. Click "OK" to
- accept this new configuration.
-
- In order for the new software to be completely installed you will now reboot
- your computer. Click "yes" on the "System Setting Change" screen.
-
- JUST THE FACTS
-
- For those of you who are already familiar with setting up a browser or email
- client, the addresses you need are as follows. You specific account information
- is contained in the welcome letter.
-
- The DNS address is server assigned, but in an emergency you can use 208.205.34.1
- The Web America Networks Home page is www.wans.net
- The mail server is smtp.wans.net (for SMTP)
- The mail server is pop.wans.net (for POP)
- The news server is news.wans.net
